DEATH OF A CONVICT IN PRISON.
M M. Howes, who was sent to the Con
necticut state prison for lOyears on a charge
of attempting to kill a school mistress in
liis neighborhood, died in the prison of
Wethers-field, on Sunday, the 9th inst. He
had VierMi confined about two years. The
Hartford Courier s :
Howes wii a mild, inoffensive young
man, about 21 years of age at the time of
his sentence. He had always lived on his
lather s farm, upon the side of the moun
tain, and his knowledge of ihe world .was
somewhat limited. The school mistress
boarded in his father's family, and received

nally on rernovinir to an ar'j ic?:it district,
-he wrote linn a letter cutting olf further
intimate relations. This troubled Howes,
md he became gloomy and desponding,
and in ihis state of mind, he went one day

i:ed her by the hair, .arid with a jack-knife
I inflicted several wounds upon her neck anil
lace. The cuts were not deep, however,
lie then rushed out and jumped into a
stream of water, from which he was taken
nearly death His trial and sentence fol
lowed. To the day of his death he de
clares that he was not conscious of his acts
hi the school house, nor did he recollect
that he plunged into the stream.
From the time of his imprisonment h

nun. A short time before he died, he call
ed the chaplain of the prison, -who had

he would accompany his body to the home
