Col. H. P. WatUins, a commander of the
"new Republic" ol Sonora had been arrested
hy the United States Marthnl. for "having
instituted and set on loot, or procured the
mean for a military expedition to be carried
on from San FniH-ico atiinel the territory
or dominions of the Republic of Mexico, with
which Republic the United St.ites then was j
and now ii at peace." Col. Welkins was
required to furni.li sureties in the sum ot
$10 000 for his appearance before the U. S.
Commissioner. Messrs. A. Sclover end B.
F. Washington sijned his b uid. and he was
released from custody. Subsequently. Cap
tain George R. Davidson, ag.nst whom a
warrant founded upon a similar r.hnrge had
been issued, voluntarily delivered himself up
to the Mrhal. and gave bail in the same
amount ($10,000) for his appearance for ex
animation on Monday. Msrs. C. J. Bren
ham and D. F. Douglas joined Capt. David
son as sureties for his appearance. The
complaint opon which Cot. Walkins and
Capt. Davidson were arrested was made by
Dr. Hoge. the surgeon of Walker's expedi
tion, some of tlw ck and wounded men who
retained in the Southerner feeling very much
exasperated at the manner in which they
were deserted by Walker anil his tronp.

The po'iucal news is not of much iterest.
Ths excitement still continued relative to the
rlectii n of United Slates Senator, bu there
had been no action thus far. Sacramento
lias been designated as the Slate Capito!;
and the Legislature was to meet there on the
1st instant. This action gave such offence
to the authorities at Benicia that they refus
ed to let the steamboat, ordered to convey
the Slate records, lie at the wharf until a
charge of five hundred dollars was paid.

est ever found in the State. Three thousand

the shaft, when about 28 feet deep, filled

There had been "considerable excitement
at Snu Franaisoo on the subject of an alleg
ed" illegal proceeding on the part ol associate

Court. Several notorious persons were en

ia and Washingirni city, was killed on the

Mr. Nathan Pratt, nged about fiftj', for
merly of Rhule Iflan(t. was murdered by
three Mexicans, near Q,tinrtsbourg. Two ol
them find been captured and were hung by
the miners of the vicinity. The commission
of the deed was confessed, and the incentive
to it was stated to be a report thai Mr. Pratt
hud two or three hundred dollars buried un
der hi hearth.
Mr. Charles Haydn had been shot in an
affray with Mr. Glen, at Four Creeks, in the
vicinity of Mariposa. Mr. Glen gave him
self up to the authorities, was tried and ac
quitted. Georj-e Taylor killed an Indian in Indian
Valley, without provocation ; whereupon.
Judge Lynch summoned a jury, iiied, con
victed, snd forth with hung Taylor.

ed to two years' imprisonment.

haggard, and large tears rolled down his
painted cheeks. I saw his lips quiver

Molasses possesses a remarkabf rorer nf
absorption. Some curi ous fuels in- relation
to this peeuliar property have been recently
laid before the London Medical Society.
In 1849, a number ol casks of molasses were
stowed -away nt Ihe London dock's weighing
in all, 1270 cwt. Three years afterwards
they were weighed again, and there was
found to be an increase ol weiirht amountintr
in the whole to 23 cwt Anoiher lot of 347
