WILMINGTON, N. a, TUESDAY MORNING, AUGUST 1, 1854,
WHOLE NUMBER 1109
NEWS.
EUROPEAN NEWS.
The steamer Africa arrived at New York
on Tuesday with Liverpool dates to the
r 5ih July. The Telegraphic reporters
fcirnish the subjoined summary of her
iiews :
TEOGRESS OF THE WAR
It is now confirmed that the Russians
have received counter orders, and will not
juit Wallachia.
The Austrians have, for the present, en
tirely relinquished the intention peaceably
to occupy the principalities.
No new facts have been made public as
io the progress of the Prussian Austrian
negotiations. Il is believer! (hat all the
smaller German Suites will adhere to the
A-ustro-Prussmn cenvention. The feeling
iu England with respect to these new com
plications is decidedly uneasy.
There has been considerable fighting on
the Danube. The Turk3, under Umer
Pacha personally, after severe fighting,
have captured the Danube islands and the
city of Giurgevo. which they occupy. It
is clear that the Turks have now assumed
the offensive, and, with the reserve of An
glo French, the first division of which is
now at Rulschuck, will probably risk a
pitched battle.
Gro'.schakoff, with 30,000 troops, is ad
vancing by forced marches to dispossess
them of Giurgevo.
The Black Sea fleet, when last seen, was
proceeding from Odessa in the direction f
4 iScbastopol. Napier's fleet, with the chol
era on board, had gone to nnchor in Born
ttrsund Bay.
Rescind Pashit has resumed the Turkish
Almistry of Foreign Affairs.
The ex-.Ministry of Greece are indicted
for a malversion of the public moneys to
oter the recent insurrection
The cholera continues its ravages at St.
Petersburgh, and the garrison of Cronstadt
was also suffering from its ravages. On
the 1st of July 5S0 casrs were reported in
St. Petersburg !.
The cholera was also prevailing to an
al inning extent at Marseilles, no less than
100 deaths having occurred in one dy.
sr-Aix.
The news from Spain is very imperfect.
The insurgents, however, seem to main
tun themselves under Generals Srrvano,
O'Donnell, and Dulce. They number
;,000, and are going towards Andalusia.
Some movements favoring ihern hae oc
curred in Valencia.
MISCELLANY.
T NOBLE CONDUCT AT SEA.
The new screw steamer Clyde arrivod
at Ghsgow on Saturday night, on hr first
voyage from New Yorx, which she left on
the 23rd nit., having made the passage in
14 1-2 days. When she had been about
two days out from New York, the crew
und passengers wore alarmed by the cry
of "a man overboard," while the vessel was
under full headway, both from her steam
power and sails. It wa.? found that Air.
David Walker, the second steward, who
had for some days previous! v exhibited ex
traordinary dnlness of spirits, had thrown
himself into the broad and turbulent Atlan
tic. Thomas Eatimore, one of the em
ployees on board the ship, promptly leaped
overboard, and succeeded in laying hold of
the drowning man, whom he kept from
sinking for a space of twent3' minut;s or
half an hour, at the end of which time
both were taken into one of the vessel's
life-boats. Mr. Walker exhibited some
faint signs of life, but by the time he. was
taken on board the ship be was pvtsi re
covery. The passengers subsequently he'.
a meeting, and testified their sense of the
noble conduct of Latimore by presenting
hirn with a purse of eight sovereigns and
and a silver medal.
DARING OUTRAGE & ROBBERY.
On the night of the 18th instant, in Ross
county, .Ohio, three burglars forced their
way into the dwelling house of John Aber
nathy, a rich old gentleman, eighty-one
years of age, and after gagging and bind
ing him hand and foot in his bed, and se
curing the silence of his wife and a young
widow lady named Strauser, who lived
with them, by threats of instant death in
case they raised the alarm, they proceed
ed to give the house a thorough search.
Airs. S. was robbed of $100, and Mr A. of
between 80,000 and 87,000.
A SAFE OFFER.
An English paper says the following is
a copy of a placard which was posted up
in the viciftiy of Liverpool:
'""The person who left two of his toes
and the heel of an old boot in a steel trap
in AnfieKl Plantation on Sunday evening
hist, may have the same returned on ap
plication to the garilener at the cottage."
The lost property had not been called
for at the last accounts-.
NAVAL.
The Navy Department is shipping boys
for the United States razee Independence,
now fitting at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
for the Pacific. About forty of the juve
niles, whose ages vary from fourteen to
seventeen years, are already on board of
the receiving 6hip North Carolina.
SINGULAR PROCE E DING.
Early this morning, on the doors of near
.. ly nil ibe houses and stores of Chelsea was
found pasted a piece of paper, about 5 in-,
ches square, having upon it a white cross
upon a black groan) It is supposed to
be a notice of the tueetmg of some Jesuit
Society.; Traveller.

AFFAIRS IN PERU.
The Boston Journal learns from late Li
ma papers that Peruvian politics, up to the
25th June, remained as unsettled as ever.
It was supposed, however, that a decisive
engagement would soon ocur between
Castilla, the rebel, and Echeniqne. Opin
ions varied as to the final result of the
war.
The country was overrun by bands of
robbers and cu-t-tkroats-, who. taking ad van
tage of the distarbeJ sfitte of affairs, pillag
ed and murdered by the wholesale. On
the lOih of June a party of about fifty of
these men, called 'Mountaineers,' attacked
and murdered, in cold blood, Senor Jose
Alejo Torelas, the owner of a' hacienda
about fourteen leagues from Lima. Oi the
1 1th they pillaged the estate of Chaclaiayo,
about eight leagues from the city, carry
ing off all the money and valuables thej
conld find and killing three men. On the
Nth a party of them attacked the hacien
da of San Pedro, eight leagues from the
city-, defeated a body of soldiers who were
dispatched against them, killing their lead
er, and finally, alter beating several per
sons nearly to dea'h, made good their re
treat, cn-rying- with thein a large amount
of valuable property.
The city of Lima was again thronged
with gold-seeking Australians, of whom
about two hundred arrived in the latter
pail of June. Many wi re in poor health
and destitute of money. The gold excite
ment had died away in a great measure,
and those who occasionally returned from
the interior almost invariably came with
empty pockets and broken heal'h.

A Cincinnati paper is responsible for the
following :
A young gentleman who hail beer pay
ing his addresses in propria persona to a
young lady in this ci'y, left a few months
ago and went down the river on business.
A correspondence was immediately opened
between the enamoured pair, and exchang
ing several letters tae young lady was
mortified to find that, her letters were un
answend, and consequently she ceased
writing. But the real secret of her receiv
ing nj letters was ihe fact that another
young lady of the same name, supposing
tlfv were intended for her, took them from
the I'ot Office n4 opeTeira corresponden
ce with her proxy lover. Some two months
passed away, when the 3-0, mg man wound
up by a direct proposal and insisted on an
immediate answer, averring at the same
time that he thought live tone of her letters
verv diff -rent from those received when he
first left Cincinnati, and upbraided his fan-
love with inconstancy. This last epistle
was too m'tch for our romantic incognito,
and being conscience smitten for the part
she had been acting, and fully persuade. 1
that some other lady had been pining for
the young man she was wooing, sought
her cmt, arwl (eUvreiY ir e letups op to their
rightful owner. The matter wna speeditly
arranged, and the real lovers have s:nce
become united in the bands of wedlock.
A YOUNG MAN
These three words are suggestive of
thought a young man. How much of
strength, what beaming eyes, what high
resolves, and proud starlings for fame!
What yearnings to be rich ! What hopes
of happiness! What mines of gold ! What
height of greatness ! What excess of joy,
these three little words conjure before the
mind ! A young man ! Does he mean to
be drunken? To be poor? To be dis
honored ? To have the children laugh anil
point the finger at him? To strike down
the defenceless woman ? To deform inno
cent children 2 To turn home into worse
than a howling desert? Oh ! assuredly
not. Nor docs he think so, while he leans
back in the gorgeous saloon, and amid
flashing lights and the bewilderment of
beauty, aided by every artifice, takes to
his heart, to his soul hugging il as the mis
er hugs his treasure the fiend that deso
lates. Well, time has passed
swiftly, the brand is burned out; it is char
red and blackened, the star fallen from, the
heaven of home.
He bickers, he quarrels, he. laughs with,
eilly leering, and kicks at the harmless
chairs and tables He chatters nonsense
and thinks it wit. He maltreats his wife
and children, and curses them, himself, ami
all the world. Alas poor drunkard !
Wherever you behold him, you see 'some
thing that should have been a man !'
LIBERAL CONTRIBUTION.
We are pleased to learn from the very
efficient agent, A. C. Morton, Esq , that
our towsman, J. T. Soulhall, Esq , proprie
tor of Jarratt's Hotel, has contributed $50
to the Union Agricultural Society of Vir
ginia and Norih Carolina. Mr. S. has ever
manifested a deep interest in the cause of
agriculture not in words alone, but in
deeds, which speak much louder.
Richmond Dispatch.
The Day after twenty rogues had es
caped from jail out west, the editor of the
village paper had an eloqu-erit article on
the morals of the place not r prisoner
within the walls of her jails. This may
be called turning things to account.
AN ODD WATCHMAN.
The Cincinnati Gazette tells us that an
Irishman, undoubtedly crazy, may be daily
seen walkin-g arownd the Cathedral, in
that city, with a loaded cane, belt and
sword, and a feather in bisjiat. He claims
to be a special watchraan from God to
guard the cathedral an4 th Bishop's pal
ace from being attacked by the- heretic
Protestants.
THE ELOQUENCE OF DISTRESS.
A Western editor appeals in the follow
ing eloquent language to the sympathies
of his delinquent subscrfbers :
'We cannot help thinking how much
easier an editor's life might be ma Je if his
generous patrons could only bear hi ; better-half
scraping the bottom of the- four

ASTONISHING CUKE.
Patterson, N. Y , '20th, 1351.
Ie.-ers A.H.&. D Sands: Gentlemen. Hav
ing witnessed tho must beneficijl effects from the
use of yo"r Sarsnparilla, it gives me pleasure to
send vol the following statement in regard to my
son. In the spring of 1348 ho took a severe cold,
and after eight weeks of severe suffering the disease-settled
in his loft l'-g and foot, which soon
swelled to the utmost. The swelling was lanced
bv his physician, and discharged most profusely;
after that no less than elevt n ulcers furmid on the
leg and foot at on" time. Weliad fivedifferent Phy
sicians, but none relieved him much ; and the last
winter found him so emaciated and low that he was
unable to leave hU c. I, suffei ing the most excrucia
ting pain. During this ti:e the bone had become
so much affected that piece alter piece came out, of
which he has now more than twenty-five preserved
in a bottle, aryig from one ha lo owe od a half
inches in length. We had given up all hopes of bis
recovery, butat this lime we were induced to try
your Sarsaparilla, and with its usa his health anil
appetite began immediately to improve, and so rap
id was the change that less than a dozen bottles ef
fected a perfect cure.
With gratitude, I remain trulv yours,

DR.SWAYNE: Dear Sir Believing it a duty
1 owe to the public, and in jnstioo to you, 1
have thought proper to make known one of the
most extraordinary cutis, in my own case, that
has ever been truly recoreled. In me month of
October last, 1 was afflicted with a severe gather
ing in tny breast, Which formed a large abscess-,
and also communicated to my lungs and very
much afflicted them, and discharged large "quan
tities of corruption, external and internal. My
breath could also pass through my lungs and out
through the cavity of my breast with apparent
ease, attended with a violent cough day and night,
loss of appetite, and cstreme debility, sothai my
physicians though l my case extremely hopeless
and beyond ihe power of medicine. I remained
in this wretched condition for a lone time, until I
was wasted to a mere skeletejn, and there fcemcd
lo be no hope for me, but, having read in the pub
lic papers of the many wonderful cures performed
hy your COMPOUND SVRUP OF WILD
Cll ERRY, 1 immediately sent to Rail i more for
five bottles and eomttwrrced its use, and, to my
great satisfaction and that of nvy anxious family,
t he abscess or opening in my lungs began to heal,
and the cough subsided, and on using ten bottles
I was restored to perfect health. I feel very grate
ful, nnd firmly believe tftat in your medicine, un
der tho blessings of Divine Providence, I am in
debted for this great change, and am happy to say
that 1 am now enjoying a? good health as 1' ever
have.
