A BE OTIFPL EXAMPLE OP E RL1f PIE IT Mc-sibrs. Kditors . W hue atten- diue-a Convention ot Colporteurs of the American Track Society at Charleston, 5 S. C, in February last, I had the pleas ure of listening, to many narratives, vhich were of great interest and value. - -Among them was one by a Colporteur from North Carolina,1. By a part of his narrativp, I was so much affected m Common with all around roe, that I re nuested a copv of it, that 1 might make : it known for the good of many, and es pecially the young. J -l)tmuk the week of th - Auniversa- .V in May last, I rommtmicajed -Ax at a,meetuvg, wnere several requests weie immediately made for a copy, or for its publication. 1 have received so many reqxiests sitice, that I canuot doubt that its insertion iu your parwr and in others, will be gratifying to a largft number in different parts of the land. Yours, fec, i S-.M. AVORCHESTER. Salem August 20, 1855 Charleston, S. C, Feb. 20, 1855. Rev. Dear Sir : My next visit was to the family of , Randolph county, North Carolina. .The morning was Tamy. Mr. ,the husband and ta- lie ther, was a common drunkard had wasted his property, and in a drin king frolic had burned Ins wife's JJible. - VV e were met at the door by his kind " wife, who invited us in, and set for us the only chair in the apartment. We were- scarcely seated, when a child, in a weak tone of voice asked the mother for a sup of water, of the reception of which it reached a pale and slender arm, showing th effect of long continu ed disease. - We asked the mother if the child was kick, and were told that it had been -confined a long time. "-Will it disturb the little .one, if we talk to- it V "o, sir, she likes very much to converse.: when she is free from (pain." Thus en--conraged, we took our chair, (which 'was quite frail.) and '. sat down beside the bed on which the child lay. J .'Well, sissy, are you sick V "Yes sir. I've been sick a long time; but - mother thinks my sore foot is better now." "And does your foot hint you bad V "Sometimes it does." "And -can you sit up in bed some V "No, sir, only when mother holds me." j Te child had a fine rye, and was evidently very weak. Under the pillow ' was a small Testament that looked as if it had been used a great deal. The back was all gone. Drawing this from under the pillow, (we said,) "and is this your; took, sissy?" Yes sir." "And can you read T " Yes, sir." W hat does your Ixiok read about?'' "It reads a bout Jesus Christ, sir-" "Ah! And who is Jesus Christ V ''He is the son of God, sir." "Well, where is he V "He .is in heaven, sir.". - "And what does your book say about Jesus Christ ?" "It say9 he came into the world to save sin ners ?" . "And who are sinners Tr "W e are all sinners, sir." "Indeed ! And lo you think you are a sinner ?" "Yes sir." - '..v: ; ;' . ' "Well, but sissey; if you are a sinner, -and Jesus Oust came to save sinners, what good does it do you to read yonr book? "Why sir, (the countenance of . the child speaking volumes,) why, sir, ,uhen my foots hurts me so bad, I can't sleep, and the light is all gone out, and the rest are all asleep away, in the black and dark niht, audi get so tired, I think about God, and how kind it was when God sent his Son to save sinners"; and then I think about Jesus Christ, that he come to, this world to lake little 1 children into his arms and blessed them! Wasn't it kind, sir ? And theu I think I can see them bad men take -Jesus - Christ and nail him up on the cross ; and for all it is so dark, 1 think I see. a man take a sharp iron and job it into his side. And then 1 can see the blood run down. It seems, sir, like as if it dropt down on my heart ; a-id then I feel so. glad, I forget that my foot hurts me, and I go to sleep, and get Tested good, and in the morning, when the light shines through the big crack and I get wakened, I think I was dreaming.- Rut then I get my Testament, and read,,, and it reads just "like I thought I s 'er; and then I know that I was awake, and that I love God, - and I do think that G id : loves me. Don't you think he does ?n How could I doubt? just here the Doctor came in, and closed our conver , , sation; but. while memory lasts, weei peel to have a vivid recollection of the .house, the mother, her dress, hrr ma n ner, the broken chair, the bed, the child, the piece of Testament, the big crack, the angelic look, the sweet smile, the - faint voice, the clasped and' slender hands ! 1 now ? see " them all ! "Let -.me die the death -of the righteous, and let my last end be like his ? ? - i f . The mother was a pious woman. She had no Bible. Bin a kind neigh . bor,an old lady, had loaned theTesta ment to light the path to heaven. Yours, &c., J. N. A. : SAD CASUALTY";'Vl Mrs. Evans, pf Baltimore, after wash- ing an infant ten months old in a tub of . water, laid it on the floor while she left i the room. . Meantime a larger child put the infant back in the tub, and attemp ted to resume the washing . of it; but un: "fortunately the poor baby's - head was kept under water so- long that -when the mother returned she found it dead. . An Hibernian was reproved by an of ficer for daring to whistlff in the ranks while going on duty.- Just as the officer spoke one of Russia's balls came whist ling over the ravine. Pat cocks his eye up to it a :d quitetly said. "There goes a boy on duty, and by j a hers, hear how he whistles!" RECKLESS DRIVING I On Wednesday last, a lad of seven years bid, named Moses Sweetsen, was run over and seriously injured at Lynn, Mhss., by a carriage driven by lad.es, who drove on without stopping to inquire whartfatnage they bad done by their reckless driving. A MONSTER CUCUMBER! Inhere is now-growing, says the Lowell (Mass ) Journal, urf4tMfUili Pin dar, in this city, a cucuaaber measuring 48 inches in length, and over 12 inches in cir cumference at the largest part! ' THE CASE ALTERED. Louis iNapoleon kissed Q.uen Victoria when she landed in France. There is a great virtue in a kiss from an Emperor. When Louis Napoleon was a special con stable in London, if he had presumed to kiss the Queen he would have had his br ins knocked out with a blow from a ' billy by some of his constabulary broth ers. A WONDERFUL WOMAN. A female school teacher in her adver tisement stated that she was ' complete mistress of her own tongue.' 'If th.it'sthe case,' said a caustic old bachelor, ' she can't ask loo much for her services.' AN APPROPRIATE CONNECTION. A dwelling house in South Bo3ion, Mass , is now being remodelled, by putting stores in the basement story When finished, the easterly store is to be used as an apotheca ry store. The house . overhead i3 to be oc cupied by a physician. The other store is to be occupied as a co ffin warehouse, and the house over it has been leased by an un dertaker. BLOODY- TRAGEDY IX NEBRASKA. Several persons,' some said to be mem bers of the Nebraska Legislature, recently attempted to oust a squatter named Davis, who barricaded his log house. A battle then ensued, and fire-arms were freely used. A man from Iowa, named Goss, was kill ed, another named Purple, had his arm broken, and two others were wounded. The wife nd children of Davis, itis repor ted, were killed. MEDICATED GUm-l'KKi'llA COLLOBLlfl. A.F.vv and Vatuuble Ueimdy -fur dies-in VViumls.
