WHOLE NUMBER 1140 VOLUME IX -NUMBER 89. li r . . I, v v MISCELLANY. " SWEDISH I M MIGRANTS. The Boston correspondent' of the Inde pendent writes that "a highly respectable company of Swedish passengers, number ing S09 persons, anrivrd in that port on the 3lt Aug., by the 'Great Britain from Gotteoburg. Ob the following Thursday they -marched to the Worcester depot; and took passage for the Far, West. 1 wag u toost gratifying eight ; the men inarching in ft oat with muskets, two American flags, and a banner wiih this inscription, 'Hail Columbia, Land of the Free! we will be no burden to Massachusetts; the women fallowing, and wagons with children and bairgage bringing up the rear- They had farming: iinpleutfntsj.mechaaica tools, spin., riing-wheels, etc . no-finoney for. the put ch ise f litnds afiu, what is better, they www temijcrtue,' well clad, robust, and looking the.veriest lovers" of a free soil." We care not how many ships freighted with such a class of immigrants, come to our shores. They are Americans at heart find in principle. Retaining of course a feeling, of affection for their native land, and .we respect them for it, they have yet torn themselves away .from their native soil to plant themselves in our soil, and be henceforth American. They are, we sup pose, descendants of those brave men who once battled, with Rome, and are therefore Protestants. We shall have such as co workers in a common cause , for indeed all true Protestants of whatever land are one in heart, against a common, foe. These immigrants come from the land of the great Gustavus Vasa, whose wisdom secured the firm establishment ,of the Reformation in Sweden, and of the greater Gustavus Adol phus, the champion of Protestantism against Popery in the Thirty Years War. We recollect having met with a similar company" from Sweden or-Norway several years ago, and discovered a Life of Franklin", among- them, which ho doubt had helped to kindle in their breast' a de sire to see America. t; v ' Such, a j, welcome, band of immigrants came, a few years since, from Holland, and settled in Michigan, where they t are now in a flourishing condition. They were, fu gitives from religious oppression, seeking freedom io worship God, and are true-hearted, intelligent Protestants, of . the Dutch Reformed, order, and of the same stamp with the early refugees from Popish tyran ny, whose descendants, of mingled Dutch and Huguenot blood, now. form a substan tial part , of the population of New York -and New Jersey. No more uncompromis ing enemies to Romanism are in our coun try than this same Dutch and Huguenot population. They may be relied on in the pending straggle as true to all the sad or .glorious recollections of the past. "persecution of catholics. The papists do really, and it is very laugh able, begin to whine about persecution. We may next look to hear Satan making -aa outcry about his manifold - trials. One would think that, with the blood of inno cents for long centuries staining their gar ments, these papists would be silent about persecution. But there is no end to Rome's effrontery . She can broil, boil, burn, roast, torture, in all -the methods -devised by a horrible ingenuity, those whom she deems heretical, and then, on the' least show of resistance or righteous indignation against her outrages, can put on the air of a meek sufferer with the most charming sangfroid, and cry out that she is persecuted. But we tell her that something more dreadful than an occasional popular outbreak, con--dftjuned by the great mass of our sober pop ulation'," and especially, something very different' from "the uprising American move ment, must occur, before her hypocriticial moans can receive much attention. Our people know her too welt to be drawn into false symphathy for her. They only wish that she would cry in good earnest with sincere penitence - for her horrible Tsrime against God and humanity. " Why, this rJihrek, instead of whining about her sufferings from these "godles" Americans, ought to be thankful for our .Protestant and Republican clemency. We j do not wish to huit her. We only mean that she shall not hurt us, not, if we can prevent it, hurt her .miserable dupes. And, indeed, what treatment has she received at our hands She has been courted, flatter ed, bowed down to, by politicians, until she begins to fell strong and to show her true mettle ; -end now what wonder that we, the people, should have some feelings of self-respect, and should bid her keep in her place.,..,' . t. - f--. ; ; -! - "".-,--: The Catholic population of this country is to the Protestant population as 1 to 12. Had . Rome this numerical ascendency, would she exhibit the same forbearance to wards the then Protestant minority, that is now extended to her ? ; We regard it as a remarkable and significant (act, indicating the true spirit of Protestantism, . that .with such a large numerical 'superiority." in its favor, and with the existence at the same time of so very deep and general a dislike to popery, there. should be manifest among our people so great a respect for law, for the personal rights of papists, and we may add, for it is the truth, so fixed a determina tion to proceed with the American move ment in a lawful, and tolerant way.- Let Catholics look, and wonder at American . and Protestant forbearance,' and shed no more crocodile teara. Let the church go out and "weep bitterly"; over , her betrayal oC Christ, and then may she. with more propriety elaim connection with Saint Pe ter. -E$ ' v - - . . Hav ing witnessed the most beneficial effects from the use of your Sarsaparllla, it gives me pleasure to send ran tha followinflr statement in rreard to mv son. In the spring ot 1848 he took a severe cold. snd after eight weeka of severe sutteting the die ease settled in his left leg snd foot, which soon swelled to the utmost. The swelling was lanced by his physician, and discharged most profusely: after that no less than eleven ulcere formed on the leg and foot at on? time. Wehad fivedifferent Phy aicians.but none relieved him much ; and the last winter found him so emaciated and low that he was unable to leave hla I ed, suffering the most excrucia ting pain. During this time the bone had become so much sfiected that piece after piece came out, of which he has now more than twenty-five preserved In a bottle, varying from one half to one and a half inches in length. We had given up all hopes of his recovery, butat this time we were induced to try your Sarsaparilla, and with its use his health snd a ppetiie began immediately to Improve, and so rap id was the change thatles than a dozen bottles ef fected a perfect cure. AndTLAIN AND FANCY PRINTIN ry description, done in the. neatest i. ner, and on the most reasonable terms. Wilmington. August 17, 1854. MISCELLANY. REV. T. P. HUNT. We have beard many good things that emanated from the keen wit of thia Rev. gentleman, but the last one threw us dowr entirely. A man recently passing Mr. Hunt, was accompanied by a Email, dog; and the Tittle-scoundrel took a sudden fan cy to stick his teeth in the old gentleman's legs.; This physical manifestation not pro ving satisfactory to the clerical victim, he' determined to victimize the dog in turn, and' drawing the bg end of his cane, soon ad ded another subject to the dog tombs. Thus began the dramatic tragi-comedy. Stranger" Why did you kill my dog V Hunt M Because he was going to bite me." " Stranger " Why didn't you use the small end of your stick you could have frightened him and not killed him ? Hunt (excited) u Why didn't your dog: come at me tail first, then ATTENTION THE COURT. A friend of ours has just been mention' tng that on one occasion he was address ing "the court," . at the bar of one of the Middle States, upon the subjuct of great moment to his client, when his attention was arrested by a singular circumstance. He observed that when he dwelt upon the particular point of bis argument, which bo wished especially to enforce, "the ' court's head went down behind his elevated desk, and presently rose again.- Changing his position slightly, he saw the mystery of this singular occurrence; and when, soon after, it was repeated, he paused in hi re marks, and said "When 'the court' has finished eating its watermelon, I shall proceed with my argu ment, not without the hope of beiog at least par.ially heard !" FOUR AGAINST ONE, The following argument against trarr substamiation, is taken from the New York Churchman : t "The doctrine clearly confutes Itself. A denies the doctrine of transubstantiation. B., a papist, declares it is revealed in Scrip ture. A. denies it B. quotes the passage, This is my body. A. denies that there is such a passage. B. produces it, and tells A. that he can see it with his 'own eyes. A. retorts that on B's own principles, the sense of sight is not to be trusted; and just ly charges B. with being utterly unreason able; for, if four senses are not to be trus ted, as proving bread to be bread ; surely one is not as proving words to be words." GOING BACK. The N. Yorlr Express states that afmost every packet ship that has left New York for Liverpool of late has taken quite a large number of passengers, said to be mai&ly emigrants going back home. The saroo is said to be the case with other ports. The City of Manchester, from Philadelphia, the other day, took thirty in the cabin and one -hundred and fifty in the steerage, ami the packet ship Tonawanda, on the same day, sailed from the same port with two Lun dred and four steerage passengers. NEVER LOST. - An Englishman travelling: through tha 4 county of Kilkenny, eame to a ford and hi- H red a boat to take Lin across. The water being more agitated than v agreeable to him, he asked tha boatman if anyone Was ever lost in the passage, aci was answered by Terence aa follows : tt Never, never. My-brother was drowneJ here last week, but we found him again Bet tsny. ,
