- ' ' - From the Washington Star.
; A RAILROAD TRAVELER.
-- In Saturday's Star we briefly alluded to
the construction of a railway -in order to
to facilitate the removal of the mails at the
city post office to and from the wagons;
this piece of 'internal improvement' being
necessary in consequence of the building
operations in that immediate vicinity; and
we are now enabled to relate an amusing
occurrence m connection with the enter
prise: . ' . -
On Friday a stranger happening to be
locomoting in thai neighborhood, perceived
a car emerging from the rear -of the city"
post office building, and the idea at once
occurred to him that it was the railroad de
pot; so-he asked a person standing by
where he sho Id put his baggage whkh
consisted of a plethoric carpet-bag. 'Just
throw it into the wagon,1 replied the: per
son addressed, "and if will be taken care
of.' The traveler acted accordingly, an t
smiled apparently delighted to rid himself
of his burden. : Having ascertained at what
time the train w s to start, be hastened up
the steps leading to the city postmaster's
private room,:and there finding water, soap
basin, and a towel refreshed himself by re
moving from his face and hands the dust
of travel, no doubt conceiving himself for
tunate in finding that the 'depot' was so
well provided with such nicely arranged
cleansing materials. - v - - "
Having combed bis hair and whiskers,
he sat down to read the papers. He had
not been long thus engaged before he was
interrupted, not by the bell ring, nor by the
screech of the steam whistle, but by -the
voice of tbe messenger who politely inform
ed him that he was in the 'wrong box, or
in other words, in Col. Berret's soom. The
stranger regarded this as an impertinent
interference- not for a moment doubtinsr
his own mistake and, somewhat tartly,
told the messenger that he did hot care a.
button, or rather something intangible, com
mencing with a d and ending with a .
He said he had as much right there as any
other passenger. ? ;
Passenger 1': exclaimed the messenger,
'what do you mean, sir?' :: ,". '- , i "
"Mean," replied the traveller," 'why,
that I havr put my baggage aboard, for
Baltimore, and that I'm waiting for .the of
fice to be opened that I may buy.my tick
et. I'll wait till the agent comes.' . . U
. A smile might now be seen on the face
of the messenger, as Jie said, You've made
a mistake, suv This "is Hot the depot' -'"
'None of your nonsense; don't 1 see the
railroad, and wasn't 1 told by one of the
conductors to put my baggage in the car
and that it would be taken care of?' said
the traveller seriously, i 'You can't impose
upon me in that way.' And on this part
the dialogue was, of course, conducted in
a strain of seriousness strongly contrasting
with the manner of the amused messenger.
Finally, he was convinced of his mis
take, and exclaiming, 'I thought this was
the depot!' darted from the office, and
'seizing his carpet-bag, at a rapid gait took
tbe direction to the railroad station. "
I A FRIGHTFUL ACCIDENT.
As the Rome and Boot .ville four-horse
stage, with seven passengers and the
driver, was u crossing over the Mohawk
river bridge, about four miles from
Rome, N. Y.. a section of the structure
gave way, precipitating the stage, hors
es and passengers . info the river, a
height of about sixteen or eighteen feet
One of the horses was killed, and the
driver was seriously hurt, but strange to
say, all of the passengers escaped with
slight bruises.
CHURCHES IN RUSSIA.
There are no seats in any of the
Greek churches, aud even the Emperor
himself must stand during the service.
The priests are almost all majestic look
ing men tall, with hair falling over
their shoulders,; and ; beard sometimes
half-way to their waists. They are not
allowed to wear any ornament. In the
centre of the church, on Good Friday, is
placed a body of the Redeemer, ; either
painted or in reli. f, and a book which
is laid upon the breast Their sorrow
seems real. " Their sad faces and ear
nest manner show what they feet .
