Wilmington,-August 17, 1851. MISCELLANY. Personal Controversy Almost a Duel, Ac. Philadelphia, September 24th. A sharp personal . correspondence has oc curred between Senator Cooper president of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad, and JVlorton McMichael, Esq., editor of the i l r. .v. s : : . - X'imaueipiiui nuttu American, ju cunse quence of articles published in that pa per reflecting on the city subscription to the Erie arid Sunbury Railroad as ob tained by false pretences and malver sation. Mr, Cooper add resed a note Asking Mr McMichael if the language .applied to him. In reply, Mr. McM. de filed his right to question him, but said that he was legally, morally, and per sonally responsible for that, as for every thing that appears in the columns of the Worth American. Mr. Cooper then sent for the Hon. Wm. Cost Johnson, of Maryland, to act .as his friend, who was the bearer of the challenge to Mr. McMichael, who asked two days for consideration. At the ter mination of that time Mr. McMichael declined the meeting on the ground that it was his imperative duty as a public journalist to animadvert upon such transactions, and that he therefore could jiot be held personally responsible. It is intimated that the correspondence will be published in case of any repti tion of the charges in the North Ameii can. By a provision of the Constitution of this State the sending of a challenge is made a misdemeanor, punishable by line and imprisonmet, and makes the challenger incompetent to hold any office at trust, honor or profit. braveTnd patriotic. The Buffalo Commercal Advertiser M Tuesday, the leading Whig paper of Western New York, littered the follow ing brave and patriotic : sentiments on the subject of the meeting of the Whig Convention at Syracuse ; 'We believe nothing is lost by frank ness, and we may as well speak plainly. Jf the Convention which meets lomor j-ow shall pass resolutions for the repeal of . lb Compromise of 1850, we will repudiate them. If it shall make the repeal of the Nebraska Act -a part of the platform, we shall go agsinst it ; not fjecanse we consider such repeal undesi rable, but" because it is utterly imprac ticable, and will consent to run no wild goose chase after unattainable objects. If. the Convention shall say, without qualification, that we must admit no more slave States, we will not be bound by its dictum t for although we were, at the time, opposed to the admission of Texas, we recognize and ars ready - to fulfill the obligation the country incurred jn the consummation of that act. We consider our obligations to ilie country superior to our obligations to party, and we do not hesitate to declare that we will lend ourselvs as accomplices in no scheme for the uphoIJing ' ol a party at the expense of public faith ana public honor. : OrXft iai h"n" Spjrix Barrel for sale by Barret for sole by ' Ctwgept. tef JAMES E. Alany other preparations imitate in nearing the name of Sarsaparilla, and in that their resemblance ends, being often prepar ed from worthless and inert roots, and of course possess no healing or curative properties, and pa tients in' making choice of which they will use, should take no other, but that one entitled to their confidence, from the long list of cures it has effect ed on living witnesses, whose testimonials and residence have been published, and who are stiii bearing daily testimony to iis worth. .. In the spring of 1843 he took a severe cold, and after eight weeks of severe suffering the dis-, esse settled in his left b-e and foot, which soon swelled to the utmost. The swelling was lanced by his physician, and discharged most profusely; after that no leas than eleven uleers armed on the (eg and foot at on'. time. Wehad fivedifil rent Phy sicians, but none relieved him much ; and the last winter found him so emaciated and low that he was unable to leave his I ed, suffering the most excrucia ting pain. During this time the bone had become so much affected that piece afterpiece came out, of which he has now more than twenty -five preserved in a bottle, varyipg frorn one half to one and a half tncnes in tengin. we naa given up an nopes ot Pis recovery, butat this time we were induced to try your Sarsaparilla, and with its use his health and appetite began immediately to Improve, and so rap id was the change that less than a dozen bottles ef fected a perfect cure. "f'Sr MISCEULANY, From the (ienrxc Evangelist. ; CATHOLICS: Their Early Settlement and Present Post, tlon In Tills Country. Thirteen rears after the landing 0f tha Puritans on Pljmouth Rock;, Caiiiortca, (emigraung: from England) commenced the settlement of MarjlanJ, under ihe guiu anre of Lord Baltimore, a distinguished member of the lfomish Cbuich. Sliorily afierwards, Catholies fror Spaia eomu,e. ced the seitlement of Florida, and for a longjme.were almost tb fscltisive tccu pants .Qf-jJlat section of our Union. At an ea'rljr period, "Jouisiana, Arttansa?, rh4 Missouri, were settled bjr French CaihoJics introduced by Jesuitical priests, who were the first to explore that extensive region. Texas, New Mexico, and California, al-i soy were settled by Catholics; 'and till an-, nexed to the United States, Protestant im fluertce was, for the most part, excluded. Moreover, our Northern frontier, from tho month of ibe St. Lawrence to the upper Litres, has, from no early period, been ex-, posed to tho aggressive movements of the Catholic population from the opposite shore; and not a few of the towns and. villages along our northern border were settled by Catholic's from the Canada shore. WuVsu.cb a beginning, at so many diff. erent points in our vast territory, the cx-t pectation might very naturally have been, indulged, that, in process of time the faith of Rome would become universally diffuse ed,' and the power of her priesthood receive undisputed homage through the land. Such expectation, however, has hitherto been very much ''like a dream when ono awaketh." Still, they are nu ajtogethef disheartened with respect to their future as cendancy; so, at least, we infsr from some of their more recent assumptions, and news-: paper predictions of what may be expected from thrm) when a controlling influence shall have been secured. This apparently growing confidence in respect to the future, which recent move-, mentfe, as well as predictions, have evin ced, is based, not so much, probably, ox their early ocenpancy of our country, ns on the fact, that within a comparatively limi: led period, vast multitudes of Irish Catho lics have emigrated IQ ouf shores. Sevei'a millions, it is supposed, have found a home in this land within the ' last fifty years. And now German Catholics are poqripg iq upon us in equal or greater numbers. This, growjpg accession to their numerical strength, very naturally awakens the .z pectation that by and by the sceptre of unjj versal dominion will be in their han.ds:l Intimations to this effect are not unfrO: quently given out. Catholic journals air ready speak boastingly of their grQwinj strength, and significantly insinuate their intentions as soon as the favorable moment fnr nftisyn ellall ntrffira Such being1 their views of prospective elevation, it mav not be amiss tn whisnes f " J T in their ear, that however seemingly aus: picious tho future may n(,ip appear, it i possible that their flattering anticipations may have no other realization than that of sheer disappointment. It may be safe, n( Icftsl, lo admonish them that t'he that pu( leth on the harness, should not boast him self as he that putteth it off." J , For-their sake, and for the sake of ou native population, who sorrjetiiaes indulge in fearful apprehensions respecting the coming future, it may not be out of place. to lav bp lore tliem a lew statistics, eratner: ed from the fj. States Census touching tha comparative pcclesjasf jcal strength of both our Protestant and Catholic population a( iuc pienciii lime. That the former have no great occasion, for alarm, or the latter for blasting, may be inferred from the following recorded facts : '.'-'--, In Maryland, where Popery iq this, country fiist gained a fooling, there are now about 800 Protestant churches, antj only sixty-five Catholic. In Florida where their next permanent settlement was commenced, there are 147 Protestant churches, an4 only five Cathcn lie. In Louisiana there are 223 Protestant and 55 Catholic In Texas, J51 Protes5 tants and 13 Catholic. In California. where a little time since the Catholic reli gion exclusively prevailed it npsv hardly nas any iootUoJd, white protestantism is beginning to exert a predominant influence through all parts of that extensive country. ihe census just published reveals the further fact, that in all the United States, the Catholics have but 1,112 churches, accommodating only G21,0P0 persons, which is about one-eleventh of the number of the Methodist denomination of thp poun. ry, and scarce) ppe-pigtitj) tfcq.1: fif the Baptists, and pot ppp fpurth that of the Presbyterian population. The entire Pror testant population pf lb,e cpuntry, compar: ed with that flf Catholic, is about es twelve to ope. These are facts which should be universally known, that the former may be encouraged and the latter disheartened in their respective aspirations. ATTEMPT TO POISON A CHfLP A circumstance ofa revojtjng charr acteKxeurred p Richmond on SaturT day morning, the evil results of which were happily frustrated. The particu lars are thus tjetaijed by the Dispatch t A negro girl, named Jane, 12 years old, in the employ of Mr. J. II.
