' Aalker Atumpt Kiduap aa lrUh Girl su- pl or lrletai.uBa. ; .Yesterday forenoon, the house of Rich ' ard Huntington, ' No. 15 Second street, Chelsea, in the abjence of Mr. H, was visited bj two Irish women, with the avowed purpose of getting possession, dead or alive, of the person of a. young Irish ,rul, an orphan, who was iiring with Mr. Hantington. Hre. H. asked them if they had any legal authority for taking the girl away ; they said no ; but one was a sister und the other a cousin of (he girl, and Ihey thought they had a right to her. In Vepfyto her inquires, what they intended o doVith her, their only answer was, to place, her under Catholic influence. They "were lberiold that the girl was at libsrty go withhem if she chose; but that she . should not b forced away contrary to her will. Mrs. H Merr o rescue t!j girl, and to --$SvebeHu:e hi?ii which w.is in the girl's ;..rmi. r the infuriated women uuvked Mrs. Huntington with great vio lence, leaving upon her neck and throat the marks of their assault. She succeed ed at length in breaking away from theni and reaching the door, when she called for help, whereupon the women abandoned I their assault and fled from the house, pro testing to those who were coming to Mrs. Huntington's rescue, that there was no trouble no cause for alarm. Neverthe less, an officer was obtained, and one of the parties was arrested and bound over for trial; the other had not been found at last accounts. The explanation of this aggravated as sault is, as we understand it, simply this : some six months since, a young Irish girl, an orphan, between 13 and 14 years old, went to Mr. Huntington's as a domestic. ' She appeared unusually intelligent for one in her situation, could read and seemed de- , sirous of improving herself. She soon dis played an indifference towards the Romish i worship and religion, and became a dilii- gent reader of the Bible. She neglected i to attend the Catholic church, and declin ed, though repeatedly urged, and almost ( dragged to the Priest's house, to go to con fession ; and finally, about a month since, attended, at her own desire, the worship of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Her grandmother, it came out, was once a Pro testant, but had been drawn away from her faith by her connection with the Ro manists ; and this child had for some time been showing a decided tsndenoy towards the original faith of her ancestor. To pTtP vent this threatened abandonment of Ro man Catholicism, her elder sister and a cousin, her only near relatives in this vi cinity, had made various efforts. Their particular aim seemed to be, to get the girl to the priest's house; and so urgent had been their persuasions, that once, at the suggestion of Mrs. Huntington, she was induced to go with them, and actually got as far as the priest's door ; then broke a way, and fled home, declaring that she could not conscientiously and honestly make confession to a priest, and partake of the communion after the Catholic form. The next movement towards the same great endwe have related above. It en ded in a violent and dangerous assault, the effects of which both the girl and Mrs. Huntington are likely to feel for some time. We denve the above statements from Air. Huntington himself, and presume them to be entirely correct, Mr. H. assures us that he had never attempted to proselyte the cbild, or prejudice her against the re ligion of her parents ; and had no knowl edge of her Protestant tendencies until some time after she entered his family ; though it see i i they were of earlier date. The matter is to underg-j a legal investi gation, and with the tntigr&qaV'v. may safely leave the question whtlfner t' r- is liberty of conscience in this country r not : and whether ti.L cisunal violence caa be off red with impunity, even towards a poor, orphan Irish girl. HOW HE GOT A PLACE. A colporteur in Montgomery county, Indiana, says : " I stopped one morning at a black smith's shop. The forge was glowing brightly and the anvil ringing merrily. But as soon as I opened my bundle, and showed them the beautiful new books, the men left their work, and gathered around me. One was a young man of twenty-five. He told me that when he first left home, to earn a living for. himself, his mother gave him a Bible. He put into his pocket and started. He went to shop after shop, but without success ; all were tulL Not discouraged, he determined to try yet once more ; but here came the same cold an swer. ' We have enough.' Tired out, and almost disheartened he sat down upon a block in the shop; and having nothing else to do, pulled out his mother's Bible, and commenced reading. Soon the own er came along, .and seeing him reading, asked, What book are you reading V The Bible,' wu the reply, You can go to work,' said the owner ; " I will furnish you employment " Boys, never be ashamed to be seen with your Bible.
