Doughion Will Run Again -- i>y Stanley James Washington Correspondent ■ Washington Congressman I Robert L Houghton, the man who | has the most to say about whether I or not your taxes will rise, says! he is opposed to any more tax: increases “unless the emergency j prows worse." The North Carolina mountain-j leer, who heads the House Ways (and Means Committee, said in j an exclusive interview with this, paper’s correspondent: “I would j I lie willing to make some small re | vision in tax rates to iron out | some of the so-called ’loopholes.’ | But. the trouble is, when our bill went over to the Senate, the Sen ate Finance Committee might re write it and bring out a totally new bill revising everything. Houghton is firmly opposed to President Truman's proposal to wipe out the provision letting a husband and wife make a joint return on the husband’s income This enables a man making $20, 000 a year to report $10,000 and Ins wife, $10,000, and thus have I two returns in a lower bracket in I stead el one in a higher bracket. Doughton sponsored that provi 1 sion himself in a tax about four years ago; it is his* pride and 1 Joy. The veteran Congressman, i known far and wide as "banner Bob," has just decided to run again for a t wenty-M-eori-! term in Congress though he will be eighty-nine years old this fall. He came to Congress m 1010, when William Howard Taft was President Only one member has been belt longer: Representative Adolph Sabath of Chicago, who will be eighty six this year. He arrived in 1907. Houghton recently told his con stituents he really wanted to re tire and “spend my few remain ing years with my family and among my home people " But he gave m to the demand of many people, who said his experience placed upon lum a duty to make Ills services available “in view of the dangers, perils and perplexi i tic's with which w^ are faced" Sending Books To Foreign Nations The Kansas Commission <or i i Unesco raisod enough money in | 1950 to send 44,000 school books j to children overseas.
