EASTERN AFFAIRS.
- The steteaient that Kalnfat had been
captured by the Russians was an atrocious
falsehood. The latest report from that
quarter indicated that the Russians were
about withdrawing ram that neighborhood.
cia nghung worthj of notice had occur
red either on the Danube or in Asia.
The Loud cui Daily News says that the
Czar had sent another proposal to Vienna,
which the representatives of the Four
Powers ha3 found inadicissible and had
rejected.
The allied fleets were in Beeika Bay,
and the bulk of the Russian fleet was at
Sebastopol, and some ships .were at Secum
Kali. Both fleets had cruisers in the Black
Sea.
The Russian fleet in the Baltic is push
ing through the ice to beveabora.
The messenger bearing the ultimatum
of France and England, left Vienna on the
7th, for St Petersburg. Prussia and Aus
tria have not signed this ultimatum, their
policy being still defined ns neutrality for
the present, and mediation for the fu
ture. Intelligence from the east announces
that hostilities throughout Asia had been
suspended.
A serious insurrection had been discov
ered in Turkey, or in what is known as
Wetern Turkey, and resulted in framing
the draft of a Convention securing the fu
ture position of the Christians in that coun
try. Seven steamers had been despatched by
the Turks to Egypt, to bring troops from
Albania.
AUSTRIA AND PRUSSIA.
The last advices from Paris fully con
firm the news respecting the altitude of
Austria and Prussia on the Eastern ques
tion. Austria expressed a perfect willing
ness to join the Western powers, but Prus
sia positively refused on the ground that
as she was not a maritime power, she had
little comparative interest in the struggle
A despatch from the Austrian minister
Buol, was received in Paris on Thursday
explanatory of the affair, but its language
was said to be obscure and unsatisfactory
and indicative of a change of policy on the
part of Austria.
ENGLAND.
The first division of 14 British ships, un
der Admiral Charles Napier, was to sai
from Portsmouth on the 11th for the Ball
tic. It was reported that 3,000 British
troops will go to the Baltic for land ser
vice. The 77th regiment embarked at
Liverpool on the 11th, for Turkey.
Lord John Russell was quite on Fri
day, and unable ta attend to his duties in
the House, in consequence of which the
House adjourned till Monday.
AH the passengers of the ship Robert
Kelly had been landed safely, and the ship
itself, with the mast cut away, was got off
the rocks and towed to Kingston.
The ship Pantheon struck on the rocks
near Holyhead on the night of the 8th, and
tiunk. Eight of the crew were landed, but
the fate of the remainder was not repor
ted. Some excitement had been created, in
commercial circles by Lord Clarendon's
announcement to the Riga merchants that
all Russian produce, to whomsoever be
longing, and even in neutral vessels, shall
be lawful prizes in the event of war.
The conductors of the London Herald
had been much censured for publishing
the fall of Kalafat, as the rumor is thought
to have done much injury.
FRANCE.
The French Senate had unanimously
voted the loan of 250,000,000 france.
The first division of the troops for the
East was to leave Toulon on the 20th.
RUSSIA.
The Emperor of Russia, with his family,
bad left St. Petersburg for Warsaw, where
the Czar hopes to exercise his influence
effectually against Prussia and Austria.
SPAIN.
Advices from Spain stale that the insur
gent chief, Col. Latome, had been captured
near the French frontiers and shot
GREECE.

renewed health and happiness. Less suffering,

were they generally to adopt the use of this C r

Dr. J. addresses all those who have injured tl Qi
selves by private and improper indulgences, tor i
cret and solitary habit which rules both body and
mind, unfitting them for cither business or society
These are some ofthe sad and melancholy effects
produced by early habits of youth, viz: Weakness
of the Back and Limbs, Pains in the Head, Dimness
of Sight, Loss of Muscular Power, Palpitation of
the Heart, Dyspepsia, Nervous Irritability, Derange

DR. JOHNSTONS IN VIGOR A TING-RE M
EDY FOR GENITAL DEBILITY.
This grand and important Remedy has .estored
strength and vigor to thousands of the most ner
vous and debilitated, many of whom had lost all
hopes, and been abandoned to die. By its complete
invigoration of the Nervous System, the whole
facu.ties become restored to their proper pswer and
functions, and the fallen fabric of life raised up to
beauty, onsistency, and duration, upon the ruins of
an emaciated and premature decline to sound and
prUtine health. Oh, how happy have hundreds of
misguided youths been made who have been sud
denly restored to health, from the devastations
those terrific maladies wnich result from indis'
tion. Such persons, before contemplating
MARRIAGE.
Should reflect that a sound mind and body are the
most necessary requisites to promote connubial
happiness. Indeed, without these, the journey
through life becomes a uearv niliTlm.-io ih .

shadowed with despair, and filled with the melan

Among the numerous discoveries Science has
made in this generation to facilitate the basinets
of life increase its enjoyment, end even prolong
the term of human existence, none csn be named
of more real value to mankind, than this contri
bution of Chemistry to the Healing Art. A vat
trial of Its virtues throughout this brroad country,
has proven beyond a doubt, that no medicine, or
combinations yet known, can so surely control
and cure the uumerous varieties of pulmonary
disease which have hitherto swept from our midst
thousands and thousands every year. Indeed,
there is now abundant reason to believe a Remedy
has at length been found which can be relied en,
to cure the most dangerous affections of the lungs.
Our space here will not permit us to publish any
proportion of the cures affected by its use, but we
would present the following, and refer further in
quiry to my American Almanac, which the agent
below named, will always be pleased to furnish
free. whrcia are full particulars, and indisputable
proofs of these statements :

J. C. Avsa. Dear Sir, My little son, four
years old, has just recovered from a severe attack
of malignant bcailet Fever; his throat was rotten,
and every person that visited him pronounced
him a dead child. Having used your Cherry Pec
toral in California, in the winter of 1850, for a se
vere attack of Bronchitis, with entire success, I
was induced to try it on my little boy. 1 gave him
a teaspoonful eyery three hours, commencing In
the morning, and by ten o'clock at night I found a
decided change for the better, and alter three days'
use he was able to eat or drink without pom.
Its use in the above named disease will save many
a child front a premature grave, and relieve the anx
iety of many a fond parent. For all affections of
the throat and lungs I believe it the best medicine
extant. A feeling of the deepest gratitude prompts
me in addressing you these lines. But for your
important discovery my little boy would now have
been in another world.
I am yours, with great respect,

Da.J.C. Avxb, Sinceyour medicine has be
come known heru, it has a greater demand than
any cough remedy we have ever sold. It is spo
ken of in terms of unmeasured praise by those who
nave used it, and I know of some cases where the
best they can say of it, is not too much for the
good'it has done. I take pleasure in selling it,
because I know that I am giving my customers
the worth of their money, and i feel gratified in
seeing the benefit it confers.
Please send me a further supply, ond believe me

J. C.-Atbb. Sir: This may certify that 1 have
used your Cherry Pectoial fur upwards of one
year ; and it is my sincere belief that 1 should have
been in my grave ere this lime if 1 had not. it has
cured me of a dangeroua uffvetion of the lung,
and I do not overstate my convictions when I tell
you it is a priceless remedy.

GrthxzttswYl beg; leave through ihe
columns of your paper to communicate, to
all those who hare time and taste lor such
matters, an extract from a, letter late) re
ceived from, tfij old school-mate and play
fellow, the now distinguibelKFrof. Baird,
ofthe Smithsonian, Institution. . I recollect
him .as ix tile, iithe; , and, sine wt bor.

atnams, contiguous to . our Alma, Mater
gathering nests asdeggs. stu: snakes,
and birds, and. impaling huttf . (while
the rest of us were hum drumming J over
the language of Homer and Thucydides, -and
the perplexities of Calculas' Integral
and Differencial. With acute perceptive
faculties and more than ordinary powers
of generalization, Baird had added so much
to the domain of Natural Science as to
have won a European reputation at thirty, '
Hia ability, learning and industry gave
him just claims to bis present position, and
Prof. Henry could hardly have found an
abler assistant amongst all the scientific
young men of America' r .r
He has conversed with me very earnest
ly upon the specimens of Natural History
from North Carolina. My engagements
are so pressing and my pursuits so almost
entirely in-door, that I must band over this
matter to the boys. Perhaps your subscri
bers will iead it to their ch ldren, and some
"adult boys," to say nothing of girls, small
er and larger, may do something ' for the
cause. In the collection of snakes in the
Smithsonian Institution, it is remarkable
that only two or three gentlemen have for
warded 'more specimens than are sent by
two accomplished ladies of South Carolina,
whom I have the pleasure of knowing, and
whose opportunities for making collections
are not superior to those cf hundreds of
North Carolina ladies of my acquaintance.
Hoping that Prof. Baird, will t.ccrpt
this effort to promote the accomplishment
of his wishes as a discharge from the obli
gations he has laid upon we, and really
anxious that the zoology of our State may
have a representation in the Smithsonian
Institute, I beg that you will insert this ex
tract and request the papers throughout
the State to copy it.
Very respectfully yours,
CH. R DEEMS.
Greensboro', Feb. 3, 1854.k ;
EXTRACT OF A LETTER FROM
PROF. BAIRD TO C. F. DEEMS,
''I have had it in mind for some time tou
write and beg your assistance in making
some collections of Natural History of
North Carolina for the Museum of the
Smithsonian Institution. We have a pret
ty fair representation from other 'parts of
the country, but nothing from N. C. What
I want particularly is as complete a collec
tion as you can have made, of the reptiles
and fishes of your vicinity, in any number
of specimens, and the commonest species
of all are the most wanted. I am trying
very hard to connect the Zoology of the
Southern States, with that of the North,
and have pretty good material, but the un
known state of North Carolina intervenes,
and it is ofthe highest importance, to know
exactly what is in this benighted region.
Nothing is easier than to tell all- the idle
boys about town to pick up all the snakes,
lizards, frogs, toads, tree frogs, &c, togeth
er with the minnows, chubs, sunfish, perchr
shinera, and the like, and throw them into
a keg of spirits. Gather many small fish,
a r.d preserve inalcohoL To show what use
we make of such materials, I enclose a copy
of our Catalogue of North American
Serpents, the first of a series of which I
nope to carry throughout the whole Zoo
logy of North America. Every locality is
given and the range of the species tbue in
cluded. You will perhaps see with some
surprise how often the name of Miss. P. .
occurs. She and Mrs. D. have been most
valuable .contributors.
There are a good many other odds and
ends I would like, as the small field mill
moles in alcohol : any nests, eggs or skins
of birds, fossil bones from excavations or
banks of rivers &c. And to one particular
form oflizzard, please pay especial attention.
In many of the rivers of N. C. is 4 small
salamandroid like animal, smooth and sli
my, with four feet, and a fringed flap (girls)
on each side of tbo neck, it varies from a
few inches to a foot. Look sharp for this;
it is sometimes called water puppy or wa
ter dog. I would like as many of these
as I could get They are in shape much
like the water lizards (without scales)
found in spring bouses and under logs.
