MISCELLANY.
V From Ike J'ete York Express.
Wanted I A New Declaration of Indepen-
, deuce.
It is high time, we respectfully sub-
mit,-jt is high time we had another
Declaration of Independence, for the
crowned heads of Europe, and such of
they; subjects as we are daily coming iu
toniaa wun. seem rapiuiy iorgetttug
lh;it the United States claim to be their
owfi owners. -; Say what we may to the
contrary, our nationality is last losing its
identity. New York, iu many essential
respects, it 3 a melancholy fact, is much
more of a ioieign than an American ci
ty. Foreigners, banded together in mil
itary organizations, waveaheir green
and red flags over our beads, while for
eign "priests, and foreign politicians, ow
ing allegiance to foreign potentates, claim
. territorial jurisdiction over the soil under
our feet. The foreign emissaries of for
eign governments, open recruiting of
ces before our very eyes; to enlist troops
for a foreign war. Our Alms , Houses
are filled with foreigners. The honest,
hard working American mechanic and
laborer, who would rather rot, than rob
to get into the Penitentiary, just for the
sake of being fed and lodged there who
would die rather than go to the Alms
House has to pay rumously high rent
to his landlord, because his landlord is
largely taxed tosupport the standing ar
mies of stalwart mendicants, with which
the bankrupt, corrupt; and dishonorable
governments ot the old world are con
stantly invading us.
These, foreigners not only govern, or
assume to govern us, on our own soil,
but they impose grievous contributions
upon our exchequer billet their beg
gars upon us and to all intents and
purposes, look upon us, and treat us pre
cisely, as if the United States of Ameri
ca were but some petty province, with
a people so used to impositions and in
sults, that resistance has sunk into sub
mission, and remonstrance into acquies
cence. JLet those timid souls, therefore,
- who quake and quiver at what they af
fect to think the too rapid and dange
rous progress of "Americanism" through
out the land, take heart. Their fears,
so far, are groundless." The foreigners,
as yet, have the best of us, and are like
ly to keep . the ascendancy, for a long
while to come.
America docs not -rule America just
yet. Not only are we, in a great part,
ruled by the subjects of the Queen of
Great Britain, but the King of Sardinia
volunteers what he can, to govern us.
" He sends his "paupers here by the ship
"load, and being here but a short while,
they are used by cunning politicians as
good material to oppose " Americanism"
-and American principles. To get these
paupers off his hands, and compel us
Americans to work to support them, we
have been told that they were not beg
gars, but political exiles.
Knowing the generous sympathies
the American people have ever enter-
, taiued for exiles of that class, for men
who have from time to time been expa
triated from their native land, perchance
for a too "often and evident attachment
to liberal principles, these unprincipled
governments of continental Europe, pre-
" sume to pawn off upon us the sick, the
lame, the halt, the blind, and the idiotic
even, thinking we are disposed to put
up with such shameful . insults forever.
The Emperor Napoleon helps tortile,.
..-and helps to tax us, through the same
channel of beggar immigration. - So do
the petty princes of most of the German
States. And so does Switzerland.
Look, for example, at the record in this
very day's ' paper, and say whether it is
not time high - time that something
be done to resist trfts filthy flood of for
ignism, which, under the special su
pervisioiv of the despots of Europe,
large and small,. is rushing and rolling
in upon us, threatening in time to sap
" and sweep away whatever of native
sentiment, or native feeling, native prin
ciple, is still left uncontaminated among
US.
Now, then, how long are we to put
up with this state of things ? How long
are the petitions of the people to be laid
on the table, or contemptuously flung
under it, on the pretext that the Amer
icans are engaged in a crusade against
Foreigners 1 How long is the senseless
cry of " Hindoo ? to silence the righteous
'demands of a too uncomplaining and
.long suffering people 7 Are the " For
eigners " to have nothing? Is Europe
to have a general jail delivery, . at our
expense, without granting us the poor
privilege of a protest 1 . Are we to have
the hospitals and alms-houses of Italy,
Germany and Switzerland, emptied at
our doors, and, remonstrating, be told
that the 44 Know Nothings " must be put
down ? If so, gentlemen of the Foreign
Party, let us have an understanding at
once,--and we are ready for the issue.
DREADFUL DEATH.
On Thursday morning last Mrs. Rodgers,
who resides in the 17th ward, near the Cath
olic church cent her bod Milton, a small boy,
to the bakery after a loaf of bread. On the
way the boy was. bitten by a dog. Milton
ran home and dressed the wound he bad received.-
On Friday n:ght about two .o'clock
the mother waa awakened by the boy tear
ing the bed clothes and scratching his face.
The mother endeavored to pacify him, but
the boy groaned the harder and became
' more and more furious. A light was struck,
whi n the mother discovered her boy frothing
and foam in at the mouth. In these spasms
he died about three o'clock. His leg, after
death, was found to be black from bis hip
down, apd very much swollen. 'Cin. Gax.

Ottoman Empire takes its name. Fifty men
are the usual guard at this door. We were
at once in' the midst of a vast courtyard, (ilia
whole palace grounds are three milts in cit
cnit,) and passing across it we were conduct'
ed into ihe palace. A flight of euira brought
us to the audience-chamber, a wide apart
ment, carpetled and sorroundi-d with si rirh
divan. The throne-room was furnished with
chairs nnd sofas, showing a conformity to
Western customs.
Another nnd another chamber, nnd wo en
tered the Sultan's bath luxuriously fitted
up. but without some tf the contrivances lor
comlort which poorer people enjoy. A brass
bar across a door we were pausing told ns,
or at least the guides inlbimed us. that thi
was the entrance to the harem. No proliirin
foot may cross that threshold. No man but
the husband is allowed to enter ihe Turk'
apartments for his wives. But along gallery
opening near waa now entered, hung un onu
side with engravings, chiefly of Napoleon's
battles; and on the other eide a row of win
dows looked out on the court. This is tho
hall in which the hundred and fifty wives of
the Sultan ure daily assembled for the
amusement of their common lord. Here
each one of them may exert Iter unto win
his favor; and it ia said that he drops hia
handkerchief at the feet of the one who has
been the most successful.
Through this hall we were led along ta
the private armory of ihe Sultan, and whiles
admiring the pistols, sword., dirkn. yataghan,
cirnelers sabres, etc., of elegant workman
ships, adorned with gold nnd prccioua Hone?,
my .atlenlion was railed to an adjoining
apartment, the Sultan's bedchamber. Tho
janizaries with bayoneted guns flood be lore
the open door, and permitted me to lock in,
but not enter. It whs reported among the
company in the other room that gentlemen
were not allowed to go in; and ihe indies;
presuming on their privilege, hastened to
step in, but the crowed guiw ol the guards
brought th'em to u sudden halt on the thresh
old. We could see the magnificent, couch
and its gold and crimson damask canopy, and
the sumptuous furniture of the chamber,
where the most uneasy man in the Turkish
empire has o'ipii sought in vain for sleep,
that comes u n wooed lo him who earns it
with the sweat of his brow, and docs not
wear a crown.
In the gardens of (he palace, nnd near ihe
water's edge, are many beautiful bul small
cottages, which from time to time have been
erected at the desire of one or another of ihe
Stilton's favorite wives. Kilted up according;
to Ihe taste of each fair inmate, we could see
in the low windows that open on the walks
that Ihey were very eh'gant and very orien
tal. The Sultan has the range of them till,
as cages in which hi pet birds aie confined.
And then we gathered some flower, lor in
the last of December '.he roues were in full
bloom in the open air, und every thing ivas
fresh and green as May. Underneath the
palace was the kitchen, and fires going ns il
an army were io be led Irom the great ranges
and furnaces on which the. dinner was even
now cooking. Some of the pastry was serv

we did eat it in the kitchen.

the Sultan does not reside in the Seraglio;
he is at one ofhis many palaces along the
Bosphorus, and the cooking now iu process
was merely for the retainers of ihe palace.
His future residence will be iu ihe marble
palace on the Bosphorus.
A thousand horses stand in the royal sta
bles, which we passed on our way out ; nnd
the harness and trappings, covered with jew
elry, arc displayed in a room over the stall-'.
It required an hour lo look through the old
armory, containing one of the rarest and
richest collections of helmets, graces. brca6t
plates in form of stars, guns ol strange pat
terns, in uae belbre locks were invented, nnd
implimcnta of war now ol solete, but terribly
effective in their day, and very curious now.
The stacks ofarma all ready for use were
fast diminishing hy the daily demand for the
war; and probably come of the poor fellows
that came on ihe teamer with we were by
this time equipped from this armory and
marching to ihe field.
In a gallery was a collection of the fa

splendid Damascus blade of Mohammed II.
Here, too, are the keys of all ihe cities of

THE SWEARER REBUKED.
Dr. Scudder, on fiis return from his
mission in India, after a long absence,
was standing on the deck ot a steamer,
with his son, a youth,' when he heard a
gentleman using loud and profarc lan
guage. " See friend," said the doctor,
accosting the swearer, this boy my
son was born and brought up in a hea
then country, and a land of Pagan idol
atry ; butjn ali bis life he never heard
a man blaspheme his Maker until now."
The man colored, blundered out a sort
of an apology and moved away, looking
not a little ashamed of himself. II there
is any custom more silly than dueling it
is that of swearing.
