' '' " , The Jo r nal, in reply to our article of Satur day, relative to the election of Mr. Sudell, Las the follow in : . .''' "We say that the Democratic party is predomi nant in all great contests at the South, and the Commercial fails to show a single State election that has ione against the Democrats in any State carried by Pierce and King ia the Presidential election." - . - The Editor has not forgotten, we sec, the mode of mystification and manner of ".dodging,"" ia which he is so expert, as well as bis Democratic coadjutors. yi We have not shown " a. single State , election (Sonth) that has gone against the 'Democratic party, iu any Statu carried by Pierce aed King." Why t Because there has been no contest in any of the Southern States, in which the parties brought into view by the Journal have been en gaged in conflict. The " Utile divisions" in the Democratic ranks were attributed, by the Journal, to the Know-No-things, or the American Organization. We show ed that the divisions were rry large, in some of t'.ie most prominent States of the Union and now we are required to show the points of some vic tory over the " indomitables," before any battle has been fought on the ground or under the in fluence at issue!! "... ' When we hear of the result of it contest such, as the Journal has clouded in its description, by? old party" clap-traps when we lew of the rrsull of the coming election in Virginia we will faithfully report to our readers., if the nefarious deniapsjueism that has disgraced our county and dishonored the intelligence of the age, known by the marks of ' Polk, Texas and Oregon," " Fifty four forty or fight," " the rich Irish brogue" and innumerable stripes of tbjs character; whether the mean appeals to the mflnence of corrupt and ignorant foreigners for support; whether the shameful truckling to a foreign clerical power, that tramples on the rights of man, as regards his conscience, his liberty and his property, whenever and wherever it i in the ascendant, and other in numerable items of a like character embodying the Democratic principle, according to the views of our neighbor, we say we will faithfully report to our readers the triumph of the party of which Le is one of the orgacs. We will then report that our illustrious sister, the " mother of Presidents," has cast her vote under the Influence of the " mother of Harlots,'' and other foreign powers, hostile to the rights of man and inimical to the American, heart. SUFFOCATION BY COAL OAS. The Philadelphia Ledger gives a more particn lar account of the recent remarkable case of suf focation at the city prison : "Early yesterday morning, tho keepers of the prison were alarmed by the discovery that a large nnreber of the prisoners in the untried depart ment were insensible from the effects of eosf gas, ihst had in some way found its way into the cells. A hasty examination of all the cells showed that nearly all the occupants in the first, second and third corridors were more or less affected. Those in the cells nearest the centre of the wing were found to be co far gone, that tbeir cases were at first deemed hopeless. They were hastily remov ed to the arch way near the front gate, which was, for the time, converted iuto a temporary hospital, f I. n mnjat .ftiniinna m. is . m m mr4lX to restore tbe sufferers to consciousness. In only one instance were the efforts mado to resuscitate unavailing, and life was extinct in that case be fore he was removed from the cell. H" bull .from "the FL-imiriian gate," was the greatest bull that ever; issued out of Rome j his message on tbe promulgation of the immaculate conception, read in the Romish chapels, if Jess insulting is still more laughable. WLmin is now in Rome, we hear, engaged in revising the Holy Iudex that U, branding the works of genius which a hundred millions of persons, more or less intelligent; are not to read. In the pauses of his work be baa foam! time to address a message to bis children I in England on the blessedness of that doctrine which the crowned harlot of Madrid ia the first woman in Europe to applaud ! We bave said the cardinal is not wise. We ask any of our readers even our catholic readers whether this is a time to impose new doctrines on tbe faithful 1 Is Italy so fond of pope and cardinals' as to desire more of them ? Ask Mazzini for Rome, Guevazzi for Florence, Gladstone for Naples, Victor Emanuel for Turin. Is England so enamoured of tbe name of Nicolas Wiseman that U will n joice to bear it once again 1 The faitbful are told by Cardinal Wiseman that this dogma "Bas been that of the catholic church from the beginning." How then about the saints who hare refused,' refuted, and abused the dogma? How about the infallible popes who supported their views 1 Are these all here tics 1 Is St. Bernard a heretic 1 If he were a here tic on earth, be most now be a lost soul in bell. That follows from another dogma of tbe infallia Ule church. - But sco where this belief would lead. The faithful have been praying to a devil for four hundred years. Nor bas this been mere ly individual aberration. Bernard was canonixed by the infallible church. St. Bernard was placed ia its accepted calendar of saints whose woiks on earth weie good for percept and example. There fore, if ignorant people bave prayed to a lost sonl, they have done so at the instigation of their church. .Who ia responsible for their error 1 The infallible church ?
