Benjamin Franklin. We wish you a Merry Christmas. Thia is the last issue of The Ad vance before Chilstmas. The next issue of this paper will not appear until December 31st. To our advertisers, one and all, we extend our sincere appreciation fof the best Christmas business in Vtjie paper's history. Because of it we look toward the brightening future with renewed courage and wjth leaping heart. For three weeks now Tuesday's Issue of The Advance has been an eight page instead; of a two page peter. It is our earnest desire to give our subscribers eight pages very issue; but to do so is Im possible unless we have sufficient advertising to justify the extra ex penditure,, .We can get the ad vertising if our readers will let Elizabeth City merchants know that they take and read The Advance. We are printing again this week Professor Branson's address, deliv ered here on Community Service Day. We leel that for this re petition there is no nee-1 of apol ogy, for there would be nothing amiss in putting this address be fore the readers cf this paper every week. Indeed it is our purpose to preach in these columns on texts found In it for the next twelve months. Readers Of The Advance will do well to preserve this copy of the speech, for we think we have it very nearly correct this time. The complete elimination of typographical errors from newspaper columns is some thing hardly to be attained, but we have spared no pains in our effort LADIES COLLAR SALE Entire stock being Sacri ficed. Printed without fuss and feath ers this is the Christmas number of The Advance. That it would De a paper of such proportions was a surprise to us no less than, doubt less, It is to our readers. But that a sixteen page paper should have been printed and issued from the Advance office within two days shows the possibilities of the pa per's mechanical equipment. As a matter of fact, this shop is pre pared to give Elizabeth City just as much paper as Elizabeth City is willing to support. Those who want a better paper have onlv to support the one they've got in order to get the one they want. Bu,. th.s paper cannot live, not to speak of growing, on mere wishes fhat Elizabeth City had a daily pa per. NEITHER SILVER NOR GOLD It Is our purpose this week to put a copy of The Advance in every home In Elizabeth C:ty. We should like to send It regularly in to every one of these homes in which it is not already a, twice a week visitor. Nothing which Is at all worth while could be much easier than to subscribe to The Advance. The paper is delivered at the subscriber's own door Tues day evening and Friday morning. He may pay for it by the month, 10 cents at a time, or by the year, for which period the subscription price is one dollar, as best suits his convenience. The paper Is stop ped promptly upon his request, and one who takes The Advance may rest assured that the paper will not be sent to him until he gets many months in arrears except at his own explicit request. The Advance is now about to make a strong and systematic ef fort to increase its city circulation. It will cost us little more to deliver a thousand papers in Elizabeth City than it costs us to deliver a little over half that number. We want between four and five hun MgGAB dred new subscribers by the.- first, of the year,; ' v Frankly we . want, by the time the Mid-Winter Bale begin to come on, to be able - .to show the merchants that If their advertisement is in The Advance t will not be necessary for them "bin the town" In order to reach the people of Ellxabeth City. We wonder bow much you are willing to help us in this direction. It will be to your advantage hardly less than to our own to have a me dium in Elizabeth City through which the great body of the peo ple of the town can be reached and reached promptly. You have, no doubt, from time to time, contri buted to other objects for the good of the town. Why not do this one? You have put money into a church or a school, or a hospital. Why not Into a newspaper? It is an agency no less useful and no less necessary. The Advance is not always as good as It would like to be. It counts itself not yet to have ap prehended. But it prints more home news than any other paper, and It prints a very great deal of It first. The Advance may be hampered by lack of equipment and lackof money; but it has limit less energy and indomitable ambi tion, and when there is a big story in the air The Advance has been known to gets its news by wire and tc put it on the streets of the city well in advance of the daily papers. Above all, The Advance is a clean newspaper one which It will not be necessary to censor at the door steps lest it contain matter too scan dalous for the eyes of the immature members of the household. You can tell your neighbor that you take The Advance without apolog izing for it. The Advance is coming to your home now in the midst of the Christmas season, with an appeal for support. We are not asking for your money, for the trifling amount which you are asked to subscribe in order to make the pa per a regular visitor to your home would not pay a fifth part of what It costs us to print your paper and deliver it to you so much as we are asking your interest In a home enterprise. Wlli you pledge us that Interest by some substantial token? The Advance will come tn von I for a dollar a year. It will Come to you just as regularly and promptly for ten cents a month. It can be sent to ten of your neighbors one month for a dollar. Will you call The Advance office to-day, by telephone, and have your name or some one else's added to our list? The article by Superintendent Spraglns In this Issue is printed at the request of members of the board of school trustees. The facts set forth are worthy of the careful thought of every one o' the schools patrons.
