Parrot Fever
Is Increasing!
—,*—
On May 39 the Public Health
Service in Washington anno inced
that more persons have been af
flicted with psittacosis, commonly
called parrot fever, this year than
in previous years. An official stat
er! that parakeets bootlegged into
this country in violation of re
gulations for quarantine may be
in responsible. A great many par
akeets have been brought in with
out passing quarantine regula
tions So far 1211 cases of parrot
fever have been reported in 1954
which is approximately the total
figure for all of 19511 Formerly
fatal, the disease is now supposed
to be curable. Human beings catch
it through infected birds. Besides
parrots and parakeets, turkeys,
pigeons and other kinds of birds
may be carriers.
Navy Blimp Sets
Endurance Test
new navy blimp endurance re
cord has beent set, with the crew
and aircraft remaining in the air
for 200 hours Without refueling, it
was announced on May 24, This is
of value in wartime for such an
airship to be able to stay up for
long periods of time without com
ing down to refuel. "The blimp
could wait for a submarine to
surface if it took all week,” Lt.
Albert Robertson, a Navy public
relations officer front Key West,
Florida, said, "and there are many
other times when continuous
flight without refueling could be
a great tactical advantage.” The
new record was set neat Miami
when the dirigible exceeded the
old record ol 170.3 hours set in
1047 by an M-type airship. The
aircraft had covered more than
3,000 miles and been under way -.t
all times on patrol over the Atlan
tic seaboard, the Caribbean, and
the Gulf of Mexico.
