MISCELLANY.
THE PROMISSORY NOTE.
A Uerman LSnron, Von V ,at pres
ent residing at Parts, was some tow years
since living in baronial ease ; at his Castle
of F , situated in a somewhat secluded
but romantic district of his native land.
On the score of worldly possessions, fortune,
had smiled most favorably on the herb of
our narrative- but, by way of amend, na
tuie had been proporuonably inauspicious
ns regarded his personal appearance, and
the adornments of the outward man. in
sober truth, the Baron Von " D was
about the ugliest man 'hat Germany has
produced for the last century and a half at
the least; so ungainly, indeed, was his ap
pearance, that, w;th a full consciousness of
his inferiority irilhis respect, he lived in a
manner secluded from society, to mix in
. which his rank and station otherwise folly
, entitled htm. Like his storied,, prototype,
however, Xrinee Ricquet with-the-Tufi, our-
. baron's rude exterior was but the husk that
covered a lender heart, sensitively alive to
. the bewitching influence of the fairer sex.
In plain English, the Baron Von; D
ft II over head and ears in'Ibve a predica
ment from which, even the potentates of
this our nether world, to say njthing of
Teutonic barons, are occasionally not ex
empt. A young and beautiful girl, the
daughter of a gentleman of goodly pedi
gree, but of slender fortune, living "in his
immediate neighborhood, was the object of
his adoration the cynooure of his reveries.
Thenceforth his mind, bis every .thought,
became fixed, absorbed as it were, equal
ly divided, between her slyph-like image
and hia beloved meerschaum : nor is this,
. by the way, by any means a disparaging
compliment to ine lany, wnen speaKing oi
a German lover. Having by a mighty
effort of resolution, such as the tender pas
sion can alone inspire, surmounted the bash
ful diffidence to which we have before a I
luded, the barort made his proposals in form,
-which, on the part of the parents of the
young lady, were most favorably and glad
'ly received. With the lady herself, how
ever, matters fell out far Ies3 prosperously;
a cold reception to bis proposal, and a chil
ling demeanor, afforded but too certain an
indication that his suit was disagreeably
and bis attentions .irksome Still haunted
by the painful consciousness of his person
al defects, the baron was very naturally
led to attribute his failure to that cause.
A far different motive, however, lurked at
the bottom of the young lad,s conduct .-
' A cousin (oh! these cousins!) had long been,
in'secret, the favored suitor; but the nar
rowness of whose prospects in life bad hith
erto precluded all hope of his wishes meet
ing with the parental sanction.
The Baron Von D -was one evening
chair, in the spacious hall of his ancestral
dwell ntr, in one of the wide recesses of the
huere crothic chimney, before the dull em
bers of a wood fire, smouldering, like his
owu illstarred love, in a shapeless heap, in
sole'companionship with his beloved and
inseparable meerschaum, his' second pas
sion musing in sad and melancholy reve-
ry on ureunatable composition and tnougnt
iess yanity of the femala heart, when half
mentally and half audibly he ejaculated
his willingness to sacrifice the better por
tion of his fortune in exchange, if that were
possible, for the boon of personal attraction
and exterior endowment. Suddenly, in the
xlim twilight, and through the dense volu
mes of smoke, curling in rapid succession
from the volcano ef his pipebowl, he per
ceived a tall and singularly accoutred fig
ure standing erect beside him, as though
it had issued from one of the huge . gothic
"mouldings. .Somewhat, startled at the ap
pearance of the unexpected visiter, he was
about to call for his attendants, when the
stranger, with a polite bow, and irt a, voice
which, although, of peculiar tone, - yet be
tokened no hostile purpose, thus addressed
hira : '
lMy visit, Herr Baron, is perhaps some
what unceremonious; but I come with a
friendly intent. I am well aware of the
subject of your ptesent thoughts : are yoa
willing to abide by them ' "'
'My present thoughts I why I who in'the
devil's name - -v
Hush? mildly interrupted the visiter;
the least eaid on that head perhaps the
belter. But I have no time for explanation.
If you are sincere in your purpose, I have
the power of gratifying your wishes. Of
that you may rest perfectly assured. Only
it is requisite that you should sign this lit
tie document, (producing a slip of, paper.
'A document! and what sort of docu
ment V cried the bewildered baron
A mere trifle.' responded his interlocu
tor: 'merely a memorandum of our lmle
transaction. I am a man of ftw words.
So, iTyon are in earnest, let us proceed to
business. 1 To every person but yourself
you will henceforth appear a perfectly al
tered man. Your suit will be accepted
you know in what quarter. Are you con
tent ? Answer, on the instant, or the oppor
nuy will be lost to you for ever lM
The baron, as we may well imagine.
felt some little misgiving. But the tone
the manner, the whole demeanor of the
etranser was imposing. That he possess
ed the power of diving into the most hid
den thoughts of the human mind was clear
from the short colloquy that had just taken
place. Why should he not possess the
power lie mentioned? Beside, the oppor
tunity might never occur again. In t
word, what, between surprise and bewi!
dennent at the siransre and, sudden occur
rence the brightness ot the prospect thus
unexpectedly opened before him, and last,
certainly not least, a no inconsiderable bias
toward superstitions credulity, he a raxed
his name to the proffered document.
Whereupon the stranger, with another, po
lite bow. disappeared in one of the dark
recesses of the hall ..
The baron, recovering in. some degree
from his dream, for such he at hrst ima
gined it-to be, albeit he, on the other hand,
felt perfectly satisfied of his beinjr broad
awake, after musing for a few moments on
his late adventure, resolved to put the facf
of his metamorphosis to an immediate test.
He rang for his attendants. I he sum
mons was obeyed, and the servants made
their appearance. Irt the evident surprise
depicted on.their countenances, he read an
assurance; of some remarkable change
having really taken place in his outward
form. He" consulted his looking-glass, but
to his own eye no alteration whatever seem
ed la have. supervened. ' ....ibis be iecolleci
ed. was ia strict accordance with the
stmnffcr's undertaking.
The following day the baron lost no time
tn still turtner assuring ramsea tt tne re
ality of the. auspicious change in his ap
pearance : on some trifling pretext, he sum
moned together his whole household, and
presented himself among them. This time
there was no room left for doubt; on the
matter, b tarn whisperings and other in
dications of surprise, one or two of the
more confidentially employed among them.
ventured on a respectful congratulation to
their master on the manifest and surprising
improvement that bad so suddenly taken
place in his person. Full of the most pleas-J
ing anticipations, and elate with hope, be
ordered his equipage, ana paid a morning
visit at the house of bis hitherto obdurate
love. ' jHerp, jtoo, as though rby magic, he
found that a most" propitious change had
taken place. His reception by. the fair one
was a favorable as it had previously been
discouraging. Ia short, the happy day of
union was arranged, and nothing now
seemed wanting to his felicity;
The evening preceding his edting-day"
found the Baron Von D -seated, as be-
fore." in hi antique chair, "in the self-same
corner of the huge gothic chimney-piece,
and whiffing the perfume of his faithful
meerschaum. But how different' the tone
of his thoughts and the subject of his med
itations. All was now alluring hope and
bland anticipation. Imagine, however,his
surprise, w-hen, feeling a hasly lap on his
shoulder, he turned round and behind his
quondam mysterious visiter at his elbow.
- " There was one little circumstance i for
got to, meution at our last interview," said
the stranger your wish as to a favora
ble change in appearance has, you know,
been gratified, and your suit has been suc
cessful " Should you, however, persist m
espousing the object of your attention, you
will fall a lifeless corpse on the very steps
of the altar. Be careful, therefore. The
young lady ia secretly espoused to her
cousin F Take my advice : renounce
in public all claim to the hand of the lady,
and. recommend her parents to sanction her
union with her cousin. Mark me! it is
the only course you have left I"
4 The poor baron would fain have remon
strated with his visiter; but he had disap
peared as before. At first he was tempted
to hazard thd issud;'but reflecting that as
one part of the drama, bad already come
to pass, the denouement might possibly
follow with equal certainty, he wisely re
solved on following the stranger's advice,
however unpalatable ; and this resolution
be carried into effect the next day.
Dusgusted with the scene of his disap
pointment, the Baron Von D having
arranged his affairs in Germany, shortly
afterward retired to Paris, arid i.i the gay
eties of the capital had nearly lost sight of
his adventure, when lately, to his surprise,
he received a legal summons to pay 100,s
000 francs and three years' interest, on a
promissory note. In vain the baron protest
ed that in the" whole course of his life he
had never affixed his name trj any security
of the kirrd. The note was produced 'with
his genuine signature attached. It was
then only that his former adventure recur
red to bis recollection, and that the whole
mystery began gradually te unfold itself.
A trick, aj the reader may by this time
well imagine, had been dexterously plaved
off on the baron's credulity, by bribing the
household, and by preconcerted arrange
ment with ihe young lady. "The main in
cidents of the plot were easily contrived,
credulity and a pre-disposition for the mar
vellous did the rest.
The foregoing narrative, however ro
mantic and improbable it may appear, is
nevertheless, but the succinct outline of an
actual occurrence, the particulars of which
are shortly about to engage the attention of
the legal tribunals in ..France. The ir-
:nm stances recall to mind some of 'the most
picturesque legenas oj necromancy
and
diablerie of the middle ages.
