WHOLE NUMBER I lr u VOLUiVlE XN UMBER 7(5.; WILMINGTON, N. C.s SATURDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 8, 1855. AUSCEl.LAiW. - r Prom the Lutheran Observer. A CHAPTER -ON. liuYS. "How the rai-ti of txjys haa changed since I was one of them,", was the invol untary exclamation of an olcTgentletuan, frs he sat 'resting his hsnds upon a sil ver headed can'o before him.- His own silvery head bore-witness vof the many years that had passed over hirn, bat his keen black yes gave Tno symptoms that Time had. diminished thejUrength vf " mind, or clear-sighted - judgment, that had always distinguished him. "VVhat makes the difference, uncle V vas the quick rejoinder of; a young mo ther who sat near him, plying ber busy needle, - , , J , Like all yonug motrwrs she was par ticularly sensitive "on the subject of ber children, and quite reluctant to admit any -comparison to their disadvantage. She would fain .'regard hers as modet boys, a great, improvement upon- past generations, 'and "yet she- honored the opinions of "her guust,- and r wished to have his approbation. A few moments .since, and her three boys had made their presence seusibly felt in that now quiet room. Had you ' looked in then, you would have "seen the eldest," a lad of thirteen, with his hand upon his mother's shoulder, readirfg from an open letter which she1 had before her, whil he made comments in no gentle tone j the second son in the, centre-of the room, snapping the long lash of a whip, to the very imminent -danger of sundry vases and mantle ornaments; while tht yougest stood at the half open door, bea ting a loud tattoo, occasionally interrup ting himself to say Boys,, do come ; I tell you the governor (u respectful term applied to his father,) is waiting for us; he says we miH be there, soon, or we -shall have to walk instead of ride." , : These discordant sounds had not been quite unheeded, - even by the fot.d mother. More than once she had put down her fetter and said, "Don't Georgy. don't snap that whip; go, "Charles don't you r. hear your father is waiting for you ;" but until they were gnite rea dy, the youngster did niot move.' Now, when-they "were. really off, . t- V'Silence, like a plaster cam - To" heal the vonnds of sound." No wonder that Mr. Elliott sighed -when he thought of the days when he was'young, when children loved none the less, but revered.aud honored their parents more ; at least such was his ex perience. ;,. ".;.';. v '". "Well, - Margaret, if you really wish ;to know the difference between boys can tell yu." ' 4iI was one of a large family, six of ; whom were boys, and a happier broth erhood seldom lived beneath the paren tal roof. . 'My father, I remember him well, as he looked to me in my childhood. at d for the many years that followed, was tall and stately, with a quiet dignity of manner that tMsmmanded respect while it never overa wed us. ;:f And ray mother, blessings ort her gentle eye and tender heart,' was- regarded by her husband - and every one of her children, as some thing more angelic than human. "VVhen she entered the room, no mat ter whether at study or at play, we arose to wait on her, to place a chair for her, anticipating her wishes, while the angry tone, or the loud voice of- mirth were hushed io her presence - We vied with too proud and happy to receive her com mendation in return. 7. P "But. with all the love and affection which she freely poured out from her full heart, there was never; any of the fam iliarity of the present day,, which so soon breeds contempt. ' ' "Oh, but uncle." said the Iadv, "you were uncommon "children, or perhaps were kept in dread of your father's dis- - pleasure." - , , r "No." replied Mr. Elliott,- "we were 1 .' i i : i i i .. . . mucn use oiuer cnuaren, ana iear was not the governing; principle. We did not,. to be sure treat my father like hail fellow, well met,' iior speak of him as, governor,- nor the 'old - man." We did not need to be asked to. vacate his favor ite chair when he entered the room, nor did we interrupt him while speaking. 1 "At table we were not accustomed to monopolize the conversation,, making to say a" few words. We were taught that silence was a yirrare, aud in the - presence of age we Were rather to listen than to instruct, - l - : "Yet there was no irksome bondage with us, .whatever there might; have teeu in other families ; we - were en cou raged to speak freely our thoug hts uuu wisnes in tne proper lime ana - place. " " r ; - . ; "We were early accustomed to obey ; my father believing that if children did not obey, their .earthly parents, neither wouia xney meir Father- in heaven that he' was to us a tvne of nnr sniritu al r.irent; and that by receiving, with cIk JUka submission, the precepts he taught u?, we were prepared to listen to, the corr.mandmenfs of God. .' "JN , uticie ; no. 1 teel rouuemnea ; but it is not ray fault altogether. My. husbandsays he wishes his boys to be companions he likes to see tnem nave some spirit and a mind oi tneir own.r That is thy" spirit of the times you will see it everywhere; our country is ..... : u new, our institutions new; wuai is om is despised age is no longer reverenced. It is the future alone mat is aeemea worthy of regard, and children are con sulted while the experience ef years is passed by unheeded. - e 1 he want ot revence seems to one oi the sirfsf of ihe dav: ebili'reo arSTa,ught no longer to say Sir, and Madam; guch cour tesies do not agree with the spirit pf our free institutions .Men and women in their pr me, in tbe full use of the faculties which God has given them, are pronounced in iheir dotage 1 he hurned onward progress of youth finds no time to lend an arm to guide the feeble step, to listen to the voice of experience, or to cheer the declining years of age. ?A few days since, I was on my way hither, from a distant city, nod look my seat in the rail-car.'; Presently a moiher and a son entered the seat before me. Their tress, so far as was indicated, showed hem to belong to the higher walks of life, but the m iruwrs of the son w ere anything rather trmn well-bred. I He was rcgalinff himself w th nuts, ami from time to time threw the empty shells psisi his mother's face through ihe window beyond ,her. notwithstanding h-r remon strances Having exhausted this kiint of Himisement. he began to whistle An hour ir so later, when the cars stopped for a inoment, he t jrned to his mother and said : M;ome, mother, yon have hd the best seat iong eno'trh it's tny turn now." let my surprise nd iiwlign-ttion. she mmilirt!ely complied with his wishes, with a smie. that seemed 'm ''say it was delightful to rratify his wishes. F oolish mother '. I thought you will live to rue SJch weak ness ! . It was but yesterday I heard a mother say of her son, a boy of twelve years, that he hud such excellent judgment, she al ways consulted, him before taking any im portant step, and if she acted contrary to his advice, she was sure to regret it. , Literally, ihei child is futher to the man. My own white hairs are no security to tne, that I shall be unmolested. As I pass through ihe streets, the sons of gentlemen, urchins not m tiieir teens, bid me get out of their way, or I shall have a snow-bnll as i he penalty ; and really exeeuie tbr threat. lint why multiply instances : you see enough of this to verify my words, and you know I am no enemy to children Let me urge you to exert your influence to secure the respect, as well as the love of your boys, and you will find it better for them, and greatly to your happiness. An engagement waits for me, and I must say adieu. L. M. E. HEALTH PRECAUTION'S. A Virginian, writing troin this city to the National Intelligencer, says : : "I have lived all my life in one of the worst billious fever climates in lower Vir ginia, and for the last twenty years have not had that disease, when in my immedi ate neighborhood scarcely a person escap ed: and I attribute this to the fact that during the months of August and Septem ber I almost invariably, night and morning. had a fire in my office where I slept. ; "Heat, it is well known, rarities and ex p mds the air. If you have .oticed theac counts from Norfolk you have seen that as soon as the weather becomes colder the disease increases, because the air is con densed, and of course we inhale more of the noxious malaria. In the alleys, base ii it . mems, cellars ami cioseu Tooths the air is much cooler than the air in the streets or above the tops of the houses, and conse quently contains more unhealthy and de leterious particles in the same volume or quantity of air." The writer then proceeds to make the following suggestions to the citizens of Norfolk and Poithmoutb: "Night and morninsr, at the heads and in the middle of the alleys and narrow con fined streets, large fires should be kindled and kept burning for some hours; also in the cellars (if there , are not fireplaces in them stoves should be put up) and base ments oi every house, warehouses .and storehouse, as well as dwelling houses. Icrge; fires should be kindled night and morning. - After the fires are kindled let every window of every house and every closet or confined place be opened and a free circulation of air admitted, , when the heated air or atmosphere, being rarified will ascend,: and, with the gent!e bree2e,v be wafted off, and with it the seeds of disease and death. I venture the . assertion that tt ere is not one third of the disease among those servants who sleepand remain in tl.i kitchens where the i cookings is done and fires are constantly kept that there is among th tee who sleep where fires are never kin dled during the summer months. Let no boa t or vessel of any kind be permitted to enter tbe docks or slips, (ex cept at the lower point of the city, where the ficle sweeps rapidly by, and where there is no deposit e of mud, filth, and de cayed vegetation;) for whenever. the still water of the slips is agitated, it being shoal and mixed with all kinds of filth, it sends forth its poison to be inhaled by whoever shall come in contact with it; but if left on disturbed until the frosts" cornel there will be nothing to fear from it. , Further, let not the streets or docks be touched or at tempted to be cleaned until the cold weath shall come." - ' DKflUDL" 7ll?S TO' REM'.
