Remarkable Results Attend Use Of Chlorine For Colds And by ll>e of This Gas the Very Places Which Have Been Most Conducive to Spread of ('.olds May Become Places Where People May Go to lie Cured Bjr WILLIAM V. lA'OX (Ceiyrifht. I"*24. By TU* Ad?*nc?> Washington, March 19. ? Members of the Senate are be in;? gassed daily ? not in the halls of Congress but in a clinic con ducted by officers and civilian experts of the chemical warfare service of the Army. Chlorine, one of the mo.st deadly of the gases employed for destruction of liie durirg war time, is the gas employed, but its use in the clinic estab lished in the Senate wing of the capital is to relieve suffering rather than to cause it. Officers of the chemical warfare service assigned to study means of combatting deadly gases discovered that chlorine was possessed of prop erties which make it a restorative and preservative of health as well an a taker of life. Its uho Ir in destruc-J tion of the germs which bring on , colds, croup, influenza and pneu-j monia. Several of the Senator who i have been treated in the clinic attest i the value of the discovery. One of those most outspoken in , praise of the t.iw treatment is Sen ator Lawrence Phlpps of Colorado, who declared today he had been ' greatly benefitted by the two treai-| ments he had undergone in tliej clinic. Others whose ailments have yielded to the application of the ga3 are Senators IMttman of Nevada, Ov erman of North Carolina, Reed of Missouri and Uobinson of Arkansas. Brigadier General Amos A. Fries, chief of the chemical warfare ser vice. declared today that had the valuable properties of chlorine been known dliring the great "flu" epi demic of 1017-18, 20,000 lives of soldiers stationed In training camps in this country might have been saved. i ne original aiacovery or the cur- 1 ative properties of the gas was made at Edgewood arHenal near Haiti-! more. Although hundreds of the sol- j dlers and civilians employed at the j arsenal were stricken with the dia ; ease, it was noted that their num ber did not include a single person ! employed in the section handling, chlorine. This fact wa? brought to j the attention of General Fries, ami as a result Col. H. L, Gilchrist and > Lieut. Co. C. B. Vcdder, of the Armv. Medical Corps were assigned to | make tests with the gas as a destroy- j er of disease germs. These experi- i ments were carried on for nearly Ave years. General Fries declares that In the case of ordinary colds the tests have shown a percentage of 72.4 of complete cures, while all but three per cent of the remainder of those treated showed decided bene fits. The proportion of chlorine which is mixed with air in order to cure a cold 1b about 100,000 parts of air to one of the gas. The breathing of this mixture for an hour, repeated three times, according to General Fries, will have the effect of steril-; izlng the membranes of the nope, throat and lungs and curing a cold. The treatment, ho added, has been found especially effective in cases of whooping cough. "With a machine which our ex perts have perfected." he said, "chlorine may be turned loose in a room or auditorium with perfect safety to the occupants and with complete destruction of germs which might cause an epidemic. Tlie very places which have been found most ! dangerous in spreading disease, such as public auditoriums, churches/ theaters, railroad and street cars nn>l other public conveyances, can now be made by the use of this machine, places for effective treatment and cure of disease."
