And always on the twelfth of April the editors of the Advance remember the an niversary of the death of their friend, I. N. Loftin. It may be that one reason is that it was 'ou-tie next day, April the thir teenth, that the Little Printer came to help The Advance work out its salvation, ana nis birthday; of course, is always remembered. Two years have gone by and many things , have changed; The Home Town i3 a better town, purified by reconciliation and co-operation, brought clos er together by war and victory. There are none of us who would call Ike Loftin back to I 'the struggles and the physical ills which he suffered in the flesh. But there are many who " remember him, not once a f year, but frequently, and parti ' cularly when there is sorrow or Sickness or deatn in ineir .taiclsti Whatever may have ''been his errors of judgment or hia mistakes of speech or act ion, his sympathies were keen, and it was a significant fact that the poor and the cast down, the sorrowing and the suffering, turned to him quick ly, : knowing that he would . come to them gladlyand that he would speak comfort. And . this is his monument, in the hearts of his people today, whether they be rich or poor, that he ministered unto them. We ,were asked not long after his death to suggest a fitting ,s epitaph, for his tombstone, but no definite sentence came to our minds just then, and the in scription stands today "A faith ful and loyal Baptist." Today, our, suggestion would be "In v,asrauch as ye did it unto the Meastof these, ye did it unto meV' for we believe that at the . last great day, when our lives are stripped of all else, the supreme test will be not how we have preached or. what we hav? taught, but what we have done for the least of these, our brethren. ' And if we lack the brotherhood of man, we can scarcely hope to claim he fatherhood of God. The Advance is getting to press earlier and is anxious to secure earlier delivery because it is believed that earlier delivery will redound to the advantage of both subscriber and adver tiser. The soldier's homecoming has its sorrows as well as its joys. There is the grief of the parents and thei families of ihcse who do no return but have made the supreme sacri fice over there. And there is the terrible shock of coming home to find the home broken i:p and the loved one gone to join the hosts invisible. We call to mind young Sidney White and his sorrowing father and mother, and also Claude Tarkington not yet back from the service, whose wife died this morning. To these and to others like them, The Advance, speaking for itself and for the community, expresses ' un bounded sympathy. Well 'most everybody ought to be happy. There's the cir cus comingto gladden the heart of the small boy, and his elders who have to go to "take the children." There's the, Sunday1 Easter Parade for those who have new clothes, the Easter Monday "parade for the patrio tic, Easter Music, Easter' flow ers, sunshine and spring. So, don't let anybody take the joy out of life for you so long as you can help it. t. ;.. Somebody said he always read the short editorials in The Advance. We replied, "Why, there's -not much to them. They're just fillers." And this came back, "Well, you know, sometimes the filling is better than the cake." Now, the prob lem is whether to try to im prove the cake or to make the filling mc nutty. ;, The latter is the line f least resistance. IOur ad in your paper this week brought us good results." That's what The Advance man hears almost every week from some advertiser these days. If you advertise in The Advance and don't get results, change your ad. It won't cost you any thing extra. , AGONY C0L17.IN vgu iw-:cnv its sr'aixo and ADOTJT THIS TIME OP T"R YF2AR FOLKS BEGIN ASKING WHETHER THE DANCE OR THE NEAR-DANCE 18 WICKED OR NOT AND I'M REMINDED , OP A LITTLE POEM IN " "SOUTHERN LITERATURE" A BOOK , WE USED TO STUDY DOWN IN .
