o pi WILMINGTON, N. a, TUESDAY MORNING, JUNE 26, 1855, WHOLE NUMBER 1147 VOLUME X NUMBER 45. IE 5U MISCELLANY. SUICIDE OF A YOUNG I.ADY. A correspondent of the American Re publican Banner, a Pen'isylvania pa per, writing from Edinboro' Erie coun ty, Penn , May 28ih, says. Our quiet village and the adjoining neighborhood were yesterday (Sunday,) the 27th, thrown into the most intense excite ment, occasioned by the discovery of the body of a young female in an open field four mik's from'this-place. The scene which was. presented on the discovery of the tyxiy was a mel ancholy on-:. The Thursday previous h' ing the iliy bhe was first missed. The tacts t t'.ie case, as near as we could get thorn, were as follows.' The lhH.ly proved to be that of a Miss Cheesmau, about seventeen or eighteen years 'of aire. Tr appeals that a few davs previous to her disappearance, she liavl some ditlicuitv with her mother in regard to a young man in the vicinity who had been paying her his addressee, and it was suposed by her that their in-: tentions were to marry, which was ve ry much averse to the mother's feelings con the subject, and she reprimanded her very severely aboirt it. A few days af terwards another difficulty took place between her and a sister, probably be ing on the same subject, when the mo ther interfered, taking side against the deceased, and at the same time making some pretty strong threats as to what she-would do. The insulted daughter left her home and repaired to the house of a relative., saying as she went that her mother would repent of her conduct. While at the house where she went, she, in company with her relatives, werit 10 VVaterford, and while on her way there, or at the place, she requested her friend to lend her a shilling. After their return home she made some inquiries as to the nature of arsenic, asking if it was not white, saying she had been in the drug store and asked the man in attendance what was in a certain jar," and was told arsenic. While at the house of her cousin, she was asked if she was going home again ; she replied no unless she would go with her, to which she consented, and they went together. "The first remark of her mother was "Well, I suppose you have been around with a pack of lies." The daughter re plied ''No, mother, I don't carry lies in mv mouth, I carry truth where upon the mother gave her another se vere reprimanding. The daughter left the house soon afterwards, giving a few general directions how they should dis pose of her clothes. When lound, she was supposed to have been .going from her parents to her relatives, home. No external marks of violeuce could be discovered, on her person though she gave evidence of having died in great aeony. A small penknife and some other articles were found close by- A portion of the blade of the knife was covered with white powder, sup- nosed to be a part of the fatal dose. On Monday evening, Dr. Phelps assisted by Dr. Ferry, held a post-mortem eiam ination of the body. The structure of the walls of the stomach was found con- siderably broken down, and the mucus membrane .gave strong "evidence that violent intlamation had prevously ex- . isted A small portion of powder, correspon drng with that previously found on the knife, was l'ui:i 1 with the contents of the stomach: Although-no accurate chemical tests were applied to tlw; con tents of the stomach, yet "the proof is sufficient to warrant the conclusion that she came to her untimely end by swal lowing arsenic. i From the Gree-n.sbu.rg Press. AN IRISHMAN ON KNOW NOTHING ISM. The following extract of a letter from he Rev. Wm. irMyrjr), an Irish Methodist Preacher of Kentucky, to his son in this county, we publish by request: ' ' - It Feankport, Ky , Jan. 6, 1835." JJEAa box: You wish, to know my opinion about the Know Nothings, and if there are any in our State. I have it from good authority that there are in Kentucky not less than 60,000: and by the time the next election comes on, there will be. at least, 100,000, composed as I believe, of the best and most patriotic citizens. I look upon it as purely an American movement as the breaking'forth of the great recu perative power of the patriotic American people in their own defence. If I am prop erly in formed as to their intention, it is to .do what should have been done years ago, but better late than never. And if they , do not do it now, when H can be done quietly by the ballot-box, the time will come when, if done at all, it will be done through seas of blood. - I neve did believe that a Roman Cath olic cou'd be an American citizen, and no doubt you have often heard me say so. I saw them naturalized in Philadelphia by the hundred and heard their vouchers swear, that thev were" sober and indastri' ous, and well inclined toward the principles of the American Government and the Con stitution of the United States, when at the same time the fellow who vouched, and the gang who were sweating to be faithful to the Cons' ltution, were all of them drunk, I could never be made to. believe that A merican libertjror the Constitution would weigh a feather when the interest of their church would come in - competition. I never was surprised at their connection with the Democratic party. Bishop Hugh es stood as an idle spectator in the strug gle going on between the Whig and Dem ocratic parties, he didn't care a fig about one or the other, only so far as he might further his darling object It was easy for him. who was not interested in the success of either, to see which of them two would best suit his purposes; and trie sequel fully justified his judgement. 1 nave been tor a long time lully satisfi ed that the Roman Catholic church is a thousand times more guilty of treason against the government of the U. States, than Arnold or Burr ever could have been and infinitely more dangerous; and the element of danger is daily increasing. Cir cumstances have changed greatly since I came to the United Slates, in 1819. Then passnges were high, and none but the mid dle and upper clusses of societies cbuld find means to come: and in addition to that, O'Connel and his party had strong hopes of gaining: the ascendency in Ireland; and hey said, "Let the Protestants leave, and we shall rule in Irelind." , AN IRISH WIDOW" IX CLOVER. Seedy Mahomed, soon after his elevation t ) tee throne oj .Morocco, about. the mid dle of the "last century, was desirous to complete the defenses of Fez, and know ing the superiority of the English in en gineering, ho applied to the British Govern ment for the aid of some person skilled in the art. The request was acceded to, and an experienced sergeant of the sappers and Miners having been selected as a fit per son, "was placed at the disposal of his Ma jesty, iseeny Mahomed received nim witD much kindness, and allotted a suitable house for his reception. The sergeant con tinued in the service of the Sultan for some time after he had completed the works at Fez, and at length died, leaving his wid ow without issue. After his interment, the widow,' who was a pretty Irish woman, sought an interview with the Sultan, in or der to obtain a pension and the means of returning to her own country. His Ma jesty was much struck by her lair and comely appearance, and treated her with. condescension and benevolence. 1 hat in terview resulted in the poor Irish widow becoming th Sultana of Morocco. Conolly'i History of the Sappers and Miners. ONIONS. Among the vegetables lately much used at tables, we behold onions taking a very prominent part at the feasts. What does Professor Johnson says of onions? That if indulged in rate they draw tears from the eyes, and give tne Dream sucn a navor that no woman in her sober senses and se date skirts', could think of kissing you ! But Professor Johnson sa3's more than this, for though he allows that cabbages are ex-J cellent for cows, and that a mixture of oat meal and corn me,al constititute first rate provender for horses, yet the nutriment contained in onions is highly beneficial to man. They are indeed almost the most nutritious kind of vegetables and rank with peas; (onions and peas are everywhere just now.) they give strength. and satisfaction to the appetite and improve digestion. Therefore you may dine with impunity on nicely cooked onions and feel considerably improved by the feast PARISH RECORDS.
