From the Asstal Report for 1855. , In presenting' a new annual report of col- ortage in these Slates to the friends of the "cause throughout the .Union, one great fact will commaad attention the stead j pro gression of the work. ' i - In Virginia alone, the combined labors of the agents and colporteurs-would have re quired twenty-five jeara incessant applica tion for one rnan to perform. Sales wee rnade to the value of f 9,955 86 ; grants of books and, tracts, 82,599 53, or 15,534 vol umes at 16 1-3 cents each ; meetings held, 1,426; 1,665 families vere found destitute of religious books except the Bible, and 778 destitute of the Bible ; 1,179 families habit ually neglect church ; 14,391 families were prajed with, and 27,834 were visited ; to tal expenses of the work, omitting those of the general agents, $8,855 10 ; donations in full from Virginia, $7,066 44. - Twelve years of labor for one man were performed in North Carolina. Sales to the value of $5,744 67 ; grants, ' $1,325 26; 740 meetings were held ; 2,288 families had no religious books but the Bible, and 1,001 families were destitute of the Bible ; 1,542 families vere ibund that neglected evangelical preaching; 10,375 families were converted or prayed with, and 1 8,555 were visited. Total expense of the work, $ 3.348 29; donations received to aid the work, $1, 680 73. But six months of the year were report ed to me in South Carolina. Time of ser vice, two years ; sales, $849 65; grants, 8122 55 ; 50 meetings were held ; 71 fami lies were found destitute of religious books except the Bible, and 83 destitute of the Bible; 192 families neglecting church; families prayed with, 1,330 ; whole num ber visited, 386; expenses of the work, 563 60; donations received, $5,08t 15. The expenses of the Colporteur Cotrvea-4 Hon,: which were considerable, are not charged to S. Carolina, but to the States in which the men resided. The sum total in these States is as fol lows : 40 years of labor accomplished by 89 men ; volumes circulated by sale, 66, 161 value, 16,540 19 ; by grant, 24,284 volumes value, 4,049 34 ; meetings held, 2,216 ; families destitute of all religious , books butf the Bible, 4,029 ; destitute of the Bible, 1,862 ; 2,913 families, according to their own statement, neglect preaching ; -49,675 families were visited, many of them repeatedly, and 26,096 of them were pray ed with. Donations in full, $13,833 32. From the tenor of the colporteur reports it is inferred that God's blessing has attended the labors of those, his humble servants, in a remarkable manner. In various portioos of this vast field churches have been strength ened, common schools and Sabbath schools have greatly increased in numbers and effi ciency, and many precious eoula have passed from nature's darkness into spiritual light. There has also been a large incrense of friends to the cause. Liberal minded Chris tians of all denominations have cheerfully co-pperated in it. They appreciate the ex tent of the ground occupied and its urgent call for aid irom all quarters, and from all men who love our common Lord. , There is now a larger band of experi enced, well trained men engaged in this work than the Society ever had in these States before,, and the year commences . under . most encouraging auspices. " The friends of the cause are entreated to aid it by their prayers and contributions, that its laborers may press forward with the glad tidings of salvation to the' poor and desti tute, in the highways and hedges of these . States. " , . . . v.- .The Society has the continued service of Rev. S. II. Slack, and Rev. M. T. Sum ner, as Agents in Virginia, and W. J. W. Crowder, in North Carolina. They -are all efficient agents, and are cordially re commended to the public. South Carolina was recently transferred to the supervision of E. L. Kerrison, Esq., of Charleston, who has accepted a com mission, and who will devote all his time to the work gratuitously, ! His piety and business habits will, with God's blessing, insure success. J. CROSS. Superintendent of Colportage. ' Richmond March I, 1855. ' ; WHAT SOME FOLKS EAT. A keeper of a branch in the Fulton Mar , ket, New York, had a hearing before a Justice on the charge of selling "plated veal." . The testimony showed what plated veal is. A witness said r . . ' . . ' " The Boston Bee of the 11th instant says: ;4An errand boy, aboat twelve years of age, was sent to the United States Hotel with a coat from Harlow's, 58 Washington street, on Monday evening, and on the way he was met by a fellow who claimed toe coat, and as the lad was not willing to give it up, the tellow caught hold ol bim and tore the wrapper nearly all off-the bundle, but still the lad held on. .The boy then asked the man if his name was Hudgins. -Yes." 6aid he, "that's my name."
