Of this sum, the town spends only $22,- 000 for water system, and $15,000 for sewer system. The town has been faced with a and sud- serious problem as to water I sewage facilities, since its den growth as a tourist center has brought thousands here each sum mer, during the period of year when fresli water and sanitary facilities are most important. The federal allotment of $100,200 approved by President Roosevelt is to be matched by the Town of Man- jteo in the ai.iount of $37,000. The project proposal provides for the installation of 13,500 feet of sower jmains, 17,500 feet of water mains, , 300 water and sewer connections, a 175,000 gallon steel elevated lank, a 200,000 gallon concrete storage tank, 27 fire hydrants, pumo house, pumps, and a sewage pumning sta tion with pump house, pumps and comminutors (to pulverize all waste material) Water would be supplied from IG group wells to be located at a point free from outside pollution. The urgent need for the system was revealed in a spot-man sur- |Vey made in 193!) by Charles V. Morgan, sanitary officer with the local office of the district health department. Mr. Morgan’s survey revealed 200 prospective' users of the municipal water and sewage •system. Of these 20fi prospective .limits or near enough to use the users, ail within the corporate I system, these methods of sewage disposal are now used: Kaw sewage iines to the creek 42, outdoor privies 8G, inadequate met al septic tanks 3S, and septic tanks approved but witli the secondary treatment of nitrification in itself jforming a menace to health 40. When 1 received a wire to go; there and help get the new paper, established I wa.sn’t any too well, pleased. “Just another tank ■ town,’’ I said to myself. But how I quickly I changed my mind! Never,! in all my life have I met such lovely and gracious people; who welcomed me so warmly into their midst that I felt that I had been away on a long joui'ney and had arrived home at last. Southern hospitality has often been written of and sung of, but expressing it is an art. The people of Columbia seem to be banded together with one common thought, “I love my fellow man.” This place has intrigued me, I want to find out how .so many GOOD people came to live all in one spot. I want to pry into their private lives, to affiliate myself with their cliurches, to romp with tlieir children .... Surel.v, some where there can be found the clue to their gracious mode of living. Mingling with the ci"wds on Satunla.N night, going '■> the inuvie, to the drug store, stro'bng up and down the .street ... 1 encountered the same spirit. There wa.s a .siiiiie and a word of good clioer from each person to the c 'her. I saw .smiles and handclasps exchanged, and ‘Hi there Tom, how’s Mary and the baby,” or “Hello, John old "lan, geo it’s good to see .vou out again.” all of this mingled with th“ Iinppy laughter of children and the discreet but cheerful bantering of | the colored folk, would cause almo.s't anyone to think, as 1 do . . 'that Columbia is truly, the .Arcadia of North Carolina, ’This could have easily been the place where Evan geline wandered hiti'usr auU yon . . . the land of milk and honev .... Welcome Visitors To..
