BOX 90" NpT MAKING GOOD THEIR CLAIMS. from the very day that con gresa convened in Washington under the republican adminis tration it was claimed by thai party that they were going to save money for the people and have .an economical adminis tration. pnly a few days ago they were scattering to the four cor ners of the country propagan da making claim of economy. To fill up the pork barrel it takes money and appropria tions by the millions, but while the party wants to be economi cal it does not want to dispense with this pork barrel. Only yesterday there came thru press news from Washing ton that Mr. Mellon had stated that in order to meet the deficit of over three hundred and fifty million dollars, it would be ne cessary to levy additional taxes with which to meet this deficit. And this additional tax will be in . the shape of a high tariff law. STEEL TELLS STORY. While recent reports of com mercial agencies and of the federal reserve banks have been decidedly optimistic iri reflecting general improve ment in the business situation Wall street experienced its big gest thrill of the season w her Judge Elbert H. Gary, head ol the United States Steel Corpo ration, at the annual stockhol ders' meeting in New York, or last Monday, submitted his re port on the business activities of that concern. Students of the economic situation hav long recognized steel as a true barometer of American busi ness. Hence their forecasts a? to the future are largely gov erned by the showing of pros perous conditions this big cor poration is enabled to make. Its figures area deciding factor in indicating the state of the business pulse. At this meeting, Judge Gary said that the steel business has doubled in the last year and is 75 percent of normal, while the export trade Is nearing its pre-war high point and shows every sign of increasing in the nea'rlufure. He indicated in his Statement that the coal strike has caused little damage to the st'e'el industry thus far. All mill aVe well supplied with coal and coke, and, considering reserve fuel oil "hand, the industry's needs are well talcen care of, he said. With the steel business of the coVporation doubled in vol um'e 'as Compared with a year ago and now within 75 percent of its normal capacity, one can rWdily "appreciate the ttemeh dous strictes the country is now .rtakfri'g ; toward its normal peace-time 'activities in all lfn'es of industrial enterprise. It b'e'ans that tfoth public and pri-j vdte movements in the nation's upbuilding are getting ;Under way and are m6biizing their reserves of strength to set the wheels of industry humming. Low ered interest and discount rate bear out bank statements that there is a generous supply Of free money for investment pur poses. This money will be turn ed into productive channels, and unemployment will stead ily decrease until every willing worker will soon find a job awaiting him. It has been a long hard pull, but the worst has been gone 'hru with, and if ignorant poli ticians will let up on their med-i llesiome interference with the; latural laws of trade and lift! some of the burdens which still i estrict productive enterprise,! the country will soon be on the j highway of assured and per manent prosperity Richmond : i lmes-jjispatcn. j 4 HOG COMBINE.
