Friday, May 27, 1938 THE DARE COUNTY TIMES Page Sevea Ed Wilse Mann Writes Of His Teaching Days In The Coast Conntry Beloved Teiacher Who Served for 20 Years, Now Employied at the Great Elks National Home at Bedford, Virginia, Writes us of Yesterday and To^y Hundreds of people in Dare County remember with delight Ed. Wilse Mann, beloved teacher and native of Manns Harbor who has boon away from the county for some 20 years. His memory was stirred recently by a picture in the Dare County Times of a group of teachers of a quarter century ago who worked in Dare. So he takes occasion to >vrite us from his new job, and to tell us of the long ago days, and his present location. He says; As a rule I get The Dare County Times Sunday mornings, and al ways enjoy reading the home news. Although I’ve been away near 30 jrears, yet I claim Dare County as my dear old home, and try my best to keep in close touch with the people, and all the news. After dinner and as the sun had gone behind the western hills, I came on over to my quarters and settled down in my nice cozy room to rest from the many cares of the day, to read and write. As I opened the paper the first thing I saw was the picture of a little group of the few and faithful Dare County Teachers of a quarter century ago, and I am glad to be 'in that number, for I think teach ing and training tha young is one of the noblest and highest call ings. As the boys and girls of today are men and women of tomorrow, and as they gather around us i the school room who can foretell the outcome or possibilities in each of them. No one knows for God in His goodness only re\'eals a step at a time. No one knows today whal tomorrow will bring forth, yet we pll know time is fleeting and that they will all so koon be in line for promotion to leadership. And we, as teachers, should rea lize the harvest truly is great and pray for guidance to help train them and start them out in the right direction. I am a true believer to be guided by your conscience in all things We do, and practice what we teach. I could never mark any of my pu pils tardy, if I as .their leader were ever late. And then my motto was “on time,” and to stress that motto. Neither could I speak to them about the evils of smoking and drinking, if they could ever smell such on my breath. Then we as leaders have to live the life of a leader and guide. Then surely we can never betray the trust played in our care. It is indeed a grand work, and I love and am interested in it. I thoroughly enjoyed the picture and readily recognized each one’s face and ^ey brought pleasant and happy memories of the long ago. At that time I was rather thin and frail, weighed 118 pounds, Hien younger and trying to look older as a leader and guide. Now older and trying to look younger as nature takes away. Yet 1 do realize that I’ve aged consider ably, but I do really feel younger and now weigh 155 pounds. 1 taught 21 years in succession, and during that tife taught three summer schools, making those three years twelve months to the year. During the 21 years teaching I attended 12 summer schools and and one of those 12 summers at tended 6 weeks at the University of N. C. and one week after I got back home attended a two week teachers Institute and never miss ed a roll call in either. I have taught in three states. One year in Charleston County S. C., three years in Princess Anne Qjunty Va., and 17 years in dear old North Carolina. I now hold an Elementary Life CsrtiDcate of North Carolina, and a First grade of S. C. in the year 1913 and 1914, and first grtde of Va. at the time 1 taught there. At summer schools I took trai- training, and taught as follows: Ten years primary teaching, Hve years a one teacher school with all seven grades. ' ’Two years Principal of two teacher school and had 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th gxades. Four years principal of a three teacher school and had only the 6th and 7th grades, and enjoyed all my work. I gave up_ teaching for govern ment work. I worked at the U. S. Marine Hospital six years, had charge of the Linen Department; had a nice place there and enjoyed my work there. But the depression got me, as the personnel had to be cut and that took some from e\ery Depart ment. 32 lost their jobs at one time. Now for the past three years I htve been here in the Blue Itidge Mountain section, a very beautiful country, as housekeeper at the Elks National Home, Bedford,^ Va.. and Bedford is a very wealthy and beautiful little town; population four thousand. Bedford is known as the "no tax” totvn, and that is correct. This home is just as nice and beautiful as money can build, there are nine cottages here ,with 426 bed rooms. Every room has running water both hot and cold, a nice large clothes closet and furnished as well as the finest hotels, not only furnished nice but nicely kbpt; cleaned thoroughly and clean linen everyday. Eveiy building is strict ly fire proof, all modern convenien ces. Have a well furnished hospital 35 bed capacity, operating rem, dressing room, Xray and all modem machinery—one doctor—one chief nurse, two men nurses and four orderlies. A well equipped laundry, bake shop, a two chair barber shop, dairy and herd of forty-two cows, and we raise our own meat. The barn is a large and beauti ful building with all modem con- viences and during the trustees meeting every May we have a big- barn dance. Two mails in this home every day, Sundays and all holidays the same. Every amusement wishel for; golf course, pool rooms, card rooms, libray, sunparlors, lodge rooms reception halls, music lobby, flower gardens, fish ponds ,swim- fing pool, awnings and chairs all out on lawn. In the main lobby most all as semble there at noon to get the news flashes over the loud speaker, and look on the bulleton board and we all call that place Broad way. Think of three or four hun dred people in one home- as one family all the time the same old faces and I sear all their com plaints and troubles. I am on duty all the time, never a day off, every Saturday, Sunday and holiday just the same. It's the year around job, one week a year vacation. I have eighteen servants to do the work, sixteen maids and two men servants; 426 bed rooms and during my spring and* fail house cleaning I have to hire extra help. Washing windows and cleaning cur tains, Over a thousand window.? to wash and curtains. I mads new curtains year before last and it took some over 24 hundred yard.= of material. Last year I J^.wed Up over 750 yards of table linen into table clo^s. I have two large store rooms for my supplies. When one gets a new mattress they all want one, and the same about everything, ail are old men. As this is a National Home every state in the union is Tcjiit- sented here, ail classes, all old cripples of all kinds, blind, aged and feeble minded. Some can’t find their way to their rooms, some sad sights to see. They die out very fast at times, yet the Ones that are sent here are very frail when they reach here. This is a Charity Institution, a home for the aged and infirm, and when you have all that crowd down behind you, and eighteen servants to keep working you have plenty to keep you going. I love my nice room, work, and the mountains are beautiful, yet the dear old sea shore and level country is by far more attractive to me. Now dear friends I -was so glad to see the picture of the teachers of a quarter a_ century ago, _ it brought such "pleasant memories and appreciated so much in the editor that I felt I should let him Wiow it in this way, trusting the ones that read this will let the editor hear from them. In thinking of my school ex perience it brings pleasant mem ories and I very often wish to be back in the great work. So dear teachers never grow weary in well doing, with'.my beat wiibes to all.
