LOOKS LIKE BRYAN AND TAFT.
• Prophecy is not essentially a part of
t newspaper's duties to its patrons, but
given certain facts upon which to base
a calculation it is within the province
of the editor to say what reasonable
conclusion may be drawn. It is even
so as to the standard bearers for the
two great parties in the presidential
election to be held this year. It is
freely conceded J. Bryan will
again lead the Democrats and from the
lights before us it appears to be equally
certain that Secretary William H. Taft
will be the Republican nominee. The
latter is unquestionably the choice of
President Roosevelt and represents
\
more nearly than any other candidate
In the Republcan party the progressive
or so-called radical wing of thac party,
as does Mr. Bryan the progressive or
so-called radical wing of the Demo
cratic party. This element is over
whelmingly in the majority in both
parties, and while the Rapublicans are
prone.to be governed by political ex
pediency more so than the Democrats,
President Roosevelt will dictate the
selection of his successor, and it will be
one in sympathy with his policies.
Taft is that man.
With th*i exception of temperamental
and traditional differences between the
two parties, which are great and irre
concilable, the most marked issue, as it
appears to us now, will be the tariff,
and .upon that issue principally will the
c&ZLpsi£3be fought The Republican
national platform will be written under
pressure from a large number of revis
ionists in the party and the concession
■will in itself inure to the advantage of
the Democrats, being, *ts it will be, an
admission of- Dcm-
the protective s tariff is class
legislation, is just. Aside from Che
taajff, R and Democratic
speeches will sound nearer alike this
year than for many years, because so
much of the Democratic doctrine of
equal rights to all and special privileges
to none will be placed in the platform
at Mr. Roosevelt's instance. The sin
cerity of the two parties in declaring
for reform will be measured largely by
the public by the record of each in the
past. In this Democrats have decidedly
an advantage by reason of the fact
that they have, in season and out ol
season, consistently fought for these
.reforms, while on the other hand the
failure of the Republicans to correct
the great abuses, having absolute and
unbroken power for years, will weigh
heavily against them.
The Republican platform declaring
for revision of the tariff and for Roose
velt's policies will be written only after
a struggle which will the party as
nothing ever has before. On the other
hand the vexing money question, which
caused the split in the Democratic
party in 1896, has been eliminated en
tirely from politics and the party is
more solidly united than it has been
for years.
There is no reason why any Democrat
should view with anything but cheer
fulness prospects for success in the
coming election, this year.
Senator Simmons has introduced a
bill for a SIOO,OOO public building for
Bocky Mount. By virtue of its import
ance as a city, its postoffice receipts
and for many other reasons, Rocky
Mount is entitled to this appropriation,
but the committee who will pass upon
the measure may not know it, so it is up
to us to enlighten them. 4ie t's all get
to work to show by facts that this is
the biggest town of its size in the State
. and the most deserving of a federal
building.

The puzzling part of the whole busi

to make such a big mistake?
