Circulates in six counlbs "Entered us second-class matter, May 19, 1911, at the "Post Office at Elizabeth City, North Cutnlinu, un der the act ol Mi-rch Hid. 1873." SOME SWEET DAY The Southern Commercial Con gress, as lias been already observed In the news and editorial columns of this paper, will be in session in Norfolk lrom December 11 to De cember 14th. Elizabeth City, the metropolis of Northeastern North Carolina, and the nearest North Carolina city (0 this Congress Is more than com monly Interested in It and would naturally expect to Bend delegates thereto. . However, the Governor of the State, wltn whom seems to rest the matter of appointment of delegates to this convention, has apparently Ignored the one town In the State that at this time would Ba,m mo3t entitled t0 recognition. His list or appointees has been published and not a single Elizabeth City man Is to be found in the list. Inasmuch as Elizabeth City Is so near Norfolk and lnce delegates from Elizabeth City could so con veniently attend this CongresB, one might gather that tht? Governor's opinion of the people of the town 1r such that he feels that other Cities of th(. state have letter and more capable men to fend to such a Congress than Elizabeth City. The Advne suspects, however, that Govt riior Craig, like the peoplfi Of other sections of the state net; eraliy, is jifcne to . o'-.ntT'ilness of the fact (hat Nort, Carolina has : northeas'ern corner Inhabited by a progressive and intelligent people who are as trulv North Carolinians as are to bp round anywhere. We hope, however, that one of these days will come to the Governor's chair a man who appreciates the fact that the six counties to the north of .Al'iemarlp Sound belong to the Old North State instead of Vir glnla and are entitled to recogni tion as' such. The editor of 1thi paper pent the Pibical Recorder previous to the Convention, a wri'e-up of Elizabeth Ci'y whleh ot'r tnod friend. Editor Might C. Moore, was scod rnouuh to pive pp'ce on tbe front p:e. Al most as soon as the Recorder reach ed us came a letter from a subscri ber thereof wanting to know the price of land In the environs of Elizabeth City. If mere words could so move a stranger to our section, we can't help wondering how many Baptists will be In Elizabeth City six months from now after the automobile ride over the town and Its suburbs Riven the "-delegates this af ternoon has had time t0 get In Its good work. The Advance ha been telling It lo these many years ours Is a pro gressive section. Evidence of It will strike the sense of all the State In time. Obsrve. for Instancy, how the counties hereabout are abolish ing the useless office of a county treasurer. The Savings Rank " and Trmt Company Is now tho deposi tary for the public funds of Pasquo tank county, and . hnndles these funds for the county without charge. Camden county hap entrusted the keeping of Its funds to the Citizens Bank of Elizabeth City, and none can doubt that they are safer and more . conveniently appropriated than under the out-of-date system of having to take a county order to the county treasurer before you can get it cashed. We have observed a strong sentiment in other counties in this section for the abolition of the treasurer office, and no doubt very shortly other counties will be fol'owlng the Iea(l of Pasquotank and Camden In this matter. TJuder the amemded constltntlon we take It. the folks can abolish this office without troubling the legislature a bout It. There's just no lisp talking, this section is mnkin;;. progress all the time. A photoaph taken only a few years Pgo in this county shows a rural mall delivery wa-,on on the pubMo rord and hub dep in. mud.
