JONES, wed and mon to Jan 9 Cashier Interviewed Tuesday afternoon following his return from the recent special session of the General Assem bly, Representative C. A. Cooke of Pasquotank declared that the twelve day session was a specially busy one, In which a little over a thousand bills were introduced. Mr. Cooke believes that he has satisfactorily settled the chain gang question, a matter around which controversy has raged locally for many years, and he says that he feels thorughly conmpensated in eve ry sacrifice that he has made by the passage of the bill whereby the chain gang may be hired out to roadbulld lng bodies or city governments by the Pasquotank Highway Commis sion. f'Here," says Mr. Cooke, "Is an opportunity for Elizabeth City to get. her street paving relald, wherever this work is necessary, at merely! the expense of labor upkeep. Cage Hayman and Crowder 'Davis left here Sunday for some sentative McBee, of Mitchell County, had not worked out well there. McBee, it appears, had Introduced such a bill for his county in a previous session of the Assembly and it passed. The purebred place up the country, where they will, bulls' were purchased, and in the be for a few days Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Daniels and children, Monsle Jr., and Cora Mae, of Manteo, were here Sunday the guests of Mr. Daniel's mother, Mrs. Sarah Frances Daniels. Vernon Johnson of Powell's Point, has been here several days. He and his brother-in-law, Willie Ethertdge, are busily engaged oystering. Frank P. Gates, Jr, of Manteo, was down here Monday to have his Ford towed back to his home. He had the misfortune to strip the gears while down here Saturday night with his father, Dr. F. P. Gates. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hooker enter tained Monday evening at their home here, the occasion being In honor of thlr two nenhews. Messrs. Harrv and illy Self, of Westland, Va., and their friend, Vernon George. Dainty refreshments were served by Misses Trade Cahoon and Elizabeth Hooker. Those who enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Hooker's hospitality, besides the guests of honor were: Misses Rena and Helen Tlllett, Rola Melson, Tra de Cahoon and Elizabeth Hooker. Grady Owens ot Jarvlsburg, Is" here this week spending a few days the guest of Miss Mattle Tlllett. Little Doris Gasklll, who has been very sick for the past few days with diphtheria, is not any better. - first year the value of young calves sired t'y these animals was from $40 to $50, as compared with a value of from $5 to $7 for calves produced from scrub stock. However, there were some kick ers in Mitchell County who opposed the thoroughbred bull Idea for polit ical or other reasons, and as a re sult of their activities it soon became apparent that the serv'ce fees re ceived for the animals would not pay for their upkeep. Fnally the plan was abandoned. McBee lost In the next race for representative, and the bulls were sold for beef. Mr. Cooke states thai he knows the plan would be of value for improving the live stock of Pasquotank County, and that he would not hesitate to push the proposed bill if the purchase price of the bulls would be the only cost to the County, but in view of Mitchell County's experience he was not willing to take a chance on sad dling the taxpayers of Pasquotank with the additional expense of the upkeep of the animals. Jury trial In recorder's court here is provided for by an amendment in troduced by Mr. Cooke to a bill al ready on the statute books for num erous North Carolina counties. Un der the provisions of this measure, a defendant may now get a trial by Jury, if he demands it, in the trill Justice's court, or the prosecuting at torney may call for a Jury, Juet as in a magistrate's court. Another amendment affecting Pas quotank County passed by the spe cial session provides that when a person leaves at his death an estate with amounts due it. not exceeding $300, the Indebtedness may be paid into the hands of the clerk of the court. Thus i the expense of an ad ministrator is avoided in the hand ling of small estates. This law was passed at te last session of the Gen eral Assembly, but Pasquotank County was not then Included. With reference to the measure af fecting the sale of second hand mer chandise within the city, Mr. Cooke states that the City Council bill was passed exactly as the measure was framed when put Into his hands by the Council. "I am highly appreciative of the honor conferred and the confidence imposed upon me," states Mr, Cooke, "In my election to the General As sembly to represent Pasquotank County, but I am not, and will not be, a candidate for re-election. In fact, I could not accept renomlna tlon If It were tendered me. I say this with every fooling of kindness and friendliness for all concerned, and 1 say It for the simple reason Warming Tads, Coffee Percolators ; that the position, while one of trust Toasters, Grills.
