Vandals and robbers have turned from plundering grave-yards to robbing churches. Several famous Vienna edifices have been entered recently, among them the historic Marihaif ' and Rochus churches and robes and altar vessels-of great value have been stolen. The police say that there are about 40,000 persons in Vienna who may be' classed as criminals. They re port 1,405 burglaries in the city in the last 90 days with 965 arrests and the recovery of loot to the val ue " of 60,000,000 crowns. Herman Creech FLORIST DECREASED PRODUCTION Perhaps no institution in the coun.J trytjs in better shape to secure sup pliesthan the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, and surely there is no. national institute in bet ter position to analyze our domestic conditions, since it reaches every where. - In the opinion of the com pany, "the average falling off of thi porduction throughout the countrj is estimated to be about 85 per cent, and htis in spite of greatly increased prices." In , its own principal pur- table of the percent of increase in costs from August 1914 to January 1920 shows that on more than ball of the "large number of articles the advance has been 100 per cent' and upwards t6 as much as 475 per cent. The' conspicuous feature of thistory which is used as an illustration" be cause it affects a concern in such general operation, apparently , re moves 'any doubt about there being any great backed-up demand for con struction work in practically' every line of industry.. "There is no reason of panic or in dustrial depression in the face of such a prospect," says an ecomomic ex pert. Added to this important ob servation is the addenda of needed houses,' railroad equipment and con struction work that has long been on j the waiting list. The needs of. other countries are also of great impor. tance, but foreign commerce is lagg ing, waiting for some signs of indus try try catching up with itself.. The world has not gotten back to normah production and everywhere it is the same old story concerning retarded development and the lack of construction to meet the imper. ative ' needs.' ' ' ' ' ' While the hours of lab r have been reduced the wages "have climed stead ily. It is pointed out that those who received early advantages with their pay checks lost the value of these in creases - as other advances followed. They now 'seek to recover the gains they have lost by further increases in wages. As - a result " wages are raised first in one quarter and then in another, each' successful demand suggesting others. In the past his tory of the country, increased expend. itures were a guarantee of increased norriuetion. One of tha reasons whv we do not get this today is the shorter hours. Was that the ouly reason, it might be overcome. Accepting the estimate of the Bell System that the decrease in production represents 35 per cent, the deficit cannot be squared up by charging it to the shorter day. v 7 ' r '.Evidently thr continues to exist countrya good deal of unrest through out the country, and to this unhealthy condition may be safely charged the responsibility of most of the 'loaf ing on the job" that has cut down production. -, ?'
