Miss Bell was formerly a teacher in the city graded school but gave up teaching on account of ill health. The facts in this case seem t be about as follows. While II. W. Turner W88 for apr for in uaieagii as attorney James Wilcox in his recent plication to the Covcrnor lmlon he was summoned to appear before the investigation committee then in session in Raleigh anyl questioned as to the Judge's conduct of the in vestigation of the Pasquotank County chain gung and its re sults Mr Turner was vigorous in his condemnation of both. In his opinion, according to the report appearing in tne ews ami Observer, the investigation did little or no good and much harm; and he recounted before the committee the story ofjtowl following the session of superior court there was mutiny and in sulordination in the chain gang for a considerable time. I. M. .Meekins of this city, noting the report- of Turner's evidence at Raleigh, hastened with W. '. Cohoon ami Win. All of these witnesses slated that in their opinion the inves ligation had Ix-en warranted and thai it had been productive of good results. Mr. Meek ins went .n to make the almost unbelievable charge that Re corder Turner had told him that if he would defend tin- two guards on trial in his (Tur ner's) court, he (Turner) would agree in advance to turn them loose. Later Meekins offered the statement that J. B. I-eigh of thi city would corroborate him in his charge, against Turner. On Monday at Raleigh other Elizabeth City testimony was heard by the committee. Sheriff Reid testified that the general effect of the investigation here was bad and that the people of county condemned Judge Car ter mainly and especially for the manner in which he acted after the examination of the prisoners, threatening the guards in the pre-sence of the convicts and condemning the chairman of the board of county commissioners without waiting to hear the explanation he was trying to make. W. M. TTinton disagreed with the nheriff about the result of the Investieation. He de clared Judge Carter's character ization of the chain gang as a man made hell was eminently Inst. Mrs. Wilson was seventy live years of ae and had been a faithful ami efficient member of Union Methodist church for iiMiiy years. W. (. Saunders corroborated Leigh's testimony. Juldge Carter lias been repre sented in this investigation by Manning and Kitchln and by Col. P. M. Bejirsall. E. ?. ! Mr. E. V. Nash of Camden died Friday night at his home after a brief but severe attack of pneumonia,. Mr. Nash was sixty-seven years old and was one of the I test known of Camden's citi zens. He was at one time a resident of Elizabeth City and w,;is known throughout this section. He is survived by a umber of children. Mrs. Nash died about a year igo. . Q. ELLIOTT DEAD Mr. A. (J. Klliott died Sat urday iiiht at seven o'clock al his home on Broad Street after a week's illness of pneu monia . Mr. 1011i.it t. was about sixty years olvi and came to Elizabeth City about twelve years ago. He is survive! by his wife am' eight children -six sons, Quin toii. II. J.. K. II., R. W A. (J. Jr.. and F. R. Elliott, and two daughters, Mis. John A. McKiiumey of Norfolk, and Miss Martha Elliott of this city. Before coming here Mr. Elliott was Sheriff of Chowan County. The boys all acquitted them selves with credit. The Rey-j noldson team won l.th debates and w'M go to Chapel Hill for the slate contest on April 9th. The entire county is interested In the county commencement which takes place next Wednes day. An interesting program has been arranged in which al1 children in the county will take part. The morning will be devoted to contests in recitation and declamation and the after noon to athletics. At night an 'Old Fiddlers' Convention' will be held. E TEAM Honors to Elizabeth City Here But Defeat Results at Washington The Elizabeth City afflruia. the debaters. Miss Naunh? Feiring and Mr. Henry White, last Friday night defeated New bern's negative team at the GETS 1CI1II High Bchool building here. The negative team from this city; which went to Washington to ,dehate at the same time wa deCeatcd, and Newberu won against Washington in the de bate at Newbern, which makes a tie in the triangle. The debaters here Friday night, while all using their man uscript to a greater or less degreet, had their subject well in hand and were at ease 0D the floor. The judges were Messrs L. S. Blades, J. B. Leigh, and Walter Small.
