Wiheeler and Woolsey, that pop
ular comic duo, comes to the High
lands School Theater, August 30
31; in a side-splitting comedy of
BIG BUSINESS, entitled, “On
Again, Off Again.”
This comedy pair need no formal
introduction to the movie fans of
this region, and in their new fea.
ture attraction, are as* ijunny as
ever. Portrayed this time in dif
ferent characterizations from their
usual repitoire, Bert Wheeler and
Bob Woolsey will be seen as
hoary-headed old men, one with a
long, white beard and the other
with a goatee. By the time the
end of the picture has come
around, the screen comedians are
a pair of doddering old men.
As in previous Wheeler-Woolsey
laugh vehicles, the story is based
on a rollicking promise, interpo
lated with songs and pulchritudi
nous chorines.

L
Friday and Saturday, Septem
ber 3 and 4, brings to the scteen
at the Highlands School Theater,
that lovely, capricious, little star
—Shirley Temple—who in the
brief time of her screen career has
won ’her way into the hearts of
young and old alike. In Wee Wil
lie Winkie, Shirley has surpassed
all previous screen characteriza
tions. It also marks a new episode
in the type of pictures we may ex
pect to see little Miss Temple in,
in the future.
Wee Willie Winkie is reported
to be the most spectacular Temple
production yiet. The story is
based on the famous Rudyard Kip
ling story of India. The curley
headed child star, who has been
acclaimed as the No. 1 Tboxoffice
attraction of both America and
England, has a highly dramatic
role in this production, the strong
est supporting east of any of her
screen successes, and the most
elaborate production yet accorded
one of her films.
The cast supporting Shirley in this
highly dramatic production include;
Victor MacLaglen, C. Aubrey
Smith, June Lang, Michael Wha
len, Cesar Romero, Constance Col_
lier and young Douglas Scott. John
G. (Lucky) Ball, the famous cir
cus sword swallower, is also in the
cast, and provides for amfusing as
well as dramatic episodes in the
drama.
Everyone loves Shirley Temple,
and like to see her on the screen.
It is a well known fact around the
•studios in Hollywood, that Shirley
Temple is a “one take star.” By
that we mean, that it is only nec
essary to take her actions on the
screen, once. Shirley learns all
her new parts in each picture just
before going to bed at niglht; she
listens attentively to her direc
tor’s instructions on the stage, and
when the film is taken, it is then
ready for development. Any re
takes that are necessary in a Shir
ley Temple production are usually
due to a mas-cue on the part of an
adult film player.
The locale of “The Outcasts of
Poker Flat” is laid in the Cali
fornia Gold Rush country, immedi
ately following its first invasion.
The film is a dramatic romance
and action melodrama, with human
interest in both phases. The amal
gamation of two Bret Hart stories
constitutes the primary basis f|or
the film story. The dialogue is as
Bret Harte had it in his originals,
although in several instances John
Twist and Harry Segall, who did
the screen play, have given it a
modern twist. The characters and
situations have been retained.
All the ruthless life of the old
wild western life, as found in any
gold mining community in that
daycare present in this new film;
and realistic portrayals of the win
try blizards and rough Western
life; make The Outcasts of Poker
Hat a dramatic story from begin
ning to end.
The picture co-stars Preston
Foster and Jean Muir; and they
are ably supported by: Van Hef
lin, Virginia Weilder, Margaret Ir.(
ving, Frank M. Thomas, Si Jenks,;
Dick Elliott, A1 St. John, Bradley*
Page, Richard Lane, Monte Blue,;
Billy Gilbert and Dudley Clements.;
