From Ike New York Her Aid. n THE UNIVERSAL" JUBILEE.", I ope 1'ius tne Xvmtn nas proclaimed lo the faithful throughout the world a three months' jubilee or general indulgence. The Holy Father has been moved to this .solemn act in consideration of the many jnd grievous afflictions under which the .civilized world is at this moment suffering. Wars and earthquakes, and pestilence and famine, have been in all ages regarded" as -scourges with which tho- crimes of man kind have been punished ; and prayer and .sacrifice have been the only recognized panacea for these evils. The dissensions between potentates which have embroiled Europe in a sanguinary war, the pestilence which stalks abroad in ci'jr and hamlet, the earthquakes and other calamities which i .- i - . f I lit Ve, UIIB IU UJttKV. lliu jjivaeiifc cui ui lunusual destructivcuess to human life, are all , by him referred to that one great en gendering cause namely, the' sins and transgressions of the sons of men. And .therefore it is that, in his encyolical letter given at St. Peter's, in Rome, on the 1st of August, he calls upon the hierarchy of the -Church to incite, through their clergy, the faithful to join in supplication to the throne -of grace, that the dissensions of Christian princes may be set at rest, that peace and tranquility may be accorded to the people, -and that the arrows ofdivine wrath may be stayed. .. . ' -; But ail these calamities combined are in the eyes of his Holiness less intolerable than the heresies propagated on all sides. Indif ferentisra and infidelity appear to him to have far more terrors in their train than . even war and pestilence. The latter are, at worst, mere temporary evils, of compar atively ephemeral existence ; .but the form er, if permitted to Utke root and spread, tinay encompass the earth, and in connec tion with the spirit of revolt, may crush and trample upon the thrones of monarcbs and the chair of apostles. And; so to guard against such a dreadful - contingency, the J 'ope calls for the exercise of the greatest iieal and the offering up of the most fer ment supplications to prevent the growth of shese dreaded demons ol tnndeiity and se dition. . The time was when the successor of ;Sait Peter was the acknowledged arbiter sSetween warring kings, and when heresy jnd schism, if they dared to lift their heads, were crushed out by a speedy process. Something like the same spirit still lives at iXoim : tho will is there, but the power to enforce it is fled forever.; Nevertheless, if it is believed that the prayers of the Church vill avail in the present crisis of mundane tfikirs, we will be glad to see them brought tnto servic. A great deal can be. done in three months. . Besides, the season will be prooilious as the winter will, probably en force a truce in the operations of war and -cholera: and tho prayers of the faithful -will at all events seem to have had a favor ble hearing. - ; ; . ' In connection with this subject it is an Vtounced that a special convocation of the hierarchy of the Church will be held at Rome, after the termination of the jubilee to decide on the doctrine which is hereaf ter, to be deemed orthodox in relation to the immaculate conception of the Virein. and to promulgate the belief of the Church on iiidk wiui, ... auuvtua io nave oeen ',onae unaccountable. dUatorinesg in fixing . inn aogma, out oi course it is better - late than never. It acts simultaneously apon the stomach, the circulation and the bowels and thus three processes, which are ordinarily the result of three different kinds oi n cdicine, are carried on at the same time, through the instrumentality of this one remedial agent which gently stimulates while it disinfects and expels irom the siomsch and bowels all that is irritating, and at the same time cstores vigor and tone. Many other preparations imitate in oearing the name of Sarsapnrtlla, and in that their resemblance ends, being often prepar ed from worthless and inert roots, and of course possess no heating or curative" properties, and pa tients in making choice of which they will use, should Hike no other, but that one entitled to their confidence,' from the long list of cures it has effect ed on living witnesses, whose testimonials and residence have been published, and who are still bearing daily test ittony in lis worth. ASTONISHING CURE. ' ' - - Pattebsos, N. Y , 20th, 1851. Messrs A. B. dr. D. Sands: Gentlemen. Hav ing witnessed the most beneficial effects from the use of yotir Sarsoparilla, it gives me pleasure to send you the following statement in regard to my son. In l he spring of 1813 he took a severe cold, and after eight weeKa of severe suffering the dis ease settled in his left lg and foot, which soon swelled to the utmost. The-swelling was. lanced bv his physician, and discharged most profusely; after thit no less than eleven ulcers formed on the lev snd foot at on time. We had fivediffcrent Phy sicians, but none relieved hira much and the last winterfound him so emaciated and low ihafhe waa unable to leave his 1 ed, suffering the most excrucia ting pain. During this time the bone bad become so much afkcted that piece after piece came out, of which he has now more than tweniy-five preserved In a bottle, varying from one half to one and a half Inches in length. We had given up all hopes of his recovery, hntat this time we were induced to try your Sarsaparilla, and with its use his health and sppetiie begun immediately to improve, and so rap Id was ths change thatless than a dozen bottles ef fected a perfect eure. ; - With gratitude, I remaintruly yours,. Sir: An afiair has happened here be tween the soldiers and tfee IntJmn which ought to be properly noticed bv the United1 States Government : HaTin been an eje witness to the batttle, I consider it my du ty to furnish a strict account cf it and ii causes. " ' :'. ' v ,. " , ' In the' first place, on the 1 7th August, a train of Mormons passed this place. The Indians, who were encamped hers wailing for (heir payment from Government, had no provisions, and were of course acx:?us for something toC eat As tha .1 ?rmon were passing a lame cow, bclonjiiij ta t man in the rear of the Mormon train, be came frightened and ran into the Indian camp. The Mormon left the cow behind, and so one of the Indians, a Minnecosha, shot it down, and with bis companions ate it up. The Mormons then went to tbft Fort and reported that; the Indiana had killed one of their cows. : On the 19th, about two o'clock in the afternoon, Lieut. G rattan, with a command of twenty-seven soldiers, and Auusuc Lucien, interpreter, arrived here to arrest the Indian, who had killed the cow. t ac cordingly sent f-r the chief to go with tho lieutenant and make the arrest , They ac compained him, tut the Indian was not willing to give himself up, saying that he would die first While the Bear Chief of the Wazazies was standing, with thre otner cDicls, the Lattle Thunder, the IJifr Partisan, and the Man who is afraid of his Horses, among the soldiers, the lieutenant ordered his men to fire. They did so, and wounded' the Bear Chief and bis brother. But one round was fired, when the Indians in turn charged, and succeeded in routing the soldiers and killing all of them with the exception of one private, who is not expec ted to recover. Lieut Grattan and two of his men were killed while standing by their cannon, the lieutenant receiving twen ty-four arrows, one of which passed through his head. As soon as the sofd'ers saw their commander fall they took to flight. but were all killed within half a mile of this place. The Ogalallah' camp was about one mile distant, and a . white mau named Lefroy lott was staying there at the time. Being a Sioux interpeter, tha chiefs requested him to stay between " lift camps to , prevent tho young men from"" charging on the soldiers, but he could not succeed, and barely escaped with his life. . e e f After the battle the Chiefs came in my house, and said that, as the young men ha killed all the soldiers that had come to fight them, they would now go and slaugh ter tne rest of toe soldiers at tne fort, burn all the houses, and kill all the whites on the river. But I told the Chiefs lo stop mem irom so doing, assuring tnem tuai, since the soldiers bad commenced thu quarrel, it would be overlooked by Govern. ment - uut they tben rushed in the bouse. and demanded of me to give them every hing that they wated: To save our live I gaveihem every thing that 1 had in my store, to the amount of two thousand dol lars. The next day they went to the post of the American Fur Company, took all tho goods tnat were sent to tnem by Uovern. ment, and pillaged the store. The situa. tion of the traders and of Fort Laramie u perilous in the extreme. I was requested by the commander of the fort to bury the lead soldiers, since he bad not men enough to detach a party for that serr ce, and I succeeded in doing so. As far as I know any thing about In. dians, I think that our Government ought to send five hundred mounted men, veteran troops, to keep the Indians in subjection a ' f ana one company oi jnianiry IQ guarl inn fort I he Indians in tne recent bailie, af ter killing all the soldiers, broke their can non to pieces and carried off their musket and animals. As for placing the infantry on a prairie to fight with Indians, it is juit the same as putting them up as targets ly te shot at. There -were about one thou sand Indians in the battle. Yours, truly. JAMES BORDEAU, 'per Samuel Smith. . From the National Intelligencer, All Partial Evil Universal Good. The Greytown affair, according to pub. lie report, is to verify the dictum of th poet, by accelerating a general , ana raoai settlement , of the long-standing Cehiruj American difficulties. That affair waa 'evil" enough and "small" enough certain ly, and if the Secretary of Stale has mana ged to turn his own error to any good ac count he will prove himself very clever or very locky, and we shall be willing to civ; "him fall credit for it, besides having our . . i . ..." . confidence sirengmeneu ia lac pnilosopny ofihepoet The story we allude to u found in the following Jelley'of the intelli gent. Washington correspondent of tha Journal of Commerce: Wasuisctos, September 15. I have .reason to believe that the Central American question is about lo be settled between the United States and Great Bri tan in a manner mutually satisfactory. The Greytown affair has served the good purpose of expediting an adjustment Tbii principles of. adjustment are agreed upon here. As Mr. Crampton is a sty diplo? matist, and was greatly annoyed al the ex posure of the treaty which he made wU'-t Mr. Webster, (which exposure was ih cause of its failure,) it is to be hoped that the particulars of the new. project will not be prematurely divulged. Of course tb British Government is yet to be consulted on the subject of the project. The inter? ests of both Governments .require a speedy adjustment of the subject Of course the arrangement will include an indemnity for, the destruction of property of British suL. jects at Greytown. - fjSD VOI.
