VOLUME NUMBER 67. WILMINGTON, N.-C, SATURDAY MORNING, AUGUST 18, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER MISCELLANY. ANOTHER 'GRACE DARLING; The Buffalo Commercial of the 1 1th inst. bontains a detailed afccount of the exploit of Mrs. Becher, fesides on the Canada Shore of Lake Ere,' til Savin the lives of Seven seamen who were wrecked nfcar her residence:: " " " ' - - On the morning of the '20th "November, 1834, the schooner Conductor left lheport bf A trihertbifrg, bound.for Toronto, with a bargo of ten thousand bushels of corn'; The wind blew fresh from -the southwest hll day, a heavy sea'ranning meantime.; About 5 orc1ock, P. M:, the wind increase'd o a perfect huricanfei rtnd nil the - canvass w.is reefed snog' down.: Toward tnidnight u severe etorm arose, . The topsail sheets Vere carried way, the boat': was washed from the davitsthe decks clean of every thing, and the vessel would 'not obey her helm. nndjseenfied,,to..8etlleiaS the.troug-h of the sea. - - , - About 4 o'clock in the morning of the 21st the crew of the schooner Jinade what ihey supposed to be Lang Point lights but it was really the light at Long Point Cut. The thickly drifting snow instantly obscur ed this light, and m about half an hour af ter the vessel struck botiofa. - Although the vessel .was not triore than two hundreds yards from the shore, it was impossible to form an accurate opinion as tdthe locality, because of the thickly drifting snow. The sea made a clear.. breach over the Vessel, and forced theereMr iBtd the rigging, where they remained from 5 o'clock in the morn ing until 2 tr the afternoon. Ice was mak ing fast all the time. .Tbe crew then des cried awoman and two little boys approach ing along the beach. ' , . The woman and children built a fire on the shore, and made signs to the sailors to swim ashore, i The sea was so great that they were afraid to venture, until the cap tain, thinking the risk of drowning better than almost, certain death by cold and ex posure, struck out from the wreck, and by extraordinary efforts nearly reached tbe shore; but his strength failed, and being caught by the undertow, he would have been carried out had not the woman come to his assistance. She seeing his critical situation, came to him as speedily as the deep-water would permit, and having walk ed in up to her-neck, fortunately reached him, he being utterly exhausted. -The wo man snpported the man and drew him a shore, having been herself seveal times beat en down by the force of the waves. With the assistance of the boys, she drew him to the fire and resuscitated bim. : . The mate of the schoonner next strnck out, but in like manner failed to reach the shore, and sank. The captain, supposing himself sufficiently restored, went to the assistace.of the mate, but. again himself gate way and tne woman again went into the angry waters, out to the utmost depth at which she could stand, and brought the two men ashore. The mate seemed' to be lifeless, but was at length restored. la ad dition to these efforts, five several times did the woman go out to the receding surge, and at each time bring an exhausted drown ing seamen ashore, until; seven persons the master, mate and five of the crew- were saved. It was evening now, and one man who could not swim still' clung to the rigging. During the whole night the woman paced DacK ana tortn : along tne snore, renewing the fire, encouraging the rescued men, giv ing them food and warm tea, and adminis tering to their comfort . ' From time to time she would pause,' and wishfully regarding the stranded, vessel, thus give utterance to her humanity : - vP'V-. : .;?;..: " Oh, if. I could save that poor man I fehould be happy." When morning at last came, oa 'he 22J, the storm having abated, ihe sea was less violent. The master, and crew being now strengthened and invigo rated by the food and fire, constructed a rnft and reached their.comrade, whose res olute spirit, though fast giving away, was srill sufficient to enable" him to retain his position in '.he rigging".. "" Thus he, too, was saved, though badly frozen1."- The crew re mained at the cabin of Mr, S. Becker near ly a week before they were able" to depart. , On the;week following this occurrence, two American vessels were lost on' the same point, whose crews. were greatly com forted by Mrs. Becker, whose husband was still engaged in trapping. The crews of these vessels were sheltered in her cabin, and were the recipients of her hospitable and humane attentions and care. " We, the captain and erew of the schr. Conductor, whose names are hereunto sub scribed, certify the correctness of the above statement, ; - ; " - V :'-'; .; : Henby IIackett, captain, Johh Jones, mate. - 'i i James J . George NicoDEMCa, do. - I certify, as owner of the schooner Con ductor, that the above are the names of the captain and crew who were on board the schooner at the time she was wrecked, S3 stated in the foregoing narrative. - " A .-' Jon McLeod. We have simply to state, that on Mon day evening next,- Mrs. Becker will be at the American Hotel, at the request of nu merous gentlemen, and that thus a conven ient opportunity will be aflbrded for ladies ? - ! rentSeraen to meet her. 'Mark that text,' said Richard Adkins to his grand-son Abel, who was reading to htm the 32d Psalm", 'Mark that text, 'He ihat trusteth in the Ldrd, mercy shall conv pass him about.' I read it in my youth and bel'eved, and now I read it in my old age, thank God, I know it to benrue. Ob, it is a- blessed thing, in the midst of the sor rows of the world, Abel, to trust in the Lord.';:: . ' -." ::J .'-i-- These are hard times; hard for the rich and harder still for the poor. But let not the poOf man be cast down.- God's eye is upon bim. . And now is the' time to trust in God arid not waver. - Many a man has been reddced to want, and at the very time of his greatest necessities the . hand of the Lord has been extended ;to relieve. The The Rev.' Henry Yertni author of Tbe Complete Duty of Mart wasonc as tna oy of -God's , people havV beehlh great want. He owed money, and had none to pay the debt. ' The creditor was importu nate for the payment of his bill He had no, resource left, but with earnest supplica tion to mane known his wants to God". And mark the result, while he was upon his knees, a letter was brought inclosing a bank-note of 50., equal to two hundred and fifty dollars. H? never found out the don or. But God 6ent it, sent it in the time of his greatest distress; and his biographer re lates, that he was at length enabled to live in continual reliance upon, the care of Pro vidence, and his 'wantJ were remarkably supplied. He continued to trust, and God continued to take care of him. And so it has been in thousands of instances. ; But the difficulty with many persons is, while they can trust God whenever things look prosperous, yet in times of want they lose their faith: and then failing to trust, they afo apt to do wrong by making use pf sinful means of getting along. If these words come before the eye3 of one who is hesitating, thinking to lite better. by doing what his Conscience tells him is wrong, let him stop. O, mybrother, shun the" first false step. God's arm is not shortened, that he cannot help you. Trust him now when the day is dark, and the times are hard. Continue to trust, and God wilt help you. Yea, he is pledged to help you. But if you take one false step; beware; you must th n take another and another, and so you will be led away from -your father in beav en. Beware of the first false step. Remem ber the case of another clergyman in Eng land, the Rev. Dr. Dodd, who' was con demned to death for committing- forgery, and was hung upon the gallows. He made one false step when he was a minis ter; and this led on to others, until at last he died the death of a felon. . He was in the habit of gathering his people in his own bouse for the purpose of prayer and reli gious instruction; but doing this exposed him to the reproach of some of his breth ren in the ministry; and in his own house he told tbe few who came together to be benefited, that 'he was obliged to give up the method of helping their souls because it exposed him to so much reproach.' His conscience told him to go oh, fear bid him stop. He yielded, and so lost a good con science. And then he sunk lower and lower, until he committed forgery. Trust in God. Are your wants many Trust in God. Does your family lack food f Trust in God. Continue to trust. Keep a brave heart, and God -will help you. t. F. s. W.I. S.
