Another frhool year is v.hnnl to begin. Into I " I i ; -1 h C'Av ' are coming tiie teachers who will direct the school work of our children tlui injr theses ;V.' The teachers v.-i'l become ac , quainted with the children and the children will becom: ac quainted with the teachers, but when the year's work is done these teachers arc going to leave knowing very little of Elizabeth Civ and besides the children, very few Elizabeth City people. And Elizabeth City is goi'n: to know very few '.of its teachers and very little of these whose names circum stance mikes familiar. The Advance holies that it 'v I mistaken, but we are rcadin.tr the future in the light of the past. And this newspaper' makes the assertion that Eliz abeth City is the most indiffer ent town to its school and to its school teachers of any town in the state. We talk a lot' about school spirit, and it is nothing b.d talk. The Advance venture" the suggestion that Elizabeth City people would bo more in terested in the work being done in the city's public school ii they would get better acquaint- , td with those who arc direct ing that work. It is never too late to mend and the school year is not yet begun. Is it too much to' hope that this year we may mend our ways in this important mat ter? We pay our teachers lit tle enough money, Heaven 2 knows. Can we not atone somewhat for our penurious- ness and poverty . by paying them a little more attention? it occurs to' The Advance that the Chamber of Commerce might take a hand in this mat ter. Certainly the Housewivps Lcagu& and the other women's clubs and organizations should - be interested. 'But it is the mothers and fathers of the children who are in school to whom we make especial ap peal. Know your child's teach er and let your child's teacher know you.
