JOE BLUNTS FlftST GAME OF
; . loo..
- .. Richmond. Va., 1855. ;
Editor of the "Spirit of the Time.." Now
Joe Blunt was a you rig man who - httl
" growed up with gddJ teachings (I'm jist
; idling you as Uncle Joe .used lo tell it on
himself.) Well, by hook or crook, or how-
, somever, he got 'quainted with a eetof
wild, fellows, and, said they, Joe, don't
you want to know how to play Loo?'
what's Loo?' sez I. . ;
"-; .Vv .ij, Joe, a pretty little game at cards
can't lose anything at it. " S'pose you try
- it, Joe, I known yox knows how to play
V seven up, and we'll teach you hdw to play
": Loo.' . ' '. v-y-
- VVel!,' sez f, I'll go it. ' : ;
' 'Now yoti see there waa.Xtck Duke and
'--a 'great thick, headed chap named darter
Weaver so we sat dowm I had 'bout five
- dollars, and they ,'bOut the same. . We 'gan
, to play it alien cent, and a quarters (you
see I learnt it then, and I can tell it to you
straight,) and f'fore long all the change I
. had was up, and them too. 'Twas my
deal and I .turned up the six of hearts I
: never shall forget it for trumps. I raised
- tip my hand, and there, looking me : right
' in the face, was the ace, king, and queen.
1 Of course you luk the cakes then, Uncle
; Joe,' sez I. Let me tell you how 'twas.
,i Sez I, . boys, it's no use of playing these
pape's ' I'm "got it, sure.: I was 'bout ra-
- king down the. stuff, when that swell head
ed Carter Weaver sung out 'Hold on,
Joe, my boy, yod aim got it yet ; . not so
easy.' -- ,..'. .'-;''.
How come I aint ?' says I. ; z
Play 'em ou' says he, 4 and I'll show
you ' ,-' . :j -:
Same thing,' sez I, and I popped down
1 1. a queen fust, and he put down the ten
spot (he called it jail widows) Then I let
him have the king, and he put down the
. nine spot and said 1 laughing, ' In course
you can't beat the ace.' J
.. ' Thpre,',- said he, this must be a foul
deck, for darn me if I wunt jist playing off
, on Uncle Joe, for I've got the ace of h- arts
myself holding down a- card - with his
, two thumbs on the ends ' It's right hard
" case, Joe, but you see my ace.', " v . ,'r . -
- 4 Count, ihe cards,' said I, 'count the
.cards' "And 1 did count the cards, sand
'twas all right, 52 in there. ' .'J Well now,
let's all take dowa the pot,' says Carter,
and divide equally.' ; L" " - ' -
All- right,' sez I; and so little did I
know then 'bout the . things that I never
'spected that that scoundrel, Carter Weav
' ert had ; the tray of hearts I etween his
thumbs.;- When 1 think of Carter Weav
er's ace, f can't help laughing at my green
l ness, but whew f . boys, I'm some now
that is, folks tells me so. - ; - - v 7
. Well, I vowed I git even with that crab,
Carter Weaver, so one court day I puts at
Carter for a game ,of Loo. Of course he
said yts,' for he 'spected to pluck me a
gin. So we sol at it, Carter and me, and
two other boys, and after a while we got
: at a smasbii g loo. I kept my eye on Car
ter and seed him crib the ace of clubs, and
lay it'on his knee, and pretty soon he got
' the king and queen Uoo; I never said a
word, but the very next deal up corned a
club for trumps, and Carter knocked the
table hard , for a stand. 4 Well,' said he,
sich cards as these is like stealing your
money, boys.' . '
' I'll stand,' said I, and I slipped my hand
onto Carter's knee and tvik off the ace, king,
and queen, " and put my hand in its place.
I watched Carter, and he quietly put his
hand down ami tuk up the other. Carter
had the lead, and with a broad grin on his
ugly face, sez he, 4 Come to this one play
ing. from the back arid 'down come the
- deuce of hearts and I mounted it with the
queen of trumps. ' ' You ought to have jist
- seen Carter's face then; it looked as long
as a garden rail ; and here's, the ace and
king too. 6ez I, raking down the pewter.
Carter looked all round the table, and sez
. he, dryly,' 4 Gentlemen, I'm goin' to quit,
there's cheating goin' on here.'
' I thought so, too, Catter, said I, when
you found them two aces of hearts in that
t pack last ?.week.:.-'i ' : ; ;
Let's play on,' said one of the other
. boys."'' "';.i:.:j;' ''".-"'-v...,;,r -,r. r -,
- 4 No, b'lieve not, sez Carter, - and he left
looking as huffish as an old maid.
Now, boys, didn't ; I gather "old Carter
that pop 1 And we all used to tell Uncle
t Joe that he did sure and he'd take a few
more whiffs at bis pipe and leave us with
our game. - t . ,. '. J. T. G.
; A-STEP BACKWARD.
-A New York journal, in a sudden glow
of radical inspiration, has just revived a
doctrine which a certain char cter known
in history by the name oXJcuJi Cade attemp
ted, unfortunately for himself, to introduce
practically in England some four hundred
years ago namely, the proscription and
uppression of "educated politicians."
The journal to which' we refer we are un
ible lo name, because its name is not given
by the paper into which we find the senti
ment copied and from which we quote it,
as follows: r
. '"The country; has tried educated politi
cians for the three or four . Administrations
last past, and had toost wretched, imbecile,
p! Tiderin, retrogressive . Governments as
the (we think, natural) consequence.' ;.4It
is contended by the writer (continues our
cor emporary) that the ueoula mav do bet
ter by seiecting from among themselves far-
tjjcia, i cuaiiin, uiercnants, and others, in
prefer?:. -ce to lawyers, who generally con
stiiu' a bulk of 'educated politicians ' "

write thy name, or hast thou a murk to thy
self like an honest plifin dealing man?

well brought up that I can write my
name. '; ; ; ' :; .' : " " "

he's a villain and a traitor. '; -; - : 1
'; uCade. Away with him, I say; hang
him with his pen and inkhorn about his
neck." - . , v- Henry VI.. .
It is not very long since we had occasion
to rebuke the avowal of the same doctrine
by no less a personage than the present
Governor of Tennessee, who, emulous pos
sibly of the fame of his great prototype of
the fifteenth century, undertook, ia his in
augural message to contemn the value' of
educatidh in public men. We had- hoped
that this bright idea of the dark ages had
been confined to his Excellency, but find
that it is not. - ' "
; A Baltimore contemporary in comment,
ing updn the New York article has some
excellent remarks, but we think he has not
exactly hit the point at which the' New
York writer seems to aim. It is not so
much to lawyers he objects as to educated
men in our. public councils. "The first
thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers,1 ' not
because they are lawyers, but because they
pare supposed to be men of education. Af
ter we have committed . this Wholesome
wholesale murder, let us make diligent
search for ; every man who can read or
write, for this will show that he has had
the elements of education, and "hang him
with his pen and inkhorn about his neck."
Tue most appropriate answer, therefore,
that can be given to the jacobin sentiment
fiat we have '-tried educated politicians
long enough" is that which the crea mas
ter of human motive has furnished in his
history of Jack Cade's rebel ion. If his pro
phetic vision bad embodied before him the
New York or ihe Tennessee politician he
could not have painted him more to the life
than he has done in the few sentences quo
ted above.
j After the foregoing remarks were writ
ten, we have seen, with as much surprise
as regret, in a leading and influential jour
nal of New York, an article recommending
that the Federal Judiciary the District, if
not the Supreme Judges should be made
elective by periodical popular vote; and for
no other reason than because Judge Kane,
of Pennsylvania, has felt himself bound to
obey the Co stitution of the United States
in a recent case of abduction of slaves, in
stead of yielding himself body and soul, to
the behests of fanaticism. , Surely ait is the
very error of, the uoon; she comes more
tear the earth than she was wont, and
makes men mad." It is bad enough, in all
conscience,' to have a State Judiciary elec
tive; bu if the nme is ever to come when
ihe Supreme Judicial Tribunal is to be com
posed of men chosen by and dependent on
the vacillating favor of the poptllace, then
indeed, shall we have taken a fatal step
backward Nat fat.
