""TTTTf f I ! 1 ! f ttti HOW PRICES ROSE AND FELL Interesting conclusions may be drawn from a recently completed analysis of wholesale and retail prices and wages for the years 1860 to 1872 in which tendencies strik ingly like those of the present day are revealed, showing finally a slump t in prices which, economists and stu-1 dents of market conditions say, soon may be expected if history is to re peat itself. , j The figure of 100 is taken as the basic level of all three in 1860. There was a gradual rise during 1861 and 1862 and 4863, and at the end of the last year wholesale prices were at 150; retail prices at 140; and wages at 130. During the year 1864 came the sharpest rise and - - wuuicoaic pinco juuipcu bU bile mark, reaching the peak in January, 1865. Meanwhile both .retail prices and wages had taken a more grad ual rise, the former' standing at 165 in January and wages being at 150. v In April, 1865,; the war ended and there came a sudden drop in whole , sale prices, which fell to 160 in July '. of that year and then, rallied to 180 . by the end of the year. Retail prices and wages continued a steady rise throughout the year; not being af fected by the end of the war and reached the respective - levels" of .-170 and 165 at the end of 1865. v" In the year following the closa of the war, or 1806, there wcsSTmarkeJ variation in the trend cf the three. The people look anxiously for wis dom in the government, arid they realize how absolutely essential it is for the country to make a wise chdice at the coming election. Yet 1 with conditions in such a ferment, It is hard to tell what parties ' and candidates really stand for, or' to predict the exact results of the suc cess of any particular cause. In order to give its readers the best possible political service in these changing times, The Southerner is obtaining political correspondence regularly from a trained observer. It believes these articles throw much lii:( on the present mixed situation, and go far to clarify the shifting currents of these changing times. The voter who wants to know how to act to help protect his own inter est andj the welfare of the country will gain much light from our politi cal columns. ' ' a i? I? v n il. ! INDEPENDENT? Max Gardner speaking at Troy, N. 0., on - June 16th, refers to the much mooted question of Suffraire as follows: 1 - . .J. "Some tof the friends of my opponents are erroneously report ing me as being pledged to woman suffrage, in reply I would say that I stand on this question exactly as does Mr, Morrison, al though every thinking man and woman in the state knows that the question and that of who shall be the next democratic can didate for governor have nothing in common. I like my oppo nent, have been against woman suffrage and my only public uevmrauon on me suDject was wnen as a member of the, legisle- ture in 1914, I voted against the adoption in this state: Now, however, that the platform of the democratic party, on which I stand both nationally and locally, has declared in favor of wo man suffrage, I like Mr. Morrison, accept the dictates of -my party." . In spite of the fact that Mr. Gardner has voted against Suf frage and only stands on the Democratic State platform which ' has declared for Suffrage, soirie of his opponents in the Eastern Counties maliciously circulated reports that he was in favor of negro women voting and even went so far as to have, posters printed showing. Mr. Gardner's picture with two negro wenches one on either side and distributed them throughout their coun ties. Does this kind of politics appeal to you " A man who" has conducted a clean campaign, because he is a clean -man,' is viciously assailed by his opponents and maliciously slandered. On July 3, 1920, show your appreciation of a man of estab-, lished ability, unquestioned integrity and the courage to refuse -.pointblank to make any pledges or promises to any class of faction in the State.'
