(."., July 18 The com inEf Uncle Joe Cannon and some other Republican spellbinders to North Carolina during the approarh ing campaign is tilisting tome in ter st and Mseusiion. The Republi cans are anxious to capture the next Congress, and it is understood that they have designs on several North Carolina districts the third, eighth and tenth, and probably the seventh and n;nth being the fields which they fntend to cultivate. Talking ab--ut thp tenth district with Commiss'oner of Labor and Piii'MfT? Shfpnian, whose home is in that district, and who is especial ly well qualified to speak on 'he FUbjpft, I am told that the pros pects of Repub'icpns thera are not very" encouraging this year; that, on the contrary, "the Democrats are sure to red?em that district in November." The nomination of Mr Weaver has ?iven entire satisfac tion, and tiere are no 'disgruntled" Democrats In the tenth this year. Lack Of harmony and consequent disorganization among" the Deroo rra two years ago made the elec tion of Britt (Republican) possible. "The district Is normally Democra tic." Mr. Shipman added: "Weav er Is a strong candidate and, be sides, the Republicans never carry the district twice In succession." Commissioner Shipman) spent a week In the tenth district recently, and he knows what he re talking a bou". tor he fs one of therlearest thinkers and hardest party workers in the State. "We are united to a man this year with all of us enthu Mas'lcally for Wearer, and we are Just as certain to put Congressman Britt out of business in November as any future contingency can be." Mr. Shipman left Raleigh Saturday for Buffalo, New York, to attend the annual conven'ion of the National Association' of Governmental Labor Officials of tie United States and Canada, which is in session there this week. KEEP THE RUBBER TRUE The announ-ed purpose of the Re publicans should, however, place the Democrats in all the couaties on their guard. Republican 'activity for congressional candidates will, of course, have Its effect on the candi dates for S'ate and county offices and for the legislature, and our forks should rot run the risk of al lowing th. interests of any nominee to suffer by default lack of effort because of fancied security is one of the most dangerous skoals that threaten navigation along tlifc poli tical saroast. "Keep thp rubber true." FAKM WOMEN'S CONVENTION The p'Oiram for the Farm Wo men's Convention, whi li meets In Raleigh, at tlie A. & M. College, An giiHt 2!i-31. h-s been prepared. It shows that, prominr-nt experts will deliver adlreses on that occasion, including Mrs. Kate Brew Vaugbnn noted lecturer and demonstrator on home economies. SHAPE The health of the 'Tarheel soldiers at Camp Glenn seems to have been carefully looktd after, accord ni to Dr. W. S. ltankij. Secretary ot the S ats Bord of Hjalt i, who has re turn 'd to Raleigh after complet ing a sanitary survev of the camp, during wbicli he impelled th? water supply, h; nJTtiig of food, kit ben fa cilities and conditions, and methods o! fflsp-sltion of waste and sewer age arran ;ements. Dr. Rankin, who wi'l prepare a formal report on the stufleet, states Hiat the feinitary con ditions at Cafp Glenn are so good that many towns could advantage ously pattern alter the "military City." While some cf the boys are rep resented as chafing under the re straint of mo'dlkatlon camp life and are "anxious lof He fray" at least to the point of proceeding to the Mexican border the 'old folks at home" and most of their friends hope that they will never be called uron for actual service in Mexico, from which so many of them would be apt to succumb to the disease pecu'iar to that climate If they escaped Mexican bullets and "the knife under the fifth rib."
