BT AUGUSTA MOORE. Mrs. Lean-Ier Pcttigrew was a. woman rjf fashion. She kept men servants, as well as women servants Her having' been bora in this democratic land was a source of Constant regret to her she longed for the titles and pomp of monarchical realms. She was learned in the mysteries of Eu ropean servant training:, and tlici her verj bf st to train hers according to her know ledge. She had ta her service several fore igners. The servility of these gratified her grille. At length her lower-hall-gentry be gan to feel the workings of American free and equal doctrines, . and the foreigners showed siira -of some iodependeucejfl thousht and action. Mrs. Pettigrew waJ not slow to detect the dangej, nor back ward in striving to nip it in the bud. 'Carline,' said she to a "German cham bermaid, who passing through the dining room, dressed for a walk, 'where did you get that parasol?' 'I bought it, ma'am.' replied the girl, with a slightly perceptible rising of tiie end of liter saucy nose. 'And who gave you reave to purchase a parasol, or wear a white pocket-handker- chief? Yqu know perfectly well that such things are not allowed myour country.' li am not in Germany now, ma'am; I'm -in America, ami can carry my wn parasol as well as you And, ma'am, I wish you'll please to look for another cham bermaid this place don't suit.' And Carline sallied out at the door. Her mktreSs was thunder-struck. She had not looked lor such a finale to this scene. I As she stood in silent astonishment at the independence of her -chambermaid, a French waiter entered the room: f A glance at his upper lip confirmed a suspicion which, for several days, had been creeping into her mind. With a severe look and tone", she said to the servant: Marco, I do not consider it becoming for waiters to wear a moustache. I cannot al-"j low my servant to wear one.' . 'Tis a free country, martatn; a man here may -wear a moustache, if he choose.' 'I do not wish impudent replies from my servants, sir. Yoa can shave your upper lip, or quit my service this a.ernoon.' f , Several days after the trouble with her servants, madam's bosom friend'and devo ted imitator, Mrs. Apewell. called. I 'My dear,' said Mrs. Apewell, during the vcry intellectual and interesting conversa tion, which had, for several hours, an un interrupted flow ; 'my dear, I am absolute ly in distress for a new waiter. Our hist was so often intoxicated, and so bent upon stealing his master's clothing, that husband could endure it no longer; S3 this week Dickon received his marching orders. J I was extremely sorry that it was necessary to dismiss him, for the feilow was very handsome and graceful, as well as respect ful and attentive. I" never had a waiter who understood his place or duties so well. He seemed actually devoted to me and the children; and as for poor Fidele, he has sus tained an irreparable loss. 'Tis not 'ofien a waiter is willing to interest himseif in (he welfare of a pet. Ueally, I do regret the loss of Dickon. You should, have seen the grace with which he would kn&el to lace a gaiter, or to draw on or off a rubber. He is a great loss. f 'I've no doubt of it, my dear Mrs. Ape well; and.1 can fully sympathize with you. Our waiter was a perfect udept in his du ties, but his presumption, in persisting in wearing a moustache, was too much to en dure.' i 'I met him in the street, this very morn ing,' said Mrs. Apewell, and ihe moustache was gone. I had half a mind to engage him for myself, but considering his obsti nate disregard of your wishes, 1 refrained. I could not allow a servant to wear a moustache.' t I think we had better go together, find call at the intelligence office this morning. I must have another ehatabermaid, also. The girl I took in the place of Carline is a perfect donkey She don't know a flower ease from a water-pitcher, or a napkin from a pillow-slip; and yesterday, when J sent herdown with toy orders for, dinnr, men tioning, amjng other things, n fricassee and some cucumbers, she told the cook I wished her to prepare fried eels and chuck undf rs.' . Mrs. Apewell laughed as fc heartily as gentility would permit, at these words of her friend, and Mrs. Pettigrew then arose and prepared for a walk to the office. We will leave the ladies to suit themsel ves to new servants as speedily as they can, trusting that, as their, happiness Jies so much in servants and show, neither .show nor servants will be denied them, un less for their spiritual elevation. . j LIFE OF A NEWSPAPER. J BY ITSELF. ? My life is shortly told. My first, impres sion was the sensation of a tremendous squeeze which instantly awoke me into life and thought. I wai now spread out to the iight, and a glow of intelligence complete ly pervaded me. My ideas were at first new, multifarious and qprffused. Nations, politics, courts, wars, speeches, lighting, tales, merchandize, marriages, deaths-, dit ties, S-,"c. &c. made up my thoughts, which" were various and mixed, and I lay io a si lent state of wonder and amazement t I soon found that I was but one of a large family, that was ushered into the wertd at the same time, from tbe same prolific moth er. Our whole litter was laid in regular order in a pile my situation being ona oT-J the first born, was particularly oppressed, damp and uncomfortable. 1 had a rilent, intuitive, longing wish to gel into the worldx" which was at length gratified. Morning and night came and I was carefully folded and laid, Moses like, in a basker, by an ur chin who was called the carrier, and borne into the street. The said carrier 1 soon found was nn object of interest and desire. He was soon accosted'by an elderly look ing man, with threadbare rus'y "breeches: 'Have you spare paper this morning, ny boy V said tiglws! ring. 'No sir,, was the short reply, and lie tfuged on with us, mut tering 'not as you knows on, Old Gripe ; you are the same chap that promised me some coppers far a paper the other morning and haint paid me yet you are too stingy to take the paper, but wont get another from me, I guess.' My bcethren were now fast leaving me, being deposited at their proper destinations; at length nay turn cam, and I was tucked into the crevice ot a shop door.. The first "sample iof -the kind was not at all prepossessing. 1 had not beea long rn'my new situation, when a re luctantly early apprentice, swhftging a key on his hand, wistfully eyed me; ami cast ing a look about him feloniously seized and thrust me into his rocket. My rightful row0jhy Ytrfu ofadvaricejjny, being in sight, hailednariesTeoHhe pilferer, and with threats compelled him to relinquish his prize. He entered his shop, and I soon found that I was the first object of interest. After hastily drying me by the fire, in which progress I narrowly escaped conflagration, he ran over roe, and fixed- his eyes upon sales at auction,' advertisements, &c. 1 was then more "particularly xamined and dismissed with condemnation. 'Nothing but foreign news, Congress and cabinet love stones and accidents by flood and field; a newspaper should bs a commercial re port one side at least should be devoted to prices carrent1 vl was then pettishly thrown upon the counter but was sooii in reqirlsition.' A bare headed boy made" his appearance, with a 'please to !endMa your paper a few minutes, just to look at the ship news V The request was reluctantly granted, with something about the plague of paper borrow.iAg and a determination to stop it. I was soon borne to a neighboring house. The .good old woiha'n, whose hus band was at sea, eagerly sought the ship newSj but was disapirointed m the search. 'How negligent and careless these printers are,' said she, Hiot a word of intelligence of the Wind Bird; they print of Poland and poetry, and fill their papers with ad veriisememsand ttaatls all they care a bout.' Miss now took-her turn. She sought the stories, the poetry, and marriages, which in half an hour were atl devoured, with the 'wonder that they put anything else in the paper.' An elderly lady qow took me, who, adjusting her spectacles, surveyed me a little while, and declared m? a 'terri bly uninteresting paper: "hardly a-cblnmn of deaths, and not. more than. fifteen or twenty murders and accidents.' 1n this way 1 passed through all hands of the fam ily, and afrer being well ' soiled And some what torn, byvthe little ones, was sent home. For three whole-days i had no rest, but was continually borrowed and abused. At ihe end of this period, I was supplanted by a new face, and was then discarded and thrown aside like all other servants, when ihey have become useless. I was, howev er, again resuscitated, and employed as a wmpper to some merchandize, and sent into the country. There, again I became an object of interest, went the rounds of ihe neighborhood, and was a 'nine days' wonder.' 1 am now quietly hanging up in a shattered condition in a farmer's kitch. en, from which I have written this brief memoir. I have seen much of the world, and h.vve learned that mankind are unrea sonable and ungrateful, and that in a world of great variety of taste and wishes, it is impossible to please all. .
