The Advance has noted with considerable interest the follow ing item under a High Point date line in a recent issue of the News and Observer: The Southerfi Railway Company : ? Wtll Inaugurate gasolln*' propeUi'd - trains on the short line between High Point and Asheboro. about November 1, unc the name service between Sal isbury and Norwood about the same date, according to a statement of an official of the company here today. A combination motor, baggage car and passenger seating capacity of 2?> and a trailer car with passenger ca pacity of 30 will comprise the equip ment of the trains. It was stated likewise that the company contem plates the employment of this new service on all similar short lines ul timately. /This newspaper has had a conviction for some time ths-t the railroads would be forced to some step to meet motor bus competition for short haul traf fic with the development ol paved highways throughout North Carolina. Jf the experiment of the Southern is a success The Ad vance wonders if it w ould be too rtiuch to hope that some of us here in Elizabeth City may see the day when smokeless and rel atively noiseless trains, with op en cars for summer which would afTord one as good view of the country through which he was passing as an automobile, will be operating on frequent and; regular schedules both between, Elizabeth City and Norfolk and between Elizabeth City and Suffolk. It sounds too good to be true. But unless something of the sort does come to pass be fore concrete roads connect Eliz l &beth City With both Norfolk and Suffolk, it looks as though the motor bus would put the Norfolk Southern out of busi ness so far as interurban pass enger traffic is concerned. Ail UiiW'iuiltlt' Position In the opinion of this newspa . per, most respectfully submit-; <- ted, Trial Justice Spence put himself in a position that he will not find tenable when he under took in recorder's court Monday morning to set himself up as ar biter of the question of when cattle quarantined under the Statewide cattle-tick eradicatiou law may be released from such f quarantine. Until he put himseJf in this i position Judge Spence did not i have to trouble himself at all r with the question of whether it t was the proper time to lift the \ ' quarantine on certain premises ? or not. That was a matter un !, der the law left with the State t Authorities and Judge Spence's sole duty was - to determine whether the law requiring the ? owner of quarantined cattle to TIMELY TOPICS Electric F?nii W.00 SrlllL JtovM 92.00 ElfCtrlf Turn Tonali-r - SO.2.1 Eloctrlr Percolator SI.'1.2.1 Icy-Hot Dolt In >1.00 I\ W. But when Judge Spence sets himself up to determine whether the cattle tick has been eradicat-1 ed on certain premises or not he is not only taking an authority not vested in him by law and as I to which he will hardly claim that he can qualify as an expert, but he is also opening up the way for every cattle owner :haled into court for failure toj dip his cattle to set up the con tention that his herd and his premises are free of ticks. | And if no cattle are dipped in Pasquotank except from prem ises 011 which the ticks can be iactually found at the time of the dipping, the complete eradica |tion of the cattle-tick in Pasquo tank will be indefinitely de ferred. | The idea of a County wholc itime prohibition officer, recom mended for Wake by the sheriff of that County, does not seem to The Advance half bad. As governor of Massachusetts Calvin Coolidge delivered a 40 ;word inaugural address. And still there arc those who say folks don't love him"! August is a month when most folks who have to meet a pay-j roll wish they were in the ice cream or the ice business. Yes, we have sweet potatoes today at the Norfolk Southern docks. We'll say we have. Make August 18th a red let ter. day 011 your calendar. It's Virginia Dare Day. Our idea of a slim chance is that of a Krupp in a French court.
