VOLUME X NUMBER .70. WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY MORNING, AUGUST 25, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER 1172 MISCELLANY. MIK Ef FINCH AND THE BULL. ..The story pf Mike Finch and the bull would make a cynic laugh, o Mike took a notion to gp iu swiminig, dnd he had just got his clothes off when he saw Deacon Smith's ball - making at him the bull was a vicious animal, and had fcome near killing two three persons consequently Mike felt rather "jubus." tie dii't want to call for help, for he was "waked, and the nearest place from where assistance could arrive was the meeting house, which was . at the time ' filled with worshippers , among -whom; was the "gal Mike was paying his devours to," iSo he. dodged theibull as the ani mal came at him, and managed to catch him by the tail. He was dragged round till nearly dead, and - when he thought he coukl hold no longer,; he made up his rnmd ha had better "hollow." . And now we will let him tell his own story : So, looking at the matter in, all its bearings, I cum to tile'., conclusion . that I'd better let sum one know whar I was. So I gin a yell louder than a locomotive whistle, and it wan't long before I seed the deacon's .two dogs a comin' down like, as if they war seeing which could -get thar fust; I know'd who they were . . . i - - .i , it- f ' -arier mey u jiue . iub;-uu -.ogm iur, a ' was sartin, for they were orful weno juous, and had a spite '-. agin me. "So says I, old brindle, as riding is as cheap as walkin'on this route, if you've no ob jections, , I'll just take.- a deck passage on that ar back o'youm. "So I warn't very long getting astride of him ; then, if you'd bin thar, you'd have sworn thar Avarn'i nothing' human, in that a mix, the sila fie so orfully as the critter and I rolled rou;: I the field one dog on one side and one on the other, tryin' to clinch my feet. 1 prayed and cussed, and cuss ed and prayed, until I couldn't tell which 1 did, at last and neither warn't of no use they 1 were so orfully mixed up. ; : ? - Well, I reckon I rid about half an hour this way,7 when: old briadle thought it were time to .stop to take in a supply of wind, and cool off a little. '. So .when we got round to a tree that stood thar, he naturally halted." : So 1 jist clum up a branch kalkelating to roost thar till I starved afore I'd be rid round that ar way any longer. I war a making tracks for the top of the tree, when I heard su thinr a 'making' an orful buzzin' over head. I kinder -looked up, and if thar wan't weU, that's ho use a sweaiin but it war the biggest hornet's nest ever Lilt. rYou'II "gin ia".'riow, I reckon, Mike," 'cause there's no help for you. -But an idee struck me then that I stood a heap better chance a ridin' the bull than whar I was. Sez I, old feller, if you'll ; hold v on, I'll- ride to the next .station anyhow, let that be what it will. - c. t::. j -j.--.i i v. : : and looked aloft to see what I had gain ed by ch'arigiu' quir'e.s, and, gentle men, I'm a lier'if thar warn't uigh hall i i i -- .t . ; i a. Dusnei oi me sungm warmims reauy tcv pitch into me when the word 'go' was gin. - Well I reckon they got it, for; all hands' started for pur company. ' Some on em hit the dogs, about a quart struck : me, and the rest charged on brindle. - .This time tbe dogs led off fust, dead bent ; for the old deacon's, and bs soon as old brindle and I could get under way we followed, a3 I was' only a deck passenger, and, had nothin' to do with steerin' the craft; I swore,5 if, l.had,' we shouldn't have rim that channel, any how. . But as I said I next,, and the hornets dre'kly after - The dogayellin' brindle bellerin, and the hor nets buzzin' and stingin.' . , .".-. " -y t Wei; we had, got about r two hundred yards from the house, and the deacon heard us and cum out, I seed 'him hold up his hand and turn white;! reckoned he was praying then, for . he didn't expect to b called for so soon, and it warn't long nei ther, afore the whole congregation, men, women and children, cum out, and then all hands went to yellin' None of 'em had the fust notion that brindle and I belonged to this world. I gist turned my head and- passed the hull congregation. . i see the run would be up soon, for brindle' couldn't turn an inch from a fence that stood dead ahead. Well, weeached that fence, and 1 went ashore, over the old critter's "head,, larwlin' on t'other side and lay thar stun ned. ' ' -" " ' r . It warn't long afore some" of em"as was not scared cum runrir to see whar I was; far nil hands kalkelated that the bull and I belonged - together. But : when brindle walked off by hiir.self,; they" seen how it war, and one of 'em" said 'Mike Finck has got the wust of a semmmage 'once in his life !' Gentlemen," from that day I drop ped the curtin business, and never spoke to a gal since,- and when " my hunt is up on thi3 yearth, -there won't be any more Fincks, and it's all ovin' to Deacon Smith's Brindle'Bull. ' '. .'.. 7From tAe Richmond Dispatch, 22iinsl. , NOBLE CONDUCT. T 5 t Some ten days since, when six or seven r-5'.ients of Portsmouth were taken down i i this city with yellow fever; and sent to t . 3 hospital the panic became so great that even the friends and relatives of the aflic ted ?.- 2 from them, nurses could be had for r r 1 :v-3 net money, and Dr. Snead, the hes; it.il jr.-.ysiciao, found, himself sa com- letely overwhelmed with labor 'that he 1 id u go !cih day and night, to prevent h-s rat er,:? frcn d yin from neglect. Just rt this iltae cr.2 c2 cur own citizens, Mr. Henry Myers, with - that disinterestedness far which ha is char.:c':r':tr and regard- ' -.. con- .: lorward '.j c.icd his service 3 &3 a nurse, which "V.y RCCf:-t- ' - - I f; :t';-t T20- '3 . devoted himself to the duties' he had un dertaken, never sleeping a minute unless in a chair, by the bed side of a sufferer, where he could be easily aroused and nev er leaving the hospital, untd . informed by the tittending physician that his aid was no longer needed. At a meeting of the Council last Satur day afternoon the above facts were stated and vouched for by members, where it was further stated that Mr Myers was then pre paring to visit Norfolk "as a nurse, where he felt that he could do something to re lieve those who needed attendance. Dr. Snead, however,- thought it best to retain him one week longer at the hospital, for fear that other persons now here from the infected cities, might be taken with the fe ver, at the expiration of which time, if no new case occurs, Mr. Myers will certainly visit Norfolk, and devote himself to the ser vice of the sick. During the Mexican war Mr. Myers join ed the army, and while in Louisville, Ky., on his way to Mexico, a small bey fell in to the river and would have instantly drowned but for his leaping into the stream, regardless of his own life, and rescuing him from a watery grave. As soon as the fath er of the little boy heard of this noble con duct, he at once sought Mr. Myers, and with heart overflowing with gratitude, ten dered him a present of 8300, which Mr Al. indignantly rpjected, declaring that he had only performed his duty, and done that which thousands of Virginians would have done, without reward, save that which conscience gave in knowing that they had saved the life of a fellow-being. The fath er, however, feeling his indebtedness to the gallant soldier, presented him with a cost ly pair of epaulettes, which he now has, and will retain while life lasts. Such has been the conduct of Henry Myers such will be his conduct in the future, we have no doubt. Forgetting self in every thing, and ever ready to serve a friend in need, he deserves, and should re ceive, a substantial testimonial from his na tive city, in whose service he is ever ready to devote his life. " SCENE IN COURT. Judge Bring the prisoner into court Pete Here I is, bound to blaze, as the spirits of terpentine said when it was all on fire. Judge We will take a little of the fire out of you. How do you live ? ' Pete I ain't particular, as the oyster said when they axed if he'd be fried or roasted. " Judge We don't want to hear what the oyster said or the. turpentine either. What do you follow 1 Pete Anything that comes in my way, as- the locomotive said when he run over the Jittle nigger. . ; Judge We don't care any thing about the locomotive. What's your business 1 Pete That's various, as the cat said when she stole tbe chicken off the table. Judge That comes near the line I sup pose. ... Pete Altogether in my line, as the rope said when it was choking the pirate. Judge If I hear any more absurd com parisons 1 will give you twelve months. Pete I am done, as the beefsteak said to the cook." : . Judge Now, sir, your punishment shall depend upon the shortness and correctness of your answers. I suppose you live by going round the docks. Pete No, sir; I can't go round the docks without a boat, and I hain't got any. Judge Answer me ; how do you get your bread ? Pete Sometimes from the Baker's and sometimes I eat taters. Judge No more of your stupid inso lence. ; How do you support yourself ? Pete Sometime on my legs and some times on my chair. Judge I order you to answer this ques tion correctly. How do you, do Pete Pretty well, I thank you. How do you do?' '.Here the Judge was completely ' sold,' and Petevwas allowed to retire without any further interrogatories as to his occupation or mode of living. :t ?Never,' says a celebrated moral writer yield to that temptation which to most young people is very strong, of exposing other people's weakness and infirmities, for the sake of .diverting the.t company, or of showing ; your own superiority.
