ill - . V'F 1 I ft 11 wo VOLUME XNUMBER 73: WILMINGTON, N. C, SATURDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 1, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER 1 175 0 lYllSCElXANV A GLOOMY PICTURE. The Argus of Tuesday contains the fol lowing melancholy account of matters in Norfolk by night. . It in indeed intensely solemn u .-' ' .". ' '' - The appearance of the City at night is perhaps more gloomy and distressing than in the day time. -The dwellings, as well lis the stores, are all closed and dark. The nogs bnd themselves together and prowl about, as if aware thit something sad and Unusual was going on. At an hour, when in other days, the piazzas nd streets would present life, health and gaiety, the sound of a human foot-step is not beard, and a familiar voice is something cheering to th-heart.- - A few evenings since, we walked lhfo Main and other principal streets at night. A dark and lowering cloud had just pass ed over, aud the moon shone with unusual brightness, lighting up fully the deserted avenues and fashionable promenades mocking as it were the scene of desolation beluw. .ur spucious harbor, smooth as glass, and cleared of vessels, steamers, and sail boats, reflected the brightness ami seemed more beautiful than ever. But as we passed along, we heard the distinct words of inconsolable grief uttered by the bereaved. Death had been in and struck his blow, ttie victims had flln, the re mains had been hstily conveyed away, and sorrowing relatives and friends wen weeping, and tellinsr of their loss in words that were full of affection muhlecp mni ing. We passed on sad and gloomy enough. But soon there were other sounds that u held us delaying." We mention only one affecting case. On one of the principal streets the windows of the seco d story of a bouse were all up; lights were biir'iing, ami nurses were busy around a bed that stood in sight ; and the groans of the dying that fell upon our ear, will per haps never be forgotten. We knew from the struggle that Nature seenud to be ma king, that life was fast ebbing out. The following morning we were informed that the struggle was over.. Death had accora plished his purpose. The conflict had end ed. The victims were still, breathless dead. A fond mother and her son lay in the stirless slumber of death, side by side, on the same death bed. Soon the busy, bustling undertaker was there, nd then the UiOther and her child were hurried out to the graveyard, where they s eep togeth er in deep sepulchral stillness. This is on ly one of ma y such scenes But we thought it intensely solemnizing and awful. LETTER FROM NORFOLK. Mr. Thomas Briggs, who left the city of Washington some time since to assist the physicians of Norfolk in nursing the sick, writes to the Star from Norfolk, on the 23d instant, as follows: I buried young Edmund A James last evening ; and went out to the Cemetery for the first time. The undertaker that went with us told me it made eleven be had bu ried yesteriay, and that he had four more to take out before he went to bed. Recol lect this is but one firm, out the principal one; this does not include the hospitals I am at Prof. Strange's, opposite the Acad emy, waiting on young S range, a cousin" of the Professor, who was left here, anT has been neglected until it i - too late He was left three days without taking medicine- the family are up at Charlottesville and when he is gone, I am to go to Mr. LePage's, near the National Hotel, where here are two sick. Mr Goy's family are all down. I have no time to hunt up names', but they reckon at the office that there are between three and four hundred cases m JNorfolk, and a little over that in Ports mouth, although in Portsmouth there are not more than 2.000 people, from n census taken last week. Yesterday was by far the worst day of the panic. Every, body looks wild at you,if they find you are nursing the sick. Rev Dr. Armstrong goes every where ; he visited Jennings' family yesterday, and told me they were very much distressed at their loss, lhave TJOl been to see Mr. VV. since Saturday, as no one wants visiters at this time, but the sick. A woman died last night next door lo Strange's, and another, Miss Kennedy, sick on the other side this morning. S you perceive it is all ovrr the city ; yet you hear people going about saying, ' Ob ! don't go in the infected district.' I go ev ery where myself, but don't go out at night unless I am obliged. 1 never saw such hideous looking corpses as they are. This young, man is looking at me while I am writing, and his eyes look as though he was dead. It is a common thing to see ihem carried along the street in blankets, taking them to the hospital. Stevens' hat store was opened until yesterday, but that frightened them off. " There is a man dying next door now I bear him groaning the same place they took the woman from last night. Times are very squally." TUB CHINESE " M. Hue, in his entertaining work on the Chinese, says that at a funeral, the tain and woman assemtuVd in separ ate apartments, aud until the time, comes - at which it is settled they shall grieve, ihey smoke, drink, laugh and gossip with such an air of careless enjoyment, that a stranger wout suppose they were the most contented and happiest people an the world. But when the nearest relation informs the men that the hour has arrived, their conversation ceases, their faces become lugubrious, they sur- . routid the coffin, and the lamentations begin. The most pathetic speeches are addressed to the dead ; every one speaks his own sorrowful monologue, interrupt ed by sobs and groans, and spriukled with a profussion of genuine tears.- But at a: given signal the whole scene abruptly changes again, the tears are dried up, the performers do not even , top to finish a sob c a groan, but they take their pipvs, and lo! then are again these incomparable Chinese laughing, gossiping and drinking tea. The. part of the women is, if possible, played with still greatei perfection. Their grief has .such an appearance of sincerity, their sighs are so agonizing, their tears so a hundant. their voices so broken with sobs, that notwithstanding the certainty that the whole affair is a purely fictiti ous representation, the beholder can hardly help being affected by it. AN INDIAN DUEL. Long ere the ceasoless, ever-rolling tide of the pale faced Che-mchke-mtiu, had swept away from their homes and their hunting grounds the war-like tribe of the Miamis, while their uuneroii ramp-fires iUnmmed ihe'itUls-auJ val leys of the West, when the braves of their tribe passed to battle along the war-path, Rlin-ge-ne-ke-aw, (the big man) one of the gallant chiefs of the na tion, felt his ire excited at the reputa tion which a member of his tribe, a half meed, called Francois Godfrey, had obtained for courage and personal strength. Min-ge-ue-ke-aw claimed to be the bravest as well as the strongest man of mis jteople, aud would endure no rival. He chafed like the wild boar when he heard the braves and red heanti'S ex tol the manly hearing of his comp.-titoi, ,nid he resolved to test the courage and physical p nver of Frank in single om bat. Hw gave no challenge to mortal strife with your humble .servant' at the IxWom, but meeting Frank one day he accosted him with, 'Are you a brave man ?' 'Yes,' was the reply. Then meet me here tomorrow at sunrise with your scalping knife in your ight hand: we will join our left hands, inJ he who kills the other is the best aud bravest wairior of the Mianiis. ' Frank, though a man ot dauntless courage and herculean strength, saw no ,ood reason to test either in that way. but uothing but b'ood would satify the ehjet, and Frank replied. 'I'll meet you.' At the appointed hour the great chief strode along to the battle ground. He relied not only on his personal strength, but also on bis great dexterity in the use of the scalping-ktufe, which he had tried on the pale fuces at Haimer St Clair's defeat, and all along our frontier. His dark eye flashed, as with the deep growl of aytiger, he advanced to antici pated r'n Ittfy"1 He brandished-his knife, and called on his antagonist to sing his death-song, ere his spirit was dismissed iy the great thief to the distant hunting grounds of the dead warriors of theii race who had fallen in battle and gone to the far west, beyond the great ri -rs- Frank saw that there was no avoid ing the deadly strife. To refuse was to be branded as a coward and a squaw. The only alternative was victory or sud den death ; so he flourished his keen blade, gave a shrill whoop of defiance, aud advanced. They joined their left hands, and there they stood, face, to face like Fitz James and Khrdf ric Dbu Each looked to snn and sky and plain, - t Ah what iTn-y ne'er might see rain.' They mustered all their strength for the deadly thrust, raised their keen knives aloft, but ere they fell, Frank, the grip of whose baud was like an iron vice, wrung the left hand of Miu-ge-ne ke-aw with surh tremendous force as nearly crushed the bones together. The chief, with a yell of anguish, drop ped his knife, and cried out. 'You area braver and 9 stronger warrior than I am ; let us shake hands and be friends forever.' TO THE LADIES. There is, says the Boston Transcript a sign projecting from the door of a man-tua-makers shop, in Troy, -the conclu ding portion of which reads tiius : "N B. Dresses made lower than ever." COMPLAINT. A writer in the Baltimore American complains that the contributions for Nor folk and Portsmouth are not equally di vided, and urges the attention of those who receive the money and food to that fact.
