St. Patrick Day favors were at each plate and four sumptuous courses were served. Judge J. 1). Leigh as toast master was never in happier vein and the 'address by Dr. W. I. Cranford of Trinity College was a delight from the standpoint of literary merit, sparkling humor, and most of all, because of its serious message. "Dr. Cranford said in part. "The church is the only thing in the world like it or that is going to be like it. "We are at the beginning of a time when the people more than ever before and the church more than ever before are going to appreciate the opportunities that are theirs. "Religion is truly the crowning climax and glory of life, but it Is of value to us only when we practice it when we turn our religion into good works. When the poet o fold Said: Oh Jehovah, our Lord, How excellent is Thy name In all the earth Who has set thy glory upon the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings has thou estab lished strength When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy lingers, The moon and the stars, which thou has ordained What is man, that thou art mindful of him! And the son of man that thou visitest him! he did not mean, surely, how insig nilicant is man. The poet's idea is what must man be that God has made him next to himself and given his dominion over all the earth. All things of earth are but the means through which man is to express his consciousness of God. The church is the people the men and the women who take the tilings of the world and turn them in the direction which they should go Henry James says that if hel,h mo(,.rn ,,,.,., na, mrrld thln had to choose between a strong body in rags and a comparatively frail body well clothed be would take the frail body with the That is but another that clothes are part good clothes, way of saying of the man.i. And the same thing Is true of all our possessions they are part of our personality, as the food that we take becomes part of our bodies, part of ourselves. And as I stand to speak before you I am literally blowing my brains out. What we get we must share or it will not only shrink. It will destroy us. "The early Christians thought that the poorer they were the better. And I have known many a man to make enough money to kill htm and it did kill him but because he tried to tako and use It all for himself. The dinner that we have shared mis ev ning was just about right. But If anybody has doubled It I feel an un easiness for him. And suppose some one of us bad tried to eat all of it himsiir What we have U part of us If we share what we have with others we give ourselves to serve others. And If we give our solves to service, the more we have the more we serve "One of the fir-' nien who really appreciated Christianity said: "I be seech you. therefore, brethren by the mercies of God. that you present your bodies, a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto God; for this Is your reasonable service. And the church Is coming more and more to realize that the man's body, which Includes his posessions. la part of him self. What I gain only to keep for myself spoils or shrinks and I spoil and shrink with II. "The church has the opportunity to add greatly to its usefulness by tak ing the right altitude toward what, unforunai ely, are frequently termed "worldly amusements.' I do not mean to be understood as approving which I have never looked upon with out a guilty turning of my head to see If any one has seen me watching It. Amusement and recreation have their place Nobody who sets out to , ,.,,. !,,, , , i na T i u mi'iiu iiuit- an intr 1.111CI (inn ill life ever really enjoys himself. But an occasional good time of the right sort, such as this occasion here to night, is a good thing. We need some amusement So these things that our bodies and our minds demand can be made a part of our religion I want to see the church bestir It self to give its young people, espe cially, the right sort of a good time. "Finally the church has that op portunity which has always been re garded as Its chief aim. the oppor tunity of leading men and women to the Light of the World, the light that grows not only brighter but warmer toward the end of our earthly pil grimage Man needs about every thing else to be freed from the bur den of sin iiiel tin1 consciousness of guilt And tin- -iipreme need Is satis fied and HatKlied only when men find and accept Jciis Christ as Savior and as Lord I)r Cranford was followed by I,.
