THE WZEELT MUMl Published Every Friday By HERBERT PEELE. Editor and Manager. SUBSCRIPTION RATES. One Year 1-00 Six Month 60c "mntAMit p dponnri class matter May 19, 1911, at the post office a Elizabeth City, North Carolina, under the Act of March 3, 1879." AS TO RETRACTION. By Herbert Peele. Aa my readers have doubtless already noted, from the front page of this Jseue. W. O. Saun ders, editor of the Independent, on last Friday served notice up on me demanding retraction ol and apology for my open letter . of last week to the Democratic voters of this county. A newspaper is not like a mag azine or a book. The editor's thoughts fly from his pen int type as fast as they are put on paper. It is not strange, men. that errors are sometimes made which have to be corrected. As often as it makes such er rors, the Advance is glad ot re tract and apologise for them, When tboy occur in the editorial column, or under the editor's name. T am personally responsible for them and am always glad to make personal 'apology for them The article to which Saunders refers began to take sliane in my mind last Wednesday. TCefore T liegan in put il on paper, however, piv attention was nflrncled by tlie story of Ibe strange disap pearance of Oliver Lavden from TSelvidcre. :ind Inning hcen imrt blc In get satisfactory details Ibe matter T took a special trr to TTertford last Tlmrsdav and drove nnf- to Helviliere. where I interviewed young Layden's broth er as to the matter. Returning borne on the four o'clock train Thursday afternoon after a rath er strennoiis drive. T bad first to !i. JT. ijr m wriiF inr mews sioty ;iuu in the "open bt1er." 1 found the printer when I got to the office with hook about clean and be took the "ropy"' about as fast as it came from my typewriter. I would not strange if. in such n article, 1 had made some min er errors, Ijot us see. My first charge against Saun ders is that he fears' not God neither regarts man. . The first part is true by Sanaders'o own confession, and I hold th.at where there is no fear for Clod there is no regard for. .num. .Resides, hi his Down Homer, I found langh his Down Homer I found him laughing the people of this sec tion to scorn because some them had not discovered him 1o be an infidel. When I see him on the eve of this campaign honey foglng with this same element. 1 take it as excellent evidence that he cares as much for men as he can get out of them. My second charge against W. -r uwuv-a.K ST X irx.. Tl til 111- a demagogue. I stated that as a personal opinion, giving reasons for my belief. I have, nothing further to say on this point. My third charge against W. O Saunders is that he ig always ac cnsing others of fighting unfair I.v; when he is really guilty him self of the very thing that he charges against others. Recause I spoke in generalities, some of which he considered applicable to himself, he declared that I was shooting him in the back. At the same time, in his paper, he was insinuating charges that he knew were not true; and when taxed with them, denying that he had ever made them. My fourth charge against Maunders is that his nttacks are mad npon those against whom he hold nerhonaljsDite or grudge. As he has himself stated that bis naper lets those alone who left it alone, T do not see why I have anything to retract on this eount. I hold my next charge: i. e.. that Saunders is always posing as a martyr or a hero as made sufficiently evident in last week's paper. I have nothing to retract on that score. T am opposed to W. O. Saun ders. I have stated, because he does not know how to tell the truth. Perhaps In this rase some littlie revision of my statement may be neeessarr. I is evident hat T am not able to Fpeak with authority as to whether Saunders is able to tell the truth or not There are, dormant possibilities in every man, we are told, of which others little (''ream. Wh.it 1 should have said, then, is that W. O. Saunders does not seem to me to know how to tell the truth I am bound to declare that I ha seen nim display exceedingly small evidence of ability in that line. Saunders also takes especial exception to my statement that no man wants to attack a skunk in his den, or handle a buzzard bare-handed, or grapple with a devil-fish. If he wants to do any of these things I have no objec tion ; but T believe that most peo ple will agree with me that eith er one or the three is a nasty That I haev published anythP- falselv of W. O. Saunders I do not believe. And I do not believe that he will wish to attempt to show in court that I have done so. If he does press the matter, I shall go no further m retraction or apology than I have already done. Tf I have been unwise I have not been dishonest; if I have technically violated the law, I shall yet feel that T hae told the truth'. Perhaps, after all, I am wro about owing nobody furher apol ogy. The skunk, the buzzard. n the devil-fish are all as the Lfm' made them; and so are not re- sponsible for their rf pn1si ve.teK . Rut T believe .saunders cla.m to be self-made. T was quite sure ill along that the Lord was not responsible for the iob.
