Finder please return to The Southerner office and receive re ward. ; 29-5tp The Tarboro baseball aggregation afternoon went into first plade in the Eastern Carolina League race when they came out on the long end Of a 7-tc6 slugfest in which no less than 31 hits for a total .of 36 bases were garnered off the pitchers. One of the largest crowds of the season witness, ed the game and supporters of both clubs had an ample opportunity to cheer for their favorites as the game was one of those up and down af fairs in which the final score was In doubt until Tarboro went one ahead in the ninth and the visiting crew did not get another turn at bat. Bill Petway, of the 1920 Virginia baseball nine,, essayed to do the twirl ing for Scotland Neck-Hobgood and Llewellyn, Carolina's pitching star, was on the firing line for the home club until the beginning of the 8th, when Manager Shipley" sent First- Baseman Shirley, two twirls from the port side, to the mdund in an ef fort to stop the scoring. Both pitch ers were hit freely from the start with Llewellyn having a shade on Petway, but the local management's decision in changing pitchers worked yery effectively, stopping the scoring of the visiting team while the local aggregation continued to pound Pet. way for runs in each of the last four innings. Scotland Neck-Hobgood pushed a runner across in each of the second and fourth innings, but Tarboro came right back in their half of the fourth frame and tied the count when Casey Morris went to the platter following Shirley's single and drove the pill to deep right field and circled the bases before the borsehide could be recov ered. From this time until Casey's same bat drove a clean single to left field, scoring Horn, who was- given life on Kuyle's error of his grounder and had been advanced to second on Bird's single, it was a game full of thrills and nice plays and one that gave everyone, present their money's worth . Probably one of the most sensa tional plays of the game came in the first half of the ninth, when Bird, who was shifted from right field to first, leaped Into the air .and stabbed Petway's liner with runners On first and second, and two mere down. It probably sayed the game' for : the lo cals. Minton, first-baseman for the visitors, played like a big leaguer around the initial corner, accepting several hard chances without bobble1. .
