WILMINGTON, N. C., TUESDAY MORNING, MAY 1, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER 1123 VOLUME X- NUMBER 21. POETRY. GOING AHEAD. BT JOHN G. WHITTIEB. i hear the far off voyager's horn, I see the Yankee's trial His foot on every mountain pass, On every stream his saiL lie's whistling round St. Mary's Falls, Upon his loaded train; lie's leaving on the Pictured Rocks His fresh tobacco stain. I hear the mattock in the mines, The axe stroke in the dell, The clamor from the Indian Lodge, The Jesuit's chapel bell! V . I see the swarthy trapper come From Mississippi's springs : Ami war chiefs with thair painted brows, And crests of eagle whings. Behind the squaw's light birch canoe, The steamer smokes and raves; And city lots are staked for sale Above old Indian graves. J3y forest lake and water-fall, I see the pedlar's show ; The mighty mingling with the mean, The lofty with the low. I hear the tread of pioneers Of nations yet to be : The fist low wash of waves where soon Shall roll a human seal The rudiments of empire here, Are plastic yet and warm : The chaos of a mighty world Is rounding into form ! Each rude and jostling fragment soon Its fitting place shall find The raw material for a state, Its muscles and its mind ! A westering still the star which leads The new world in its train, lias tipp'd with fire the icy spears Of many a mountain chain. The snowy copes of Oregon Are kindled on its way. And California's golden sands Gleam brighter to its ray ! V MISCELLANY. THE BUSKING OF THE AMERICAN TIIE- AIRE. The New Orleans Picayune of April ' 20, says : About 2 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in the American theatre, on the corner of Poydras and St. Francis streets, which was entirely destroyed. The origin of the fire is enveloped in mystery. There had been a performance the previous night by the German company; but whether some light had been carelessly left burning, which communicated with scenery or some other combustible material, or whether it was the work of an incendiary, has not and probably never will be ascertained. While the fire was raging, the rear wall, to- , 'wards Camp street, fell with a sudden crash, burying a German actor, named Zeitz, un der the ruins. He was extricated as soon as possible and taken to the First District I guard-house, where he died in a few min utes. His body was awfully mangled. This is the only accident we heard of, al though several persons made narrow es capes. The theatre was owned by Mr. .James Collis, of New York, and the estate of Morgan, a3 far as we could learn was " "not insured, with the exception, perhaps, of ... a very small sum. ' The site orthis theatre was one of the best in the city, but from its construction or other causes, it was nev er well patronized. GEN. WASHINGTON'S OPINION. ' These letters mav be fonnd in the 11th volume of Spark's -Publication of the Washington papers. "We copy the essential portions of said letters, as fol lows: . . Mt. Vernon, Jan. 20, 1790. ; To J. Q.. Adams, American Minister at Berlin. -' " Sir, You know, my good sir, that it is not the policy of this gov ernment to employ foreigners when it can bo well avoided, either in the civil , or military walks of life. - There is a species of self importance in all foreign officers, that cannot be gratified without doing injus tice to meritorious characters among our own countrymen, who conceive, and justly, where there is no great prepon derance of experience or merit that they are entitled to all the offices in the gift of their government. - . .' I am, &c, " - i G. WASHINGTON." :Same date, to a foreigner applying for office. ' " Dear Sir It does not ac cord with -the policy of this government to bestow offices, civil or military, upon foreigners, to the exclusion of our own citizens. Yours, fcc, G. WASHINGTON." ROBBED. .. - .. A Mr. Gardner was robbed in " coming out of St James' Church,-, in Jay street, Brooklyn, on Sunday morning, of a gold watch.
