WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY MORNING, MAY 13, 1854 WHOLE NUMBER 1077 NEWS. ARRIVAL OF THE CEORCE LAW. IHsbt-f Important Intelligence. WAR UECb VRBO tV MEXICO. blockade of the Part of Acapulco Terrible Steam boat Explosion in the Bay of San Frances :o Tfc ayi Later from Australia. The mail steamship George Law, Cap tain Fox, arrived at New York yesterday rnornin. She left Aspinwall at 11 o'clock 9n the 30ih ult. She brings the California tnails of April 15, 8347,573 in treasure on freight, and 534 passengers. She connec ted wiih the Pacific Mail Steamship Com pany's steamship John L. Stephens, and the passage has been made through in twenty-three days and three hours. The intelligence by this arrival was brought down by the John L. Stephens, which left San Francisco some hours after the Sierra Nevada, with 500 passengers. The news from Mexico is of a highly in teresting natnrr. Santa Anna had blocka ded the port of Acapulco, and the govern ment troops and those of thy levoluiionary party are busily engaged in fighiing. Rafael Duarte, the murderer of Mrs. Wills, was shot a few days ngo by a ran chero of Santa Clara county. The coro ner's jury justified the act, and said that the world was "rid of a monster." On the I5lh instant Mr. Henre C. Day was stabbed and killed in this city by Win. Sbepheard, because he (Day) would not give his daughter in marriage to Shep hearJ. Laura Keene made her first appearance on the 4th. and the Batemans on the 10th, at the Metropolitan ; the Denins appeared for the firs! time on the lOih. Mies Hays has not appeared in public since her return. Among the deaths in California we note the following: Wm. B. Dell, formerly of Bedford county, Va.j S. D. Scales, ot Tenn., and Wm. Freeman, colored Baltimore. The following report is furnished to the New York Herald by the purser of the John L. Stephens : BLOCKADE OF THE POT.T OF ACAPULCO. On the 22d, at 5 P. M., arrived off the harbor of Acapulco, saw two vessels, show ing what appeared to be Frtnch colors, lay ing off the main entrance, each of which fired a gun as the Stephens approached through the north channel, and soon after wards fired a shot which fell short of us. The engine was immediately stopped, and the he4m put to starboard. The ship fore reaching came in full view of the fort, which appeared to be crowded with men The steamer then losing her steerage way, and drifting towards the rocks on the north shore of the baj-, the engine was started ahead to Wring her head round to wind and tide, when the ship and schooner coming up under our lee in point blank range, fi red two shot3 close over us. The engine Was again stoppedTa boat lowered, and the first officer sent to inquire the cause of their firing into us. He was not allowed to board the ship, but was met by an officer in the ship's boat, who informed him that the port was blockaded, and that we must immediately leave the harbor, or he would sink us if he could. Capt. Pearson himself then boarded the ship, and wns immediately informed by the commander that his orders were impera tive from Santa Anna, to allow no vessels to pass, and that if we attempted it he would fire into us. Having sufficient coal to reach San Juan the ship was put on her course at 9 P. M . and orders given to the chief engineer to use all possible economy. 26th. The engineer reported sufficient coal to reach Panama, and the ship was accordingly put on her course for that port. During the detention of the Stephens at Acapulco, shots were frequently exchan ged between the two vessels and the fort, and, without effect on either side. Santa Anna with an army variously estimated at from 3,000 to 5,000 men, was encamped in the neighborhood, and it was expected that he would make an attack on the town during the night. 28th, at 9 P. M., arrived at Panama with barely sufficient fuel to reach the an chorage. TERRIBLE STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION. From an extra issued at the office of the San Francisco Commercial Advertiser, just previous to the sailing of the John L. Ste phens, dated April 15, 4 P. M., we have intelligence of a tenible steamboat explo sion in the bay of San Francisco. The particulars are as follows : This morning, about 10 o'clock, the steamers Secretary and Nevada left from Pacific wharf, bound for Petaluma. At 12 o'clock precisely, while crossing San Pab lo bay, the Secretary burst her boiler, car rying death and destruction in every part of the "boat to the passengers, of whom a large number were on board. So great was the force of the explosion, that the boat was literally blown to pieces. The Nevada happened to be near, and immedi ately rendered every possible assistance." She immediately put about, after caring for the survivors and attending to the dead. Many persons were blown overboard, and their bodies not recovered. The Nevada arrived at San Francisco at 3 o'clock, with the survtvors and the bodies of those recov ered. -We learn from Capt. Travers, of the Secretary, that the scene on board af ter the explosion was awful the groans of the dying and wounded, and the lamen tations of those whose friends were lost, being heart-rending. We have no estimate of the value of the freight and baggage. None of it wa saved. The Secretary was sink ing when the Nevada left. We have only given the names ascertained to be missing. There are others whose names we could not learn. LIEUT. ST R Ant's PA.RTT. From the Panama Herald of April 25, we learn the following . On Sunday Lt. Siran and his companions returned from San Miguel in H. B. M.'s ship Virago, and on the same evening, the. whole of the par ty, except Lieut. Siran and Mr. Maury, started across the isthmus, under the com mand of Lieut Truxon, to join the Cyane at Aspinwall. We regret to be obliged to add that Mr. A. F. Boggs, of Ohio, an engineer attached to the expedition, died on Sunday evening of debility. Lieut. Strain and Mr. Maury left for Aspinwall yesterday morning. The Cyane A'ill sail immediately for New York, touching at Havana for provisions. LATER FROM AUSTRALIA. Advices from Australia are to February 4th. The news not important. The steam ers New Orleans and City of Norfolk were lying at Sydney unsold. Emigration was still active between Australia and Peru.-. A fire at Hobartown, Jan. 21st, destroyed property valued at 500.000. Mining affairs were prosperous. A mon ster nugget of gold had been found near Melbourne, weighing over 52 pounds. The metal was nearly pure. The total amount of gold brought into Sydney during the week previous to the 3d of February, was seven thousand ounc es. The yield of the various gold fields was as great as formerly. . The establishment of railways through out the colony was being discussed with a commendable spirit. FROM SOUTH AMERICA. Dates from Callao have been received up to April 11. Affairs in Bolivia and Pern were as complicated as ever. Castilla still holds South Peru, where he had been pro claimed liberator of his country. He was in correspondence with President Belzus, of Bolivi;;, who had promised him assist ance. There were 42 American and 65 tnglish vessels at Chincha Islands. Sea men were still scarce, and the crews of se-eral ships had deserted. Exchange on ihe United States 5 per cent. SANDWICH ISLANDS. We have dates from Honolulu to the 23d j March. The King has called the Legis lature to meet on the 8th of April. The census returns of the islands have been published. The total population is 71,019, of whom 27.079 are males and 2,118 are foreigners. Attention has again been directed to the anomalous privilege, granted in former j ears to the missionary body, of importing jools free of dutv. The. King's birth-nay was celebrated with much pomp and hilarity, on the 17th of M.irch.
