IMPRISONMENT FOR BEADING THE BIBLE. N . A letter from Florence, states that anoth - - fTuscan has been made to feel the ven w geance of the popish priests. Domenico Cecchetti was seized at half-past four o'clock in the morning, hurried from his """Jlirdren, to the prison of the Bargello, con rfehfned without any trial," without any' 9 witnesses, by the Council of Perfecture, to n year's confinement in the Penitentiary of .Imbfogiano, near Monte Lupo, whither die was conveyed in chains on the following morning; the crimes for which he was Consigned to a dungeon being1 the posses sion of one Bible and two Testaments, and the avowal when examined by the Chan cellor of the Delegation of Sata Maria No vela, that he considered Christ the head of the church. He was a woikman em ployed ' in the tobacco manufactory of Emanuel Fenzi ifml Co., the well known bankers, who have for years formed this monoply. ' He lived on the first floor of a house in the Via Tadea. In another small apartment on the same floor was lodged a young man. the apprentice of a vintner in Borgo La Noce. He was struck by the good conduct of Cecchettis' children, and by the excellent and kind bearing o.f the father, and in the course of conversation nd familiar intercourse at length learned that the father was in the habit of reading with his children and his friends the Bible ABd in casual chat with his own master he repeated this circumstance to him, ex pressing his belief that the Bible could not be such a Very bad book, after all, when it produced such happy fruit. A few.days afterwards, the vintner went to confession of San Lorenzo, and there mentioned to the confessor that his ap prentice Lad been talking to him about Diodati's Bible, which he thought not so bad as had been represented. The priest immediat fy interrupted the confession, and refused him absolution. Next day he met Priest Buratti. the first curate of San Lo- EXPLOIT OF A TRIVATEERSMAN A writer in the Salem "Evening Jour nal" gives some interesting facts renzo, and one of the fiercest and most re lentless persecutors f the Tuscan Protes tants. "YY7hy, what is the matter with you," said Curate Buratti, "you seem dull? "Ah, Curate, no wonder, yesterday I was refused absoUition." "Refttsed absolution," rejoined the Curate, "impossible; refuse absolution to so good a Catholic as you. There must be some mistake; come to my house and confess to me, and I hope it will prove nothing." The vintner "made his confe ssion to Cu rate Buratti, and received absolution, the Curate Buratti, lost no time in denouncing Domenico Ceccheti to the Tuscan police as guilty of the crime of Protestant propa gandism. Some three months ago, four gendarmes suddenly entered Cecchetti's house, about nine o'clock in the evening, and seized and carried off in triumph one copy of Diodati's Bible, and two copies of the new Testa ment J Cecchetti heard nothing more of the matter for nearly ten weeks. On the mor ning of the 14th inst., however, he receiv ed an order to appear before the delegate of Santa Maria Novello, and was required to declare why three copies ef Diodati's Bible were found in his possession. "In deed, Signor Delegate," was the answer, "I wish there had been five instead of three, for there are five of us, my four boys and myself, and we require a Bible a piece." On being asked a3 to his opinion regar ding mass, confession, the authority of the Pope, he replied that" Jesus Christ had been once offered up a sacrifice for the sins of mankind; that no future sacrifice was or could be wanted." "As to confession, he said, when I have sinned, it is my duty to confess my sin, first to Almighty God and implore his pardon; then to my brother, if I have acted wrongly against my brother. As to the Pope being the head of the church,1 he said, I know no headship save that of Jesus Christ. The Pope is a con stituted authority, like you, Signor Chan cell iere," f Neither wheedling nor bullying could induce him to reveal the name of one of the Christain brethren with whom he read and discoursed on the Scriptures. The Chancellere, finding the attempt hopeless, then read over the minutes of the exami nation. Cecchetti himself persued it, and signed the same; and so, for the time, the affair terminated in the dismissal of the ac cused. -; - The paper thus obtained was submitted to the Council of Perfecture, which on the avowals it contained, sentenced Domenico Cecchetti to a years imprisonment in the penitentiary of Imbrogiana. Imbrogiana was formerly a vilIaof the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, which they solaced them selves after the cares of the State with ru xal pleasures, and ,13 now a dungeon for the protestant subjects of Leopold II., and in mat character, aououess artords nim as much pleasure as he is capable of receiv in re lation to the marine of Salem in years gone by. Among other things he eives the following account of an exploit of one ot the balem nrivateersmen in 1814: , I December 6, the Macedonian, Cap tain Penn To wnserid, arrived with prize goods, and twenty-two prisoners. The wav 111 which the captain came at, and captured one of his' prizes is fully eluci dated m the following anecdote, the substance of which the writer had from his own lips. It appears that just after he left the Western Islands, where be had stopped 10 recruit, and while he was cruising between those islands and Tristan de Acunha, a sail was discovered on his bow, toward which he. immediately kept away. , I While running slowly down, with a light breeze, the lookout at the mast head was hailed from the quarter-deck as follows: ; "last-head, there ?" j "Sir?" I "Do you see that sail now ?"r I "Ay, ay, sir." I "What does she look. like?" "She looks very large, sir. : Guess she's either a frigate or au Indianian. I On hearing this, Capt. T. took his glass and went aloft to satisfy himself in regard both to his enemy's strength aud calibre. After doing so, he came down from aloft, luffed his vessel up in the wind, sent all his men with the ex ception ot nine or ten below, hoisted Dutch colors, and kept.off again before the wind. Disguising himself so as to appear as much as possible like a Dutch skipper, and having transformed such of his men as remained on deck into very respectable Dutch sailors, Capt. T. ran boldly down across the enemy's stern and coming to under her leequar- ters, was hailed as follows: "Ship ahoy!" "Hallo." . "What ship is that?" The name of the Dutch vessel with which the captain was well acquainted, but which we have forgotten, was given in reply, and then Captain T., in bro ken English, inquired: "Vot ship ish dat.'" In reply to this the name of a noted Indiaman was given, with following ad dition : . "We are last from Baibary, bound to London, and short of provissions, can't you snpply us?' Ill answer to this Capt. T. replied in substance, that u the captain of the In diaman would faror him with a visit, he would see what he could do about it, and a short time afterward he had the satisfaction of seeing a boat alongside of his vessel, with the Lnglish captain 111 full uniform, .who immediately, came on board. With the utmost politeness and civil- ty of manner, Capt. T. invited the stranger into his cabin, as was customa ry in those days, to take a glass of wine. This invitation was, of course, immedi ately accepted, and the captain went below, where the rust omcer of the Ma cedonian, as had been previously arran ged, acted the part 01 steward, by pla cing upon the table wine and such oth er refreshments as the larder f the ves sel at the time afforded. Then the two skippers sat down to the the table, and after pledging each other in a friendly glass of wine, enter ed into an animated but general conver sation, in the course of which the En glishman animadverted at considerable length, and with much warmth, upon the proceedings of a certain privateers- man v commanded by one Townsend, who he solemnly averred was a regular Yanke devil. At this point of the proceedings Capt. T. gave the -wink" to his Stewart, pro tern, who in a clandestine manner han ded him a couple of pistols, one of which he instantly presented at the English captain, saying as he pid so: "bir, you are my prisoner. I am that Yankee devil T., about whom yoti have been so freely speaking. Choose wheth er; you will have your brains blown out or surrender your ship." .
