A few evenings ago, as iltn cars of the Cafrtillton Railroad were tipprotcljing the city, a hit le girl nbout lhree ye;ir.s oll r.in in front of ihe engine and stopped on ilie cen tre tif the track. The brackemen utieinpipd to stop ih engine as soon bs the child w.is perceived, but on and on hurried the iron monser. and just as it was nbmst to cruslt into J he earth i he benuteo.is viciim which thus su innoceutly braved its comtnir, ihe strong arm of fin athletic young man was . stretched forth, nnd at the hazard of an--other life the child was saved. Loud was the shout of applause from the few who witnessed the daring deed. n:l in triumjh the yonng man bore the child away, and delivered ii to its mother. A113' attempt to describe a mothi-r's f-elinirs on such tin occasion would be more than vain. She frit as a mother alone can feel, when the !arlirir of her heart her only child is rescued from the very jaws of death ; and with an eloquence which no words can convey, she looked aud spoke her thauks. That mother was a widow, young, and fair a ih incarnation ol a poet's dream : and withal, she was blessed with no little of this world's goods ; of cour.se she was grateful to the preserver of her child's life, and (is he was poor, she offered to bestow upon him a goodly largess He, however, refused to accept any reward fjr doing what he considered to be his duty, and so the mailer for the time rested. Since then an intimacy has prung up between the young man and ihe grateful widow, nnd ihe result was. that yes:e day they went to-rether to Mobile wht-re the widow's nn me is at the. hymnial altar to be changed, nnd the young man is 10 be come not only the protector, but the step father of the child he saved. May the joys of the twain increase, and their days be many. N. O. Trut Dtlta, July 10. A BRUTAL SCHOOI.MISTKF.SS The magistrates of Biighton, Ling land, have recently been investigating a charge of aggravated assault, preferred against Mis. Emma Smith, who keeps a school for children in lhat city, and who, as alleged, had cruelly Ireated a liitle girl three years old, named Oiowne. The evidence went to show lhat the lit tle girl had offended the governess by dirty habits in bed. The governess rub bed the dirty blankets in the child's face and: made her lips bleed. By the or ders of the governess, the child was then placed naked in a coal cellar for some time, with veryr little food, and, on a succeeding day, having repeated the offence, the child was placed naked in the wa?h-house, and Mrs. Smith ponred foftr pails of water over her, until her breath seemed stopped. It was also stated that Mrs. Smith had beaten the child Vpry severely. The magistrates very properly ordered the defendent to be imprisoned for two months. V.. A CAUTION TOSCOLDS. yb following Act of assembly was pas stdia Virginia in 1662: "An Act for Pun ishmint ef Scandalous Prrsnnr. SOCIETY DOWN EAST. It is hard to tell ihe extent of rascality lown Kast. Every few d.iy3 some new instance of speculation, great or srnill, comes to light. Men of high position have turned out to stealing and rubbing. The moral and political philosophers of thatlat intdeO'ight to assign some cause for this epidemic of scoundrelism. If these frauds and peculations hail happened South, they could have been disposed of easily. The lusiiirition of the domestic slavery of the black race would have accounted for them all. Indeed, the state of morals in the North is very low, and it is worth consider ing whether it is not the duty of the South 10 jret up societies, and send missionaries in order, if possible, to bring about a reforma tion. They have missionaries forthe. "five points" they have street preachngrand re form societies : but there is a field that is ad I v eT tecfWt" WsHt 'Street,' -Jffi&JH& nue, and Trinity church neeljjnlt ruction and admonition. The South should take these places in hand They will have a hard task of it; for ;he depravity of such places is terrible. Publicans ar.d harlo's were not entirely hopeless ; but the Scribes and Pharisees were not reached even by a divine teacher. What's to be done for this portion of society? There is a large cir cle of characters that may be thrown into the same class. Beside bankers and bro kers, there, are politic-il preachers, philo sophical editors, lecturers, male and female hard cases. Some of ihese have been teaching, and others practising. The late developments show tho rouenness of the whole class. They need preaching of the right son. Louisville Democrat MOURNING GOODS.
