WHITAKERS BETTERMENT I Yesterday at the mayor's oifice, in Whitakers, the members of the Whit- akers Betterment met with Miss Ho well, of Nash county, and Miss Young of Edgecombe county, who gave a demonstration in the making of scup pernong grape juice. FARM AND HOME COUNCIL There was a very interesting quar terly joint meeting of the members pf the Farm and Home .Council this week in Miss Young's oflice to which goodly number attended. Mr. Zeno Moore made a talk and then the dis cussion was around the poultry prob lem and the way to raise winter eggs. It was determined that it was neces sary to save spring chickens, in order to get winter eggs. f . ( CONETOE COOKING CLASS. A picnic was held by the Conetoe Cooking Class at the Conetoe school house. The girls were quite interested, in the experiments in' grape juice mak ing, which was done' underlhe sup ervision of Miss Young, after which they had lunch and drank the grape juice and generally had good time. ' GIRLS FRIENDLY SOCIETY The Girls Friendly Society met last night at the home of Mrs. , Frank Hart Mrs. Johnson was elected field secretary; Hattie Carr, secretary, to succeed Evelyn Prince, who Is re turning to her home in Goldsboro. A After the business meeting, Mrs. Bonner, of Raleigh, spoke to the girls urging them to be faithful in every thing. . ' The society will meet with Mrs. Harvey Lewis. E. Weeks will entertain the members of the Christian Bible school, Friday evening, at her home, from the hours of 8 to 11. All con nected with the Bible school are most cordially invited to be present. , " Mrs. G. T. McNeely left today for Richmond to undergo treatment In one of the local hospitals. Sunday night the noted picture, "Last Days of Pompeii,". will be giv en, underthe auspices of the Calvary church. The picture will follow the regular religious service which also will be shown on the screen so that all may follow. TURKS ATTACKING CITY OF TARSUS Constantinople, Sept 10. The Turkish armies are besieging Tarsus, the birthplace of St. Paul, where there are twenty-five thousand inhab itants and a small French garrison, reputed to be short of food, accord ing to advices received here.
