To of fer it as such would be a gross insult to the members of the State Society, and to the in telligence and common sense of the public .generally and yet it comes out in that im posing form, placing the Jour signers in the liilseand unenviable attitude of usurping au thorny, and undertaking to do what nettner . J. Li. ANECDOTE OP MR JAY, Mr, Jay had become aware of a growing evil among his brethren, arising from a cause with, which he being familliar, determined upon rebuking and denouncing. When in the .midst of his discourse, he said : ' My young brother, it is to be regretted that many enter Ihe ministry after they have been educated, to whose services the church has a claim ; they look round" and select a lady for their wife, but they are careful she possesses a fortune. After a time they begin to get weary in well doing. They take cold, it results in a cough, they are bo weak that they cannot attend to the duties of their of fice. They resign, and live upon their wife's fortune. I know Jive cases of this kind ; -aay it never be your lot.' - Duqng the delivery of this keen rebuke, -there wai a young minister, or rather an ex minister, who did not seem very comfortable. Alter the service was closed, the merits of the discourse were canvassed, and the gene ral opinion was that it was only such a one as conld be delivered by Mr. Jay. ,Said one to an ex-pastor: , How did you like Mr. Jay ? it was quite a treat wasn't it V f Well, I liked him very well,' but I think Jie was rather personal.' , - f Personal, eh, how so?' Why, you must have " noticed his refer ence to ministers out of health, resigning.' : ' 'Yes, yes. he was a little close there,; I must admit.' - I shall speak to hint about it.' said the delicate fisiidious ex-minister. He sought the vestry, and found Mr. Jay Ahere. He congmtuated him on his health, stnd discourse, bu. hinted that he was per sonal in his remarks, and would like to know jf he referred to htm. 1 'Personal, said the patriarch, 'personal eh, in what part of the discourse ?' - 'When you were speaking about ministers resigning.' - ... 1 'Oh.' said Mr". Jay, 'I eee, yes; have you resigned V r . Ye sir' ' ' 'Did you -marry a rich wife?' 'Yes, sir. . :- 4 Did you have a cough and become disa folrtf for service V ' - Yes, sir.' " 'i Ah, my friend, your is the sixth case then. This young man reaped the reward of his folly,' and retired confused and ashamed from the presence of Mr. Jay The Wesleyan. A CAPITAL DEFINITION. The Boston (Mass.) Post gives the follow ing definition of the term - able lawyer" one who is able to "get a living by his profes sion, and does not resort to lobbying contracts or jobbing. ' .
