EAT SHELLFISH
HEXF FRIDAY
Day 3o be Celebrated
Through Nation, Show
ing Value of Aquacul

- The National Association of Fish
. aries Commissioners, through its
president, M. L. Alexander ol
;.-Louisiana, has declared that Friday,
'. November lath, should be eelebra
fted from Maine to California and
from Washington to Florida as
-Shelfiah Day" and ask that on
;evry table in the land either lob
sters, oysters, clams crabs or
'hrimp be the -iain dish.
While the Coastal states ot the
v Union are more for'unate in having
the different species of sea iood
right at hand, neve-theless, modern
' methods of preserving and pack
ing shell fish enable the people of
the interior of the country to joifi
in 'Shelfish Day' movement by par
taking of their tavorite shellfish on
this day as well as those living in
the Seaboard states.
The growing scarcity and advanc
ing prices of animal tcood has call
ed particular attention to the var
ious sea foods of the country, both
fin and shell, as never before and,
together with the question of con
servation and development of our
natural resources, the problem of
increasing the output of the coastal
waters by advanced methods of
Aquaculture has ceen studied not
alone by the Government experts
tut by the different state commlfe
aionei whose members compose
the National Association of Fisher
ies Commissoners.
vVlth the high cost of living, the
scarcity of beef cattle and the in
creasing population to be combated
It Is suggested thpt many or our
natural resources are capable of a
development which will supply a
cheap yet wholesome ;tood. A
mong these resources the fish and
hell fish industries have yet to
reach their maximum production as
there is not a state on the Atlantic
or Pacific seaboard or Gulf coast
whose resources have been extend
ed to the limit nor Is it even pos

This is a Question of no
Small Interest and Some
Conjecture Here
Much Interest was created la Hli-
zabeth City by tne announcement.
which appeared under a Klnston
date line in the daily papers ol
last Wednesday, that Judge Harry
Whedbee of Greenville is being
spoken of as a probable candidate
for Congress from this district to
oppose Hon. John H. Small, who
will no doubt offer himself tor re
election next year. i
That Judge Whedbee is being
much spoken oi in this connection
through the district was no surprise
in political circles in Elizabeth
City, for his 'name has been heard
here more than once as a possible
opponent of Congressman Small In
the next election. But the fa:t
that the 'talk' had got into print
led many to thing that perhaps the
way was being prepared for a defi
nite announcement as to his atti
tude from Judge Whedbeo himself.
As yet. however, no such announce
ment has been forthcoming.
There is no judge on the bench
more popular in this section than
Harry W. Whedoee, who is well
liked both by the bar and by the
people. If he enters the race the
contest for the Democratic congress
ional nomination in this district
will be far from uninteresting.

On Saturday night, In response to
an invitation from the Church the
balcony was filled with representa

welcomed by the pastor, and sang

Beginning of Annual Ob

Day" in Elizabeth City
Schools
The Primary, Orammer and High
School of the city joined Friday In
a very interesting celebration of Ar
bor Day.
Assembled in the school auditor
ium, songs, recitations And speeches
were heard from members of each of
he three departments. At the
close of this program Wesley Wool
ley, president ot the Senior Class,
presented the tree to the lower
classes, enjoining upon them the
need of protecting it through the
years.
When these exercises were com
pleted the school marched out upon
the campus where, through the cour
tesy of the City Manager, a beauti
ful willow oak had oeen partially
planted. The students lormea an
aisle through which delegates from
each of the classes led i procession
followed by the Senior Class. Superin
tendent Spraglns, and the principals
of t)e three schools. At the tree
the Senior class completeu Its plant
ing and Wesley Woodley read a for
mal will to the delegates from the
classes, in which the tree was be
queathed by the Senior Class into
their care.
This concluded a very enjoyable
program, which was the beginning of
the celebration of Arbor Day In the
Elizabeth City Schools The cus
tom will bo maintained through each
following year, at first, trees being
idanted on the campus, and, later,
when this Is no longer necessary, In

The Elizabeth City basket'

by a Bcore of 25 to 1.
The game, the first of the aeaaora
in Elizabeth City,, was staged Ofk
the Y. M. C. A. building floor,
and as the score Indicates was
one sided affair from start to finilk.
However, in the second half UliM
heth City held the visitors down to
six points by no means a bad de
fensive and if the EllzaDeth CltJT
forwards had been able to make
most of their opportunities at the
goal from the field and from the
foul line each side would hart
scored about the same number of
runs in this half.
The Elizabeth City aggregatloa

The effective guard work of M1M
Dannie Owens for Elizabeth

that contributed to the fact thai
the visitors won only two field
goals In the second half, though
he whole team was more agresslfe
than in the beginning. Home

the fact that the vislors by thiJ
