About feieven o'clock on Tuesday night, John Thomas, a very light mulatto man, em ployed in the stables of Mr. J. Concklin, at the rear of the Butler House, Eighth bnd Chesnut streets, was found lying hear one of the stalls weltering in his blood, which had flowed from injuries of the most frightful character upon his head and face. He was removed to the Pennsylvaniau Hospital, where he remained til! about half past four o'clock in the afternoon, when death termina ted his sufferings. His left jaw was bro ken, and his skull fractured to an aw ful extent. The unfoitunate man had, by habits of economy and industry, sa ved a sum of money amounting to $42 25, and this sum he had converted into gold and carried Upon his person. His trunk was broken opeu a year since and $90 of bis hard earnings car ried off ; and this loss caused him to be ntore careful. The money consisted of a twenty-dollar gold piece, some quarter eagles and gold dollar?, and the balance consisted of half and quarter dollars. This he carri d in a coarse muslin bag, tied up in a han ikerchief, and the cor ner of the latter secured to the button hole of his pantaloons pocket. The previous afternoon he had been seen wtth4his money, for which he appear ed to have a miserly affection, and it is certain that the desire for its possession led to the murderous assault upon him, as his pocketss were found to have been rifled-. He was engaged in his usual avocations until halt past ten o'clock on Tuesday night, and in half an hour was found as has been stated. The first im pression was that he had been kicked by a horse but a more minute- exam ination of the wounds showed that a bludgeon of some kind had been used. He was entirely speechless and helpless when found, and remained in that con di'.iou up to the moment of his death. An old swingle-tree, which had previ ouslv been in the coach-house, was found concealed , the straw : it had marks of blood upon it, and is sup posed to have been the weapon used. Six arrests were made, among the men employed about the stables, but, af ter an examination before Mayor Con rad, they were discharged, there being no evidence to warrant their detention. The Coroner will commence the in vestigation this morning at nine o'clock, at the Pennsylvania Hospital. ,. Thus far the efforts of the police have failed to discover any trace of the mur derer and it seems probable that this will add another to the many murders that have of late occurred in this city, i he perpetrators of which' have not been brought to justice. ledger . SUPPOSED MURDER Salem, N J., Sept. 1,4 Chas. H. Brown, of Philadelphia, was found in Salem creek yesterday, with his throat cut and three marks of violence on his person. It was thought that he had been murdered and thrown overboard from the steamboat 31 iantonomi while on an excursion on Tuesday last. No trace has been discovered of the mui dercrs. The body has been sent to Philadelphia. SECOND DESPATCH. Philadelphia, September 15. A liout thirty workmen in the navy yard at this port have been arrested as wit nesses of the murder of the man Brown t Salem, N. J. A DOMESTIC DRAMA. "Henry, dost thou love me, dearest?" From Hebraska Surveying Party attacked "' toy Indiana. ;-" Chicago, Sept. 15. Dates from Ne ' braska to the 8th inst, have been receiv ed. Col. Monnie's party of government surveyers had been attacked on the Platte river by the Pawnees and disper sed. Col. Monnies and five others had arrived at Nebraska city. The rest of the party were missing and a party of volunteers had gone in pursuit of them. SHOOTING AFFRAY. " ? A shooting affray took place in : Sa vannah, Monday week, bet ween Thom as Wilson, county constable, and Chas. Trippe, a city policeman, in consequence of the seduction of Trippe's daughter by Wilson. "Both were wounded, as were three of the bystander. Trippe's injuries, were' of a dangerous character. A CASE OF CRUEL DESERTION AND DEATH ' Petersbceo, Sept. 17. The body of Mrs. Wm. Gal, was found at the residence of her husband, in Prince George county, on Friday last, under somewhat singular circumstances. Gill's residence is in ibe upper end of the county, near Oak Grove church, and the neighbors thereabouts fear ing foul play had been committed, deemed ii advisable to hold an inquest, which whs accordingly done, Frederick A. Raines, Esq , a justice of the peace, acting as cor oner. ' ; A gentleman informs us it was proved in evidence that on Wednesday evening last, a couple of young fem;ile3 residing in ihe neighborhood, wert to the residence of Gill, to get him and his wife to go and stay with a corpse. , Mrs Gill, declined going, expecting momentarily to be confined, and Gill refused most peremptorily. Thursday morning one of the women again repaired to Gili's residence and found Mrs. G. very low, a new born child on the bed dead, and Gill absent. Witness left, but returned du ring the evening of Thursday, and discov ered that Mrs: Gfll was dead ; and laying by the side of her , child. A little boy about three years old, son of Gill was nlso in the bouse, ant supposed lo be dying of starvation. The luile fellow was immedi ately removed, and nourishment adminis tered. Friday morning the "body uf Airs. Gill was found by witness on the floor, having been removed from the bed. News of her death was now noised nbout among the neighbors, nl upon several of them repairing to the house about 11 o'clock, a. in., the body of. Mrs. Gill was found in a perfectly nude condition, and stretched across the front door. The female witness staled, that on Thursday morning, upon inquiring of Mrs. Gill, as to how some stains of blood which were seen upon the bed came there, she received for rply from Airs. G. that it was where her husband dragged her to the floor the night previous. Having heard the evidence the jury re turned a verdrct of "death from neglect." A somewhat remarkable fact connected with this strange affair is, that Gill has not been seen or heard from since Wednesday evening, when he was requested to stry witli a corpse. -That somebody removed the dsd body of Mrs. Gill from the bed to the floor during Thursday night is clearly evident, as she was seen dead on the bed Thursday evening ; and that the body was divested of its . clothing during Friday morning, and removed from the floor to the front door, is also manifestly established. We understand no marks of violence, whatever, were found upon, the body of deceased ; but as no one was present when she died, and us the body was twice re moved after death and divested ot all clo thing, proves plainly that the house was visited by some one ; and, moreover, as Gill has not been seen since Wednesday even ing, we think an effort should be made to have him arrested, and he be made to state all he knows about the matter. A common regard for humanity would seem to dictate some attention to any hu man being in as distressed a situation as it is proved this poor woman was ; but for one who sustained to her the delicate and important relation of husband ; one who was the father of her child, and who had assumed an obligation to love, cherish and protect her, to so cruelly neglect and leave her to die solitary and alone, appears bru tal in the extreme, and shows a depth of meanness, of. which we can scarcely be lieve human nature capable. We think justice demands that the matter should be more thoroughly sifted. Express. KILLED BY A RAILROAD TRAIN. Wilmington, Sept. 15. Last even ing the accommodation train on the Baltimore Railroad ran over Mrs. Up dyke, near Newport, Delaware, killing her instantly. The unfortunate woman was walking on the track, and being very deaf, did not hear the train. She leaves a husband and family. No blame is attached to those having, charge of the train. MAIL ROBBER ARRESTED. Deputy Marshal Couch, of Ohio, on Saturday last, at Lafayette, ind., arres ted Edward Reynolds, a bowsman on a canal boat, on a charge of aiding in the robbery of the Post Office, at Ciicleville, Ohio. Jerome Gephart, who had been a clerk in, the Circleville office, was ar rested some time last week. It appears that in October last, Gephart abstracted from the office a money packet contain ing one thousand dollar which he im i . i . i I. , meaiateiy passea over 10 rteynoias, wno invested it in the canal boat on joint ac count. They are now both confined in the Cincinnati jail, awaiting their trial in October next. ' ' ; ' NEW AND FRESH GROCERIES.
