The neighborhood of the Pr sident street Di'(ot was hist evening about 0 o'clock tluowii into the greatest excite ment, by a report that a German nutnod Henry Weighorst, had caused th' death of his wife by throwing at her a large campliene lamp, which exploded when it struck her person, (hi inquiry we found the report to lie too true. It ap pears that Mr. Weiglioist, who docs bu siness at the cornet of Eastern Avenue and Albemarle streets, had been awa from home all day, and on returning be tween eijht and nine o'clock in trie even ing, proceeded at once to the room when his wife was, and taking up the larai' lluid lamp, which was upon aside tai.le. imme Jiately threw it at her, which ex ploding, caused her whole body fioni the knees upwaids to be enveloped in llam. s. Mr. John Wells, a neighbor, entered the house about the same1 time, and in lus endeavor to extinguish the flames, was considerably burned. lit is sniffling very much this morntnr Fvcry etioit to save the unf ituirte wo man was made, but we tear without effect, as it is the opinion of physicians in attendance, Drs. Handy McWiliiains and Kimiem'in, that she cannot survive. Her entire liody is in neaib, a crisped state, and at the time of writmsr she is in the. greatest acrony. Justice Dornuii was sent for about t n o'clock, and took her drjKtsition, in which she cba rges hei husband with the awful crime. She further testified that on tlie night previ ous, he thrfw a four pountl weiirfit and several poiter bo'tles .it her, accompa nied by a threat to kill. The accused was taken to the Middle W.iteh Station, and this morning committed to jail lor a further explanation, by Justice Morrison. Hail was olfered, but tlie Justice vei y wis"lv refused to receive it. The poi sutr-PT has two little children, one eulit, and the other four years of age. Would it tioi be n good plain to substr ttite fir the modern custom of duelling (iitnler the miscalled "code of Atfnor' ) with pistols, r.fies. or swords, the plan adopted in Kur icfan ? It is as follows : ' When a gentleman of that nation con siders himseirig-grieved, he sends the of fender a formal ctnillenre, which, it is pre sumed, i'ttlwajys accepted. The duel Dikes place on some pen plain, and all the friends of the combatants assemble as spectAto rs. 'Ario garebt or coach, is then brourhl forth and the two combatanta place a foot close to the edge of the couch, the breadth of" which alQne divides them. A formida ble whip, made of Ilirrpoptitamua leather, is then placed in tlie hands of each, and renewed attempts areinadeby their friends to reconcile them. If. however, they ar pw. on carrying out tlieir utlair of honor,' the signal tor buttle is at last given. He u ho is mulled to the first blow, then in flicts us hard a lash as he can on kis oppo nent, who stands perfectly still to receive the compliment. ;md then prepares to re Uiin it. 'They thus continue, 'turn and turn ti'.iot.'.' to flog each other's backs ami shoul ders (tlie liPad must on no account be struck); while ihe blood flows copiously at every stroke. Not un acknowledgment of pain rsnpes the lips of either, and all the spectators remain equally mute. This continues until one of the combatants, gen erally from s:ccr exhaustion, drops his in strument of torture; whereupon the victor immediately does the same. 'The rivals now shake hands, declaring thiii they have received sufficient 'satisfac tion ; '-their Inends congratulate them on the K conciliation, their wounds are waehed. and sundry jug's of 'm-'rissa,' the natiunal beverage, provided beforehand, are produc ed, and emptied hy the spectators in honor of the gallant opponents.1' Th;s seems to be administering "equnl and exact justice ;" and the "style" is like the play of 'cutting jackets" by which country hoys sometimes test each other's prowess. DEATH OF A CONVICT IN PRISON. M M. Howes, who was sent to the Con necticut state prison for lOyears on a charge of attempting to kill a school mistress in liis neighborhood, died in the prison of Wethers-field, on Sunday, the 9th inst. He had VierMi confined about two years. The Hartford Courier s : Howes wii a mild, inoffensive young man, about 21 years of age at the time of his sentence. He had always lived on his lather s farm, upon the side of the moun tain, and his knowledge of ihe world .was somewhat limited. The school mistress boarded in his father's family, and received 'i.e i.H'Mition of Howes for it time, but fi nally on rernovinir to an ar'j ic?:it district, -he wrote linn a letter cutting olf further intimate relations. This troubled Howes, md he became gloomy and desponding, and in ihis state of mind, he went one day to the school room and demanded 8100 in cash or a promise of marriage. The school mis' ress ordered him lo leave, when he 6ei i:ed her by the hair, .arid with a jack-knife I inflicted several wounds upon her neck anil lace. The cuts were not deep, however, lie then rushed out and jumped into a stream of water, from which he was taken nearly death His trial and sentence fol lowed. To the day of his death he de clares that he was not conscious of his acts hi the school house, nor did he recollect that he plunged into the stream. From the time of his imprisonment h declined i:i health, until death relieved his s iiTerings on Sunday last, tearing the mere .skeleton of what was once a robust j'oucg nun. A short time before he died, he call ed the chaplain of the prison, -who had lie? n very kind to turn, and requested that he would accompany his body to the home of his childhood, and leave 'his remains safely in the care of his parents. The rha'plnm promised that he would do so. ( hi Mor.ilay morning he started with the ho ly for New Milford, where he delivered an address to a large number of sympathi sing friends of the family and town's co- I pie. who come flocking 111 frnm all direc i Mors.
